Sabrina's POV

Axel Callahan didn't come straight in, instead making another call.

I lay in bed, pretending to be asleep, listening to his voice that was so gentle it didn't even sound like him.

"Raven, don't be mad. My marriage to her is just for show. The only bride I'll be waiting for at the end of the aisle is you."

A sweet, cloying voice came from the other end of the line. The night was quiet, so every vicious word reached my ears clearly.

"But I get furious just thinking about seeing her in a wedding dress, Axel. You have to act faster. I don't want her to be happy for too long."

Axel chuckled dotingly. "Okay."

Raven Winslow sighed again. "Axel, why don't you put her and that bitch in the same car? Otherwise, if her mother dies… knowing Sabrina, she'll make a huge fuss."

Axel went still for a second, and my heart leaped into my throat.

"Axel, why aren't you saying anything? You're not… hesitant to do so, are you? Don't tell me you've actually developed real feelings for her?"

"Absolutely not!" Axel roared.

He instinctively turned toward the bedroom, and only relaxed when he saw I hadn't stirred.

"How could I develop real feelings for the daughter of a murderer? Every time I see that face of hers—so similar to her mother's—and every time I have to kiss her, I feel disgusted!

"It's just that letting her die would be far too easy. Don't you think it'd be more interesting to let her watch her mother die, then as she's shattered by despair, she sees you walk out in a wedding dress, your arm linked with mine?"

Raven was apparently very pleased with this reply, and she laughed until she was gasping for air.

"As expected of Mr. Callahan. You really know how to torment people. If she goes insane afterward, we can just keep her locked up. If she doesn't obey us, we'll hit her. And if she does, we can let her out to serve as our maid. She can hand us condoms when we're making love and be a literal punching bag for our children. That way, your mom in heaven will be happy too."

Axel chuckled indulgently. "Yes, yes. Anything you say."

After hanging up, he leaned against the window, lighting a cigarette, smoking it slowly, thinking about who knew what.

Only after a long while did he stub out the cigarette and return to the bedroom.

"Bri, what are you doing awake?"

"I'm thirsty," I answered with a bitter smile.

After a brief silence, he asked, "When… did you wake up?"

"Just now," I said, lifting my eyes to look at him. "What's wrong?"

Axel shook his head, smiled, and said, "Nothing."

Then he went to pour me a glass of warm water. "Drink this, then go back to sleep. You still need to try on wedding dresses tomorrow."

I took the glass and tilted my head back. The warm water slid down my throat, yet my whole body felt bone-chillingly cold.

As he took the glass from me, he put his hand behind my head and pressed a kiss on my lips. His kiss still carried the faint, familiar taste of tobacco.

After a while, he finally released me, looking into my eyes meaningfully.

"I can't wait for our wedding day. I'm dying to marry you and make you my wife."

If this were before, I would have thought those were the most beautiful and romantic words in the world. But now, I couldn't think of anything more horrifying.

Axel, the man I had loved for seven years, couldn't wait to see my mother, Elaine Pembrook, die on the way to the wedding, and he couldn't wait to see me spiral into despair over her death.

But I truly didn't understand—what had Mom and I done wrong?

Back then, Mom actually hadn't wanted to marry Axel's father, Dorian Callahan, because she was worried I'd be mistreated. It was Dorian who had forced the marriage.

And what I understood even less was—if Axel hated me so much, why had he been so good to me? Why, on the very first day we met, did he grab my hand and call me "Sabrina" so affectionately?

Why, when others bullied me, did he cut off their fingers?

And why, in places where no one could see, did he kiss my lips, grab my waist, and… make love to me?

I exhaled slowly, lifting my head to look at the man in front of me.

"I'm really looking forward to the day too."

Thankfully, the night was dark, so he couldn't see my red-rimmed eyes or my trembling body.

Once Axel fell fast asleep, I immediately slipped out to the porch to call Mom.

"Bri, it's the middle of the night. Is something wrong?"

"Mom, pack your things. We're leaving for Baylandia in five days. A company there hired me, and I've decided to move there.

"Don't tell anyone about this, especially not Axel, okay?"

Mom was startled by my urgent tone, and she stammered out an "Okay."

After booking the tickets, I finally felt my heart settle back into my chest.

The next day, on the way to the bridal shop, Axel casually brought up Mom.

"Bri, maybe you should tell Elaine about the wedding. We might not be able to make the ceremony public, but she's still your mom, and she should be there to witness this special day of yours."

I clutched my skirt tightly. "Then… what about Dad?"

Axel froze for a second, an almost imperceptible shadow crossing his face.

"Let's leave Dad out of it for now. He's old-fashioned. We can tell him when you're pregnant, and everything's set in stone."

I stared silently out the window and nodded. I knew that once Axel made a decision, there was no changing his mind.

The only thing I could do was run.

But… when I was pregnant? I couldn't help but rub my hand across my belly, and the pain in my heart deepened.

The truth was, I had already found out I was pregnant a week ago. I was already three months along.

When I saw Axel again, his face lit up with surprise and joy. He was so excited that he tried to get out of bed, but the movement tore at his wounds and sent him crumpling to his knees in pain.I didn't move to help him."Don't get excited. I'm not here to see you. I'm here to make a deal."Axel froze. I leaned against the wall, my expression blank. "If you want my forgiveness, you'll do one thing for me.""What is it? Just name it. There's nothing in this world I can't do. Even if you want my life—"I sneered. "Who would want your life?"A flash of hurt crossed his face."I need your father to finalize the divorce with my mom.""This…" He hesitated. My expression didn't waver as I continued, "That terrifying man keeps trying to contact my mom. I don't want her living in his shadow again."Axel was silent for a long time before he finally spoke, his voice low. "If I do this, will you… will you come back to me?""No."I turned and walked out of the hospital. From now on, eve

When I slowly came to, the first thing I heard in my groggy state was Axel and Mom talking.I immediately sat up. "Mom, he didn't do anything to you, did he?"Mom hurried to calm me. "No, no, nothing happened. Quick, lie back down. The doctor said you can't take any more stress."Only then did I let out a breath of relief, while also shooting Axel a disgusted glance."Bri, why did you insist on having the abortion that day? You could've just waited until we came back to Baylandia. Doing it that way is really going to take a toll on your health," Mom said with a sigh.I smiled and looked at Axel."It was because I needed to give my dear big brother a surprise. After all, he gave me such a huge one."With every word I spoke, Axel's face grew a shade paler."Bri…""Don't say my name. Get out! If you don't leave right now, I'll rip out this IV and throw you out myself!"As I spoke, I started pulling at the needle. Axel immediately panicked and stumbled back several steps."Okay,

Sabrina's POVIt was in the wee hours of the morning when the plane touched down in Baylandia. The cold hit immediately.Behind me, Mom unwound her scarf and wrapped it around my neck. I hadn't shed a single tear these past few days—not when Axel betrayed me, and not when I was lying on the operating table. But at that moment, I couldn't hold back my tears anymore."Mom…"I threw myself into her arms, sobbing uncontrollably."Why… Why wouldn't he spare us, even at the end… Why did he have to lie to me? Didn't he say I was the love of his life? Why?"Mom said nothing. She just kept gently stroking my hair, the same way she used to when I was a kid.I didn't know how long I had been crying before I finally released her."Alright, Bri…" she whispered. "He's not worth it. He might as well be dead to us. This is the last time you'll ever cry for him, okay?"I nodded.I turned and looked at the vast tarmac. It felt as if I'd gone back in time, back to when I had followed Mom to At

Third-person POVAxel had only just arrived home when Raven's call came in. He glanced at the phone and decided to answer it."What is it?" he asked in a frosty tone."Axel, when are you coming to pick me up? I can't wait any longer!""I'm on my way.""Really? Which means that bitch is finally dead now, right? What about Sabrina? How did she react?"Raven was practically quivering with excitement. She'd have teleported right to the scene of the accident then and there if she could."She's devastated. She cried so hard she fainted," Axel said softly.Raven let out a petulant scoff. "That's a pity. I really wanted her to see us holding hands, standing at the altar."Axel paused, his gaze darkening. "It doesn't matter. The most important thing right now is our wedding. I've already sent a car to pick you and your mother up."Raven giggled. "You're so thoughtful, Axel. I was just about to ask too. In that case, Mom and I will wait for you at home."After ending the call, every t

Third-person POV"Where are they? Where's the patient?"Axel stood outside the empty hospital room, shouting at the passing nurse whom he had grabbed by the arm."The patient was discharged earlier. Sir, please calm down!""Discharged?" He released the nurse abruptly. He stared at the chat window on his phone, his brow furrowing even deeper. Sabrina still hadn't replied to his message. She had never acted like this before. Could it… Could it be that she had already found out? No, that was impossible. He quickly dismissed the thought. If Sabrina had found out that he'd planned to kill Elaine, there was no way she would've still been talking and laughing with him just a few days ago.Axel ran his hand over the sheets that still retained a trace of warmth, irritation boiling inside him. He had waited so long for this day, and in the end, the two of them had suddenly vanished.Suddenly, his phone rang. It was Raven. She sounded thrilled. "Axel, have you picked up our bride yet?"

Sabrina's POVBy the time Axel came home, it was already the following evening. Mom and I happened to be having dinner. Seeing him, Mom waved cheerfully. "Axel, come, have dinner. I cooked your favorite lobster tails."Axel smiled and nodded. "Thank you, Elaine."I stayed silent at the table while he chatted away animatedly. "Elaine, there's something I want to tell you. I've decided to hold a wedding ceremony with Bri two days from now…"He glanced at me. "Consider it my way of thanking her for being by my side these past seven years."Mom froze, looking at me. "Two days later? But didn't Bri say—""Mom!" I cut her off immediately. "Don't ask. Let's just eat. The food's getting cold."Confused, Mom frowned but chose not to press further. The table fell into a dead silence.Suddenly, Mom pointed at Axel's neck and teased, "At that rate, I have a feeling I'll be able to hold my grandchild soon, Axel."He touched the red marks on his neck. "I'll definitely do my best so you ca
