Chapter 2

Author: Through Meteorites
I put the wallet back into the box and asked faintly, "Why did you give him such an expensive gift?"

Vivian grabbed her phone, and there was an awkward expression on her face. "John just got a divorce, and he's in a bad mood. I just wanted to give him something to cheer him up.

"You never cared about quality, anyway. Presents are all about sincerity. If you insist on comparing the price, then it'd be stupid."

So, when she gave me a gift, all that mattered was her sincerity, but when she gave something to John, she had to give him something worthy of his tastes.

I asked softly, "So, the moment he asks for something, he gets 3,000,000 dollars and a watch worth 990,000 dollars. After I had an entire day's worth of follow-up checks, I said that I was hurting, and it became me asking you for money?"

Vivian's expression sank. "That's my own money. I don't need to tell you how I decide to use it. You already got your gift. Why are you vying for what's John's?"

It was only at that moment that I understood.

What truly hurt me was never the large difference in value between our gifts.

Instead, it was the fact that I still had to prove that I was not eyeing her money, even after we had been together for six years.

John had cast her aside for six years, but all he needed to do was to come back, and she would remember how much she had loved him in the past.

Vivian took the follow-up report and placed it casually on the shoe cabinet. She did not even bother reading it. "Enough already. I spoke a little too harshly just now. Tell me ahead of time if you're going for your follow-up. I'll try to free up time to go with you."

There was a hint of resignation in her voice, as if she was trying to appease an unreasonable person.

Whenever we argued in the past, the moment she conceded slightly, I would back down and swallow all my sadness.

For once, I simply nodded silently. "Okay."

Vivian thought that she had managed to make me calm down, and she relaxed.

At that moment, my phone screen lit up. [Your renal artery embolization surgery has been scheduled.]

I turned off the screen so that she would not see it.

Vivian would not know.

There was not going to be a next time between us any longer.

The next morning, Vivian acted as if nothing had happened and simply sent me a message that she had reserved a restaurant.

[Come to Cloudtop Restaurant at 12 p.m.. It might be late, but I'll celebrate your birthday.]

I had reserved that restaurant three times.

The first was during our couple's anniversary. Vivian had balked when the bill cost 5,000 dollars per person, and she said that there was no need for us to spend such money for a meal.

The second time was during our wedding anniversary. She had a social gathering at the last minute and asked me to cancel the reservation.

Last month, I reserved it for the third time, and it was for my birthday.

She forgot to come and made me sit in the restaurant until it was closing time. In the end, I did not order anything.

She had finally asked me to go there.

Even though I knew that our marriage was over, I still felt a sting in my heart.

It seemed like a wish fulfilled far too late could no longer make me happy.

That noon, I arrived at the restaurant on time, but the waiter did not bring me to a private dining room for two. Instead, he opened the door to the dining hall.

Sitting inside were all of the company's executives and project partners.

Some writing was displayed on the screen.

[Welcome back, John. Congratulations on the launch of your new project.]

John wore a light gray suit and sat beside Vivian.

On his wrist was that 990,000-dollar, limited-edition watch.

In front of Vivian was a long, thin gift box.

It was the empty presentation box for a limited-edition pen that I had mentioned I liked, but she had never bought for me because she thought it was expensive.

That pen was clipped to John's breast pocket.

When he saw me, John immediately stood up. "Zach, you're finally here. Vivian said that we're celebrating your birthday and also throwing a welcoming party for me today."

There was a three-layer cake at the center of the table, but written on it was: Welcome back, John.

My name was nowhere in sight, and there was nothing birthday-related about it.

I turned to Vivian. "This is how you're making up for my birthday?"

An awkward look appeared on Vivian's face. "No one had any other time to gather together, so we could only celebrate everything on the same day. It's just a birthday. You have one every year.

"But John came back after six years. This welcoming party is more important to him."

Suddenly, I remembered what she had said yesterday.

Gifts were about sincerity, and there was no need to compare prices.

Apparently, birthdays were the same.

As long as it was me, she could skip giving me gifts, her love, and any form of ceremony.

Vivian did not leave Aurope immediately. On the day of my birthday, she booked a restaurant. There was that limited-edition pen on the table, and only my name was written on the cake. She waited from evening until it was closing time, but I never showed up. The next day, the waiter sent a card on my behalf to her. [I'd already made time for our celebrations three times. That was enough.]She then sent me an expensive watch. On the day the courier sent it to my company, I refused to take it. Vivian stood outside my company and waited for me for two hours. When I clocked off work, she did not come up to me. Instead, through the crowd, she asked, "What do you want?"I stopped walking. Six years ago, I had wanted her to be safe. After I got injured, I had wanted her to come with me for a follow-up. After we separated, I just wanted to live my own life. "I want you to stop coming here."Vivian stood in the cold wind, and her expression turned dejected bit by bit.

Once she settled every matter in the company, Vivian called for a press conference. Before the cameras, she admitted that I was the one who came up with the core proposal for the clean energy project. My name returned to all of the documents. The profit generated from the project was also re-calculated based on the standards that were supposed to be given to the person-in-charge. I accepted the money, but I sent the extra 30,000,000 dollars back. Then, Vivian signed the divorce agreement. When the document was sent to Aurope, there was a note attached to it. [I owe you too much. I can only return these to you first.]After I read the note, I put the note together with the return form for the 99-dollar wallet. Three months after Vivian signed the divorce agreement, Vivian came to Aurope. I had just finished giving a project presentation. She stood at the last row of the meeting room, and she had become much thinner than before. After the meeting, she did not make

Problems soon popped up in the new energy project within the country. John made a blunder. He thought that the review process I left behind was too slow, and he bypassed the legal department to sign a contract with a new supplier. After the new supplier received the 80,000,000-dollar deposit, their person-in-charge disappeared. The project was forced to a halt. The board of directors had to hold an emergency meeting that night. When Vivian reached the company, John was still ranting. "How would I know that they would run? The legal department checked the contract. You can't just blame me for everything!"The legal department's supervisor slammed the documents on the table. "We never saw this contract before. The risk report the project group submitted is also falsified."John turned pale and instinctively turned to Vivian. "Vivian, you have to believe me. One of my subordinates must have tampered with things."Vivian did not sleep for three days in order to cover the losse

The sun had risen by the time Vivian returned to the house. After a sleepless night, she sat down at the dining table. In her hands was the 99-dollar wallet. There were creases on the cheap leather. That morning, Luke Zidane, our mutual friend, went to Vivian. Luke was our university friend and one of Marsh Corporation's earliest investors. When he saw the medical report on the table, he stayed silent for a long time before he slammed a folder in front of Vivian. "How could you say that no one will look at Zach's proposals after he stops being your husband?"The first investment you got was because of him."Vivian snapped her head up. "What do you mean?"With a furious expression, Luke shoved another folder he had kept for years to her. Six years ago, after John took all her savings away, her company's cash flow collapsed. No investor was willing to believe in a young woman with a huge amount of debt. Back then, I went to Luke with a completed proposal. I used the

I learned later that the first reaction Vivian had after seeing the report was not regret. It was disbelief. She scanned through the report multiple times, as if she was looking for traces of forgery. But the hospital's seal, the surgery date, and my signature were all clear and real. The day of the surgery was the day she agreed to go with me for the follow-up, but she ended up breaking her promise because she chose to go with John for the contract-signing ceremony. Vivian picked up her phone and called me, but all she heard was the mechanical voice telling her that the call did not go through. She finally realized that I had blocked all of her ways to contact me. She hurried into the bedroom and opened the wardrobe. Most of my clothes were gone. The medicine for my kidneys was missing from the bedside table, and even the toothbrush and towel had vanished from the bathroom. Only her slippers were left at the foyer. Vivian stood frozen, and her breathing started to

I sat alone in the hospital's corridor at 8:30 a.m. the next morning. Vivian never showed up. At 7 a.m., she sent a message. [John drank too much yesterday. I need to send him back first. I'll be there soon.]At 8:40 a.m., she said that she was caught in traffic. Then, at 8:55 a.m., the nurse started calling for me. I stared at the unmoving elevator and decided to call Vivian one last time. When the call went through, I heard John speaking. "Vivian, the contract-signing ceremony is about to start. Everyone is waiting for you."Vivian whispered, "What is it?""The nurse called me. Didn't you promise to keep me company?"She was silent for two seconds before she became impatient. "It's just a regular follow-up. Can't you go through it by yourself? This is the first time John is taking over a project. I can't be absent today."I stared at the shut doors of the operating theater and said, "Fine. Keep him company."Vivian sighed in relief. "Send me the receipt after your fol
