Chapter 2

Author: City Below
There was a time when I cared deeply about Micah. As long as he asked, I would have given him anything. I would have done anything for him.

But now, he was the one who woke me up.

Looking back, ever since Ariana returned from abroad, everything he did revolved around her. He had forgotten that I was supposed to be the one standing beside him for the rest of his life.

My response clearly upset him. He snapped, "What's that supposed to mean? You're not willing? You'd better get this straight—Ariana is my closest friend. You'd better keep her happy, or I won't marry you!"

He slammed the door behind him and stormed out. Frustrated and emotionally drained, I went downstairs and headed to the park for a run.

I had barely finished one lap when my phone rang. It was Elijah.

Elijah's ever-serious face flashed in my mind. I hesitated for a moment, then picked up the call. "You're on my ship now, which means you're mine. Try running, and I'll personally drag you back."

That was Elijah's opening line—bold, unapologetic, and straight to the point.

I stayed quiet, unsure what to say. Then, he added, "Send me your ID. Let's get the marriage certificate. I don't trust you not to back out."

Something about Elijah wasn't right.

In my mind, I had already imagined a thousand ways he might use this marriage to torment me. And yet, all I could say was, "See you at the wedding, Mr. Middleton."

The second I said it, I heard a voice behind me. "You're inviting Elijah to our wedding? I won't allow it."

Micah was suddenly standing right there, staring at me like I had just betrayed him.

"Skylar, didn't I make it clear? I told you to stay away from Elijah. He's not simply being friendly—he has feelings for you. If you insist on inviting him to our wedding, don't blame me if I walk away for good."

I hadn't even said a word before he threw down that threat.

Micah had always disliked Elijah with an almost irrational hostility. When we first started dating, he even got jealous over how often Elijah and I argued over text on WhatsApp. Eventually, I stopped talking to Elijah altogether.

But now he was accusing Elijah of having feelings for me?

I was just about to press him for answers when Ariana suddenly leaned against Micah's shoulder, tilting her head like she was about to faint.

"Micah… That hurt. You're holding too tight…" It was only then that I noticed they were holding hands, fingers tightly interlocked, strolling through the park like a couple.

Micah cleared his throat awkwardly but made no move to let go of her hand. Ariana looked at him with a softness that made my stomach churn.

Then, she turned to me, pretending to sound apologetic. "Skylar, I'm sorry. Micah and I were just rehearsing the wedding ceremony. Please don't take it the wrong way.

"I'm not going to expose how you hired someone to attack me or how you destroyed my mother's grave. But please… don't hurt Micah. True love doesn't need to be tested over and over."

I didn't want to watch her fake act for a second more. I turned to leave and said coldly, "Well, if you're so eager, maybe I should actually send someone to beat you tonight. And while I'm at it, dig up your mother's grave too."

A loud smack resounded in the air. Micah slapped me hard across the face.

"Skylar, how could you be so cruel?" Micah's jaw was tight, his eyes darkening as his chest heaved with anger.

Cruel? He believed her lies without hesitation, while five years at his side couldn't even earn me a shred of his trust.

A wave of fury surged inside me. I was ready to demand an explanation, but Ariana suddenly stepped between us and leaned toward him protectively.

"Please, Skylar. As soon as the wedding's over, I'll give Micah back to you. Just let this go. Please don't hurt the people around me. Don't hurt Micah anymore."

She lowered her gaze, clasped her hands, and made it seem as if she was about to kneel.

Before her knees could hit the ground, Micah wrapped an arm around her waist to stop her. He glared at me, his tone sharp and cutting.

"Skylar, don't pull that entitled heiress act on me. I can't stand women who use their status to push others around. If you still want to marry me, stop making a scene."

Then, as if delivering a final judgment, he warned me not to show up in front of them again until the wedding.

I didn't expect that just the next day, Micah would be the one reaching out to me.

He didn't even say hello—he just launched straight into yelling. "Skylar, did you seriously dig up Mrs. Thompson's grave? I can't believe you'd do something like that!"

Confused and stunned, I immediately called my assistant to look into it. The report I got back left me stunned. Ariana's mother wasn't even dead.

I let out a soft, cold laugh. "You're really here to cash in on that promise?"Micah nodded solemnly. "Yes. I want you to give me a chance. Even if you won't divorce Elijah, I still want to be with you—for the rest of my life."I slowly ran my fingers over the heart-shaped locket he handed me, my smile deepening. I said calmly, "Then, maybe you should find Ariana instead. After all… It's her name engraved inside."Micah blinked, stunned, and quickly snatched the locket back to check. His fingers trembled slightly as he flipped it open.Perhaps he really couldn't remember. He hadn't even engraved my name—not even when he said he loved me most.I never told him this, but on the day he announced his engagement to Ariana, I went back alone to the boardwalk at Avalmere Bay. I retraced every step we once walked together. That was when I found the locket at the lost and found counter. It was worn and tarnished with age, but it was unmistakably ours.In that moment, all I felt was how p

People around us started putting the pieces together. Someone even recognized Micah as the man who made a scene at our press conference a while back."That's the jerk who dumped the heiress of Preston Group for his first love, right? I heard he even planned to divorce her and marry Ms. Preston again.""Has he even looked in the mirror? Who gave him the confidence?""He wants it all—money, love, status—but brings nothing to the table. What a gold-digging loser."The crowd hadn't expected the twist to hit that hard or that fast.Once they realized they had been played and attacked the wrong person, they muttered a few curses under their breath and quickly dispersed. I let out a heavy sigh of relief and buried my face against Elijah's neck. "Darling, thank god you were here."Elijah wrapped me tightly in his arms and let out a smug hum. "It wasn't easy getting you to marry me. Now that you're mine, there's no way I'm letting some clown sniff around. I stay on guard, always."I la

Micah grabbed my wrist, eyes red with desperation. "Skylar, you know I love you. Ariana and I—what happened between us was a mistake. If it wasn't for her mother's dying wish, I never would've married her."I pulled my hand away and met his eyes without a word. I was calm, but my silence said everything. He broke down, shouting through his tears. "It was an act of devotion! Can you really stand by and watch a single mother die in regret? You rich people are all the same—so heartless. You have no idea what people like us go through!"As he shouted, a figure shoved through the crowd and lunged toward me. A flash of silver gleamed. Elijah shoved me out of the way without hesitation.A sickening sound followed as the blade plunged into his back, and blood quickly soaked through his shirt. I screamed for a doctor. The woman was quickly tackled and restrained by the security guards. She was yelling hysterically, "Give me back my daughter! Give her back to me!"The woman was Athena Reed

Three days later, it was the post-wedding celebration and the Preston Group's anniversary gala. After some discussion, both the Preston family and the Middleton family decided to host the two events together. However, no one expected things to spiral out of control. Micah showed up at the press conference with a group of reporters and publicly accused Elijah of seducing Skylar and stealing his fiancee. In an instant, the reporters swarmed Elijah with mics and cameras. The scene turned into chaos. Before Elijah could rise to speak, I stepped forward to face the reporters myself. "The alliance between the Prestons and Middletons is entirely legitimate. He wanted to marry me, and I wanted to marry him. "We filed the paperwork like any other couple. So where exactly does the idea of Elijah 'stealing me' even come from?"I glanced across the room. "I suggest everyone choose their words carefully. The Preston Group's legal department won't take slander lightly."The reporters hesitate

A phone was suddenly connected to the massive screen. The moment it powered on, explicit images and vulgar messages flooded the screen, forcing their way into everyone's view. The room fell into a stunned silence. The screen displayed Micah and Ariana's private chat history from the entire past year. Finally, a video began to play—so raw and intimate that several guests turned away, their faces flushed with discomfort.Micah's face went ghostly pale. He stood frozen, too stunned to react. His mind raced. "How the hell did Skylar get all of this? She knew? She knew everything?"Then, he saw the sender's name and froze. It was Ariana.Ever since Ariana had returned to their lives a year ago, she had been secretly sending chat screenshots to Skylar. Every message was laced with subtle hints, trying to push her to walk away quietly. Now, it all made sense. Skylar hadn't kissed him in a year, and her attitude had grown cold and distant. As the moans from the video filled the air, Mica

The next day, I sent Micah a message on time for their wedding. "Happy wedding day."Back at the venue, Micah stood near the entrance, his eyes scanning the crowd. He turned to his assistant, Nathan Patel."Where is Skylar? She promised she would be here today to apologize to Mrs. Thompson publicly."Nathan scrolled through the news on his phone, his brows tightly furrowed. "She's not coming. She's busy… with her own wedding." Upon hearing that, Micah froze in the middle of the banquet hall, stunned. The ballroom was decorated exactly to Ariana's taste—champagne roses in soft blush tones spilled from every table, casting a dreamy glow across the venue. Guests clinked glasses and exchanged pleasantries under the warm lighting. Everything looked perfect. However, Micah gripped his phone tightly, his eyes locked on the headline. "Preston Group CEO Ties the Knot—'True Love' Jewelry Collection Officially Launches."Sweat broke out in his palms as he hurried to dial the number he
