Chapter 3

Penulis: Watermelon
We quickly put the unpleasant encounter with Murray and Craig behind us once Harper and I started shopping.

The twins we were engaged to were from the Luciano family.

The elder brother, Leopold Luciano, was calm and dependable, while the younger, Dylan Luciano, was gentle and kind.

Although they would not be returning from overseas until the next day, our frequent online chats had sparked Leopold’s interest in me. I, too, was very pleased with someone as handsome and outstanding as him.

Harper felt the same way about Dylan, who clearly liked her.

We both carefully picked out gifts for Leopold and Dylan. Both of us looked forward to our first meeting the next day.

The following morning, Harper and I were fully dressed and were holding our gifts, just about to head out, when the doorbell rang.

The moment the housekeeper opened the door, Murray and Craig barged in.

They were stunned when they saw that Harper and I were all dressed up.

“How did you two know about the important banquet tonight?”

Before we could answer, the observant Murray noticed my exquisitely wrapped gift.

His initial confusion instantly turned into smug satisfaction.

“You actually bought me a gift? Let me see it.”

Afraid he might snatch it, I immediately hid the gift behind my back.

“It’s not for you.”

Craig, standing nearby, also spotted Harper’s neatly wrapped present and said, “Laurel, if your gift isn’t for my brother, who else could it possibly be for?”

He then turned to Harper.

“And you? What did you get for me?”

This was beyond ridiculous.

Seeing us silent and clutching the gifts tightly behind our backs, Murray and Craig sneered in contempt. They sprawled casually on the couch, acting as if the house belonged to them.

“Alright, forget about the gifts. We get that you two are being difficult. We know you’re into us and can’t live without us.

“As long as you stop giving Lulu a hard time and quit throwing fits about her, we won’t treat you badly either. Life will be easier for both of you from now on.”

‘Treat us badly?’ I thought and smiled in disdain.

My family was New Yark’s most prominent arms dealer, deeply entwined with multiple mafia syndicates.

If Harper and I had not clung stubbornly to them since childhood, our parents would not have spared these two mere capos a second glance.

Murray failed to notice my cold, disdainful smile. He looked at me condescendingly and in displeasure.

“Where’s that diamond bracelet I gave you? Put it on!

“The Don’s twin sons are back in the country. There’s a family dinner tonight at the top estate. Wear it, and don’t make me look bad.”

Craig looked at Harper and added, “My brother’s right. This dinner is a formal event. Only the most trusted capos are invited. The fact that I’m willing to take you along means I’m acknowledging your status. Consider it a sign of respect.”

Murray was worried we might cause trouble, so he gave us detailed instructions.

“The Don’s family values tradition and respect above all. Mind your manners. Don’t bring up anything inappropriate, and that includes Lulu.

“Speaking of Lulu, she couldn’t attend due to… formalities. She was so upset that she stayed home crying. She spent all of yesterday crying because of you two. After this is over, you’ll be coming back with us to apologize to her.

“And remember, until the wedding is official, Craig and I can still call this off at any time!”

After Murray was done, he and Craig walked to the limousine that was waiting at the entrance.

Harper and I exchanged a glance and shrugged helplessly.

It did not matter. After tonight, they would finally learn exactly who we were engaged to.

When we entered the estate’s banquet hall, the Luciano family had not yet arrived. Only their name cards occupied the empty seats.

Harper and I deliberately avoided the seats near Murray and Craig. Instead, we took our places beside the seats reserved for Leopold and Dylan.

Murray and Craig, who had just returned from greeting the other bosses, saw us seated and frowned. They stood up and walked over to us.

“You two are getting more willful by the day! We already assigned your seats. Stop causing a scene!

“Those seats are meant for the Don’s eldest son and his fiancee! Don’t embarrass me! Get up now! Our seats are at the other end of the table!

“Laurel! Did you forget everything I said to you before we left?”

Craig grabbed Harper’s hand and forcibly pulled her up.

“You have no manners at all! If you offend the Don’s family, you’ll be dragging us down with you!

“Those seats are reserved for their fiancees, not for you two!”

At that moment, two tall figures appeared at the banquet hall entrance.

Leopold and Dylan walked in unhurriedly. They were dressed in elegant suits and looked as handsome and refined as two princes.

Murray and Craig were rushed to the hospital. They survived their severe injuries but were left permanently disabled.Harper and I covered their medical expenses. We saw it as a way to close the chapter on our past with them. When Leopold found out, he did not say much. He simply held me gently in his arms.A month had passed since the shooting. He stayed by my side at all times, afraid that even the slightest unease might return.Dylan was just as clingy.Harper grew annoyed by his constant attention and could not help but tease him.“I had no idea you’d be so clingy before we got married! I can’t even imagine what you and Leopold would’ve done if you hadn’t married us!”Her words made me pause. She was right. Why had I not noticed in the past how considerate and devoted Leopold was?Leopold and Dylan exchanged a glance. A flicker of sadness flashed in both their eyes.Leopold smiled bitterly. He ruffled my hair and began to tell a story.“Once, at a party, a young boy

After the Rex family kicked all three of them out, they vanished without a trace as homeless wanderers.Leopold was worried they might still upset me. He cleared a big chunk of his schedule and took me on outings, dinners, and little trips, all to lift my spirits.Little did he know that I had long stopped caring about them.On our wedding day, Harper and I put on our most beautiful wedding dresses. We walked down the aisles toward our husbands amid the applause and watchful eyes of our guests. At that moment, Murray and Craig, who had been missing for so long, suddenly barged into the wedding venue.“Laurel, you can’t marry him!”Murray reeked of filth. He tried to push through the guests and charge toward me.Just as the bodyguards intercepted him, Craig took advantage of the chaos to slip past the security. He cried out, “Harper, no! I can’t lose you!”Anthony flew into a rage. He drew a gun from his pocket and aimed it at their heads.“I spared you before out of respect fo

The days that followed were harmonious for all of us. Leopold and I got along perfectly, as did Harper and Dylan.Harper told me that Dylan made her understand what it meant to be truly loved. It was the same thing with me. At times, I even regretted how much of my past I had wasted on someone as undeserving as Murray. In the midst of this happiness, a friend of ours suddenly wanted to meet up.[Harper, Laurel, congrats! Your efforts have finally paid off![Murray and Craig have both publicly professed their love for you on social media. Is the wedding coming up soon?]Harper and I frowned.Marriage was no small matter for mafia heirs. Wedding dates and especially the identities of the spouses were never announced publicly until everything was settled internally.I immediately took out my phone and searched for Murray’s social media profile.Only then did I see that his profile picture and cover photo had both been changed to photos of me.His pinned post read: [Laurel is

Murray still did not get what Anthony was saying. He said excitedly, “Mr. Luciano, are Leopold and Dylan getting married too? That’s perfect! We can have all four weddings together! The whole syndicate can celebrate! Which family are they marrying into?”Anthony frowned.“What are you talking about? Four weddings? My sons are marrying the Summit sisters! What does that have to do with you or your brother?”“What?!”Murray and Craig finally understood. Murray stared at me in shock. He then asked in a trembling voice, “W-what did you say? Who… is marrying who?”Before Anthony could answer, Leopold raised our clasped hands high and looked directly at the stunned Murray.“I’m marrying Laurel.”Dylan put his arm around Harper’s shoulders. “And I’m marrying Harper.”“No way! That’s impossible!”Craig leapt to his feet, utterly shocked by what he heard.“Everyone knows Harper’s in love with me! She’s obsessed with me! How could she agree to marry a punk like you—”Anthony frowned.

Murray frowned when he received the text.[What are you talking about? This is a major event! Don’t cause a scene!]I pretended not to see it and turned my phone face down on the table.Maybe it was petty of me, but I was amused by the sight of the three of them stuck awkwardly in the doorway.Anthony’s expression remained stern, but he eventually waved them in.Murray walked over, still holding Lucy’s hand. The moment he saw Leopold seated beside me, his face stiffened.Of course, he did not dare say anything. He had no choice but to take Lucy along and sit in a corner. That subtle, constant attention lingered—just as my phone began to vibrate beneath my hand.[Laurel, what do you think you’re doing? Just because I brought Lucy along, you’re trying to cling and flirt with Mr. Luciano to get back at me?[It won’t work! Mr. Luciano would never be interested in someone like you![The whole organization knows you’re obsessed with me, Mr. Luciano included! No matter how you try t

For a brief moment, all eyes in the room turned to the Luciano brothers. They primarily resided in Etalia. Leopold managed the mafia syndicate family operations, while Dylan oversaw their legitimate businesses. In just five years, they had developed their organization into the most powerful syndicate.Everyone present removed their hats and bowed respectfully. No one dared to show even the slightest hint of disrespect.Yet, Leopold and Dylan looked past everyone else. Their gaze settled directly on Harper and me.The way Leopold smiled at me felt strangely familiar. Something stirred in my memory.‘Have we met them before?’ I wondered. When they saw Murray and Craig standing beside Harper and me, their gaze darkened.Just as I was about to explain the situation to Leopold, Murray’s phone suddenly rang. He and Craig hurried out, muttering that they needed to pick someone up.Feeling uneasy, I glanced at Leopold, who responded with a faint smile. He then walked to my side.Me
