Chapter 3

Author: City Below
It was no wonder Ariana was capable of something so twisted. She had dug up her own mother's grave just to frame me. As it turned out, her mother's death had been nothing more than a lie.

I sent a message to Micah. "Ariana's mother isn't dead. The truth is in the email I just sent you."

Whether he opened it or not was no longer my concern. The flight was booked for three days later. Elijah handled the arrangements personally.

When Micah finally returned, he walked in to see me packing. Half of my clothes were already thrown out, and the rest had been shipped to Wimborne ahead of time.

He looked puzzled. "Why are you packing your things?"

"I'm moving," I said flatly, not bothering to look up.

He paused for a moment, didn't pick up on anything unusual, and just kept talking like everything was normal.

"Preston Group's headquarters are based in Wimborne. We'll be settling there after the wedding, so it makes sense for you to start packing early."

Then, his expression hardened as he looked straight at me. "About Ariana's mother… You'll need to apologize. Don't make things harder for me. Just do it on the wedding day, alright?"

Without waiting for a response, he tossed his phone aside and went to search for his ID. Today was the day he and Ariana got their marriage certificate signed.

He didn't come home that night. When I finally turned my phone on, Ariana's message popped up instantly. The photo showed her and Micah in matching loungewear, curled up together in bed.

I closed my eyes, but the sting in my chest still caught me off guard. Swallowing the emotion, I turned off my phone without replying.

Later into the night, my phone buzzed on the nightstand every hour. Each time it vibrated, it was another taunting video from Ariana of her and Micah, flaunting their intimacy like it was some kind of victory.

By morning, Elijah finally messaged me. "Ms. Preston, the flowers have bloomed. It's time to come home."

Attached was a photo of two marriage certificates, resting beside a blooming crimson peony. I hadn't expected him to keep the flower I gave him all those years ago. And somehow, seeing it stirred something unfamiliar in my chest.

I sent one word back. "Okay."

Then, I put down the phone and started organizing my work files and laptop. At some point, Micah had returned.

He moved around the room casually, throwing a few everyday essentials into a bag. "I'm going to stay with Ariana for a few days. She's swamped planning the wedding and can't handle it all on her own.

"Don't forget, the wedding's in two days. Be there on time."

After saying that, Micah launched into a long explanation. It was the usual—he was just helping with Ariana's wedding, nothing inappropriate, and I shouldn't make a scene about it.

I kept my gaze low and replied quietly, "Yeah, I won't show up."

Whatever feelings I had left for him had completely vanished after what happened last night.

Micah watched the calm on my face, and a wave of unease crept over him, tightening in his chest. For a moment, he hesitated. But the image of Ariana's clingy sweetness flashed through his mind, and his grip on the phone loosened.

He thought, "Skylar's always loved me. Nothing's going to change that."

With that thought, he let out a breath, relieved. He didn't push further and walked out of the room without looking back.

I watched his figure fade into the distance, then pulled out my phone and made a call.

That evening, a helicopter landed quietly in the plaza. A man stepped forward to greet me. "Ms. Preston, the helicopter you scheduled is ready. We'll have you safely in Wimborne within the next thirty minutes."

I nodded and handed him a sealed envelope. "Deliver this to the wedding venue tomorrow. It's my gift to the bride and groom."

I let out a soft, cold laugh. "You're really here to cash in on that promise?"Micah nodded solemnly. "Yes. I want you to give me a chance. Even if you won't divorce Elijah, I still want to be with you—for the rest of my life."I slowly ran my fingers over the heart-shaped locket he handed me, my smile deepening. I said calmly, "Then, maybe you should find Ariana instead. After all… It's her name engraved inside."Micah blinked, stunned, and quickly snatched the locket back to check. His fingers trembled slightly as he flipped it open.Perhaps he really couldn't remember. He hadn't even engraved my name—not even when he said he loved me most.I never told him this, but on the day he announced his engagement to Ariana, I went back alone to the boardwalk at Avalmere Bay. I retraced every step we once walked together. That was when I found the locket at the lost and found counter. It was worn and tarnished with age, but it was unmistakably ours.In that moment, all I felt was how p

People around us started putting the pieces together. Someone even recognized Micah as the man who made a scene at our press conference a while back."That's the jerk who dumped the heiress of Preston Group for his first love, right? I heard he even planned to divorce her and marry Ms. Preston again.""Has he even looked in the mirror? Who gave him the confidence?""He wants it all—money, love, status—but brings nothing to the table. What a gold-digging loser."The crowd hadn't expected the twist to hit that hard or that fast.Once they realized they had been played and attacked the wrong person, they muttered a few curses under their breath and quickly dispersed. I let out a heavy sigh of relief and buried my face against Elijah's neck. "Darling, thank god you were here."Elijah wrapped me tightly in his arms and let out a smug hum. "It wasn't easy getting you to marry me. Now that you're mine, there's no way I'm letting some clown sniff around. I stay on guard, always."I la

Micah grabbed my wrist, eyes red with desperation. "Skylar, you know I love you. Ariana and I—what happened between us was a mistake. If it wasn't for her mother's dying wish, I never would've married her."I pulled my hand away and met his eyes without a word. I was calm, but my silence said everything. He broke down, shouting through his tears. "It was an act of devotion! Can you really stand by and watch a single mother die in regret? You rich people are all the same—so heartless. You have no idea what people like us go through!"As he shouted, a figure shoved through the crowd and lunged toward me. A flash of silver gleamed. Elijah shoved me out of the way without hesitation.A sickening sound followed as the blade plunged into his back, and blood quickly soaked through his shirt. I screamed for a doctor. The woman was quickly tackled and restrained by the security guards. She was yelling hysterically, "Give me back my daughter! Give her back to me!"The woman was Athena Reed

Three days later, it was the post-wedding celebration and the Preston Group's anniversary gala. After some discussion, both the Preston family and the Middleton family decided to host the two events together. However, no one expected things to spiral out of control. Micah showed up at the press conference with a group of reporters and publicly accused Elijah of seducing Skylar and stealing his fiancee. In an instant, the reporters swarmed Elijah with mics and cameras. The scene turned into chaos. Before Elijah could rise to speak, I stepped forward to face the reporters myself. "The alliance between the Prestons and Middletons is entirely legitimate. He wanted to marry me, and I wanted to marry him. "We filed the paperwork like any other couple. So where exactly does the idea of Elijah 'stealing me' even come from?"I glanced across the room. "I suggest everyone choose their words carefully. The Preston Group's legal department won't take slander lightly."The reporters hesitate

A phone was suddenly connected to the massive screen. The moment it powered on, explicit images and vulgar messages flooded the screen, forcing their way into everyone's view. The room fell into a stunned silence. The screen displayed Micah and Ariana's private chat history from the entire past year. Finally, a video began to play—so raw and intimate that several guests turned away, their faces flushed with discomfort.Micah's face went ghostly pale. He stood frozen, too stunned to react. His mind raced. "How the hell did Skylar get all of this? She knew? She knew everything?"Then, he saw the sender's name and froze. It was Ariana.Ever since Ariana had returned to their lives a year ago, she had been secretly sending chat screenshots to Skylar. Every message was laced with subtle hints, trying to push her to walk away quietly. Now, it all made sense. Skylar hadn't kissed him in a year, and her attitude had grown cold and distant. As the moans from the video filled the air, Mica

The next day, I sent Micah a message on time for their wedding. "Happy wedding day."Back at the venue, Micah stood near the entrance, his eyes scanning the crowd. He turned to his assistant, Nathan Patel."Where is Skylar? She promised she would be here today to apologize to Mrs. Thompson publicly."Nathan scrolled through the news on his phone, his brows tightly furrowed. "She's not coming. She's busy… with her own wedding." Upon hearing that, Micah froze in the middle of the banquet hall, stunned. The ballroom was decorated exactly to Ariana's taste—champagne roses in soft blush tones spilled from every table, casting a dreamy glow across the venue. Guests clinked glasses and exchanged pleasantries under the warm lighting. Everything looked perfect. However, Micah gripped his phone tightly, his eyes locked on the headline. "Preston Group CEO Ties the Knot—'True Love' Jewelry Collection Officially Launches."Sweat broke out in his palms as he hurried to dial the number he
