Our Salvation

After my younger sister, Harper Summit, and I settled the marriage alliance, I ran into Murray Rex again at a friend’s gathering.

When his men saw me, they smiled mockingly and said, “Capo, looks like your shadow’s back.

“Laurel, you’re engaged to our capo. You don’t have to track his every move. This is just a casual hangout, you know?”

When Murray noticed me, he clearly looked disdainful and impatient.

“Laurel, are you really that eager to marry me? The Summit family announced your and your sister’s engagements without even getting my brother’s or my consent.

“You sisters would really do anything to lock down an engagement with us, wouldn’t you?”

Seeing how full of himself he was, I could not help but find it laughable. Just as I was about to retort, Harper stepped forward and immediately pulled me behind her.

She snapped at Murray, “A lowlife like you still thinks he’s worthy of marrying my sister? We aren’t marrying either of you. Why would we need your consent?”

When she said that, everyone burst into laughter.

“Whoa, someone’s angry! Craig, hurry and comfort your fiancee! Who knows what kind of scene these two will cause next!”

At his men’s urging, Craig walked over and looked at Harper in annoyance.

“Harper, how many times do I have to tell you? This kind of act won’t get my attention. It’s pathetic!”

Murray raised an eyebrow in disdain.

“Laurel, grow up! Don’t drag your sister into playing hard to get.

“It’s already in the news that you Summit sisters are marrying into the Rex family.

“You’ve followed Craig and me around since we were kids. Everyone in New Yark knows you two have been clinging to us for years. The entire syndicate knows that the Summit family’s daughters are our fiancees. Who else would marry you?”

He stepped closer to me and whispered, “We’ll overlook the fact that you went public with the engagement without asking us. We’ll give you the title and even throw you a real wedding. But you and Harper have to stay out of our lives after we’re married. Let’s be clear, you aren’t the ones we truly want to marry.”

I stared at Murray, shocked by his serious and earnest face.

Why was this unfolding differently from last time?

In the past, both Murray and Craig were terrified that Harper and I would discover their love for their adopted sister, Lucy Rex.

This time, Murray was the first to tell me the truth.

Could it be that Murray and Craig had also returned to the past?

Before I could make sense of it, Lucy joined the gathering.

When she saw Murray leaning close to speak with me, she instantly burst into tears.

“Murray, I heard you and Craig are getting married! That’s… wonderful. I… I won’t feel lonely, I promise. I’m a grown-up now. Congratulations… to you both and your fiancees.”

After she said that, she ran out sobbing.

“Look what you’ve done!”

Murray shot me a glare. Without a moment’s hesitation, he chased after her.

Craig also shoved Harper aside and hurriedly followed after them.
