Chapter 1

"Ms. Wynn, are you sure you want to buy an uninhabited island? It's in the middle of nowhere. There's no running water, no electricity, no cell service. Once you go out there, you'll basically be completely cut off from the world."

"I know," Evelyn Wynn replied softly, her gaze dropping to the medical report in her hand—the one confirming her cancer. A strange calm loosened her shoulders.

"Don't worry. I won't be living there for long. How soon can we finalize the paperwork?" she asked.

"Give me a moment. I'll check."

Papers rustled faintly through the phone's speaker as Evelyn's thoughts drifted.

No one would have believed she was diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer a month ago. The cancer had probably started seven years earlier, when she was juggling sales calls by day and taking care of Daniel Hayes after his car accident at night.

Back then, Daniel had been right in the middle of his career breakthrough. To help him establish himself in Riverton, she drank with every client until she was throwing up in the restroom. She slept less than three hours a night before dragging herself back to work. She worked all day, then rushed home to take care of Daniel.

Daniel had been so moved he could hardly put it into words. The day he was discharged, they went straight to the courthouse and got married.

To prove how much he loved her, he set his social media profile photo to a picture of her. Every day after work, he brought home lilies—her favorite flowers. Whenever he came back from a business trip, his suitcase barely had room for his clothes because it was stuffed with gifts for her.

Later, when their son, Noah Hayes, was born, their relationship seemed to grow even stronger.

Until the day her long-lost younger sister, Zoe Wynn, was suddenly found and brought back into the family.

Little by little, Evelyn realized the man she loved and the son she was so proud of had started to lean toward Zoe.

The funniest part was that on the very day Evelyn was diagnosed with late-stage cancer, Zoe got ahead of her and whipped out an oncology report first. The look in Zoe's eyes when she held it out had been openly taunting.

At that moment, Evelyn realized Zoe was faking it.

Evelyn had rushed to expose the lie, but all she received in return was a vicious slap across the face from Daniel. It was so hard that it split her lip.

"Evelyn, you've gone too far! Zoe actually has cancer! How could you pretend to have it? Do you really need to fight with her over something like this?"

Noah shouted, "Mom, you're horrible! I hate you!"

Her parents looked at her with disgust.

"We let it slide every time you fought with Zoe for attention, but this crosses the line. How could you say something like that?"

"You're always fighting with Zoe for everything. How is she the one who got cancer and not you?"

In that instant, Evelyn went cold from head to toe. It was as if she'd been pushed into a frozen cavern, with no hope of ever reaching the surface again.

Nothing hurt more than being stabbed by the people she loved most. Especially when the first ones to hurl accusations at her were her husband and the son she had carried for nine long months.

Something in Evelyn broke. She didn't have much time left anyway. If all they cared about was Zoe, then she would give them what they wanted.

"Ms. Wynn."

The voice on the phone pulled her back.

"I've checked everything. The transfer can be completed in 15 days."

"Alright. Pick me up in 15 days."

The words had barely left her mouth when a cold voice cut across the entryway. "Pick you up for what? Where are you going?"

Evelyn looked up and saw Daniel standing in the doorway in a perfectly pressed suit, his brows drawn tight. Behind him stood Zoe and Noah, their hands clasped together like the picture-perfect mother and son.

So, they'd gone to the hospital with Zoe today too.

Evelyn's gaze dropped. She was about to say it was nothing when Daniel strode forward and yanked the papers from her hand.

"Late-stage stomach cancer?" he read off the report.

Panic flickered through Evelyn. She didn't want him ruining her plans. She opened her mouth to explain, but Daniel's eyes were already filled with scorn. "Where did you buy this? It looks convincing, I'll give you that."

Evelyn's entire body went rigid.

Noah stuck his tongue out. "Mom's lying again. She's using cancer to make everyone feel sorry for her!"

"Noah, you can't talk about your mother like that," Zoe said in a soft, chiding tone.

Noah snorted. "But it's true. Mom's jealous of you, so she's pretending she's sick too. Grandma was right. Staying home as a housewife has fried her brain!"

The words hit like an open flame to Evelyn's heart.

Seven years ago, she destroyed her health by entertaining clients and caring for Daniel in the hospital. After Noah was born, the pain in her back and stomach never fully went away. Some days, she could hardly move.

At the time, both Daniel and Noah had been devastated for her, begging her to give up her job and stay home so she could focus on her health and the family.

Now, all of that had turned into a cheap insult, like she was rotting away on the couch until it made her stupid.

Evelyn drew a long breath.

It was a good thing she no longer expected anything from the two of them. Her heart still hurt, but it no longer felt like she couldn't breathe.

In the blur between life and death, Daniel seemed to find himself on an island. Just as he was still trying to figure out where he was, a woman in a long dress stepped out of a house. She carried a flower basket on her arm, her smile bright and radiant. Even while doing something dull like pulling weeds, she was humming under her breath.Daniel could only hide in the shadows, watching Evelyn so bright and carefree. For the first time, he felt like a rat crawling through a gutter. The truth hit so hard, it crushed him.Even without him, Evelyn wasn't alone at all. On the contrary, her days were full and peaceful. He was the only one still trapped in this love, sinking in endless pain, struggle, and despair. In a daze, he saw a man walk over to Evelyn and strike up a conversation.Daniel's eyes went red as he rushed forward. "She's my wife! She's the woman I love! You have no right to even look at her like that!"But his body passed straight through the man. He was nothing but a

Daniel went to the hospital first. Noah's surgery had gone smoothly, but he still hadn't woken up."Noah might simply not want to wake up for now," the nurse said.Daniel clasped Noah's hand and set the burnt toy bear by his pillow. "Noah, this is my fault."He had led Noah astray. He had ruined both Noah and Evelyn."I'll bring your mom to you. If she's willing to see you," he whispered. Then, he stood up and headed for the police station. Right before he stepped inside, his palms were slick with sweat. He didn't know if Evelyn would be willing to return to him. He didn't know if she would even agree to see him.At this point, he had no right to ask for anything at all.If Evelyn chose to leave, he wouldn't try to stop her. Letting go was the only thing he could do for her. He forced himself to breathe and built up what little courage he had. Finally, he walked into the lobby, but a nervous tightness still seized his chest. It felt just like that winter long ago, when the f

Owen and Tiana were stunned into silence by the question.Zoe's gaze darted away, and she suddenly clutched her chest. "It hurts... Dad, Mom, hurry and take me to the hospital! My stomach is killing me again!""You wanna go to the hospital so they can expose your fake cancer?" Daniel asked.Tiana shot to her feet. "Daniel, you can say anything you want, but you can't joke about this! We all know Zoe has stomach cancer!"Zoe's voice shook as she choked up. "Daniel, are you losing it? Are you hearing things now? Why would I ever fake having cancer?"Daniel took out his phone and played the recording of Zoe's earlier call for everyone to hear. In it, she clearly admitted she was faking the cancer and had planned Evelyn's kidnapping.Owen and Tiana were completely shaken. Tiana almost passed out on the spot."What have we done..." she cried. She slapped her thigh and sobbed until she was almost out of breath, like she wanted to smash her head into the wall and end it all.The pain

Daniel rushed to the hospital the moment he got the call, only to be stopped outside the operating room."Mr. Hayes, please calm down!"Daniel's eyes were red and wet. A wave of guilt crashed through him. He had failed Evelyn again. He had failed to protect their child."How's Noah?" he asked. The nurse looked at the man in front of her. He was helpless, desperate, and trembling uncontrollably. He had once cut a sharp, polished figure. Now, he was skin and bone, with dark circles under his eyes and a lifeless pallor that erased any trace of the confident man he used to be.She sighed. "Noah's condition is very serious. He suffered a severe head injury. There's a chance he could end up in a vegetative state."Daniel's eyes went bloodshot. "Where were the aides? Where were the nurses? Why wasn't anyone watching him?""Mr. Hayes, Noah did have a family member with him at the time.""Who?""His aunt, Zoe Wynn."The nurse took a stuffed bear from the cart. "Also, this was thrown o

Daniel didn't give up searching for Evelyn. He dropped to his knees in front of a camera and recorded himself begging for her forgiveness. That video spread across the world. Some people online admired him for being so devoted. Some said he was just a scumbag putting on an act. Others cursed him outright. He didn't care about any of it. All he cared about was whether Evelyn would see it and whether she would forgive him.At night, whenever Daniel thought about how little time she had left, he would picture her curled up somewhere, writhing in pain from late-stage stomach cancer. The thought jolted him awake. And once he sat up in bed, he could no longer fall back asleep.Day by day, as each page was torn off the calendar, that nameless fear spread slowly through his chest until it felt like something was crushing him, leaving him short of breath.Zoe still came by every now and then. She kept insisting she had not known about Evelyn's cancer, but to Daniel, that no longer mattere

Zoe's face went completely pale. "Daniel, I don't understand what you're talking about."Tiana's eyes widened. "Cancer? Daniel, has Evelyn tricked you? She's perfectly healthy! How could she have cancer? Don't just believe anything because she's gone missing!""Exactly!" Owen said anxiously. "That ungrateful brat is just jealous of Zoe! How could they both get cancer? That's ridiculous!"Indeed, it was ridiculous. If he could choose, Daniel would have wanted nothing more than for it to be a lie. But it wasn't."This is Evelyn's medical report from the hospital." Daniel took out the freshly printed report.Owen and Tiana saw the words "late-stage stomach cancer" and went white as a sheet.Tiana's legs gave out, and she dropped to the floor. "No... That's impossible! How is that possible?"Zoe saw the proof in black and white and couldn't hide anymore. Her eyes instantly turned red. "How could this happen? I didn't know... I really didn't know...""You didn't know?" Daniel sudden
