Chapter 6

Author: Orange
"Bianca, did you put the watch I gave you up for bid?"

I smiled lightly, and lied without hesitation.

"That wasn't my watch. Didn't Candice and her husband get a matching set, too? She wants to switch to a new one, so she asked me to help sell hers."

Lars stood there for a few seconds, suspicion flickering in his eyes. "Really? For a dollar?"

Then, his tone softened.

"Bianca, I know I've neglected you lately." He sat on the edge of the bed and reached out for me. "If you're upset, just tell me. Don't bottle it all up and stress yourself, okay?"

"Alright," I said.

"After my mom passed away last year, you're all I have left." His voice was low. "Trust me. No matter what happens… You've always been the most important person to me."

I leaned against him in his arms, catching a faint whiff of rose scent on his jacket.

"It's late. I want to sleep," I whispered.

"Let me hold you a little longer," he said. "Is something bothering you lately? Just give me a few more days. Once things settle down, we can talk."

Yeah, right.

He had been busy lining up for cakes, planning birthday surprises, filling trunks with pink roses, and making Pearl happy without me noticing. True, he was quite busy indeed.

Lars looked at me, brushing the corner of my eye. "Why are your eyes red? Were you just crying?"

I was about to answer, but his phone rang.

Lars let go and turned away to answer it, frowning as he walked out. At that moment, every bit of tenderness disappeared from his face.

I remained where I was and called his name:

"Lars."

Yet, he didn't even look back.

I got up and walked to the window, watched as he hurried downstairs and drove away, his last words still echoing in my ears:

"You've always been the most important person to me."

I didn't need those words anymore.

With a marker, I drew a line across the calendar. Tomorrow was his birthday. It would also be my last night in Eastwind City.

I had already ordered a birthday cake for him. We had spent so many years together, after all.

I shredded our photos on the wall into pieces and threw them in the bin. From now on, this place had nothing to do with me anymore.

Maybe it was because I had missed my meds for days, but I was awoken by my stomach pains early the next morning.

My thoughts went back to the first year we started the company… Just the two of us, and less than two thousand in the bank. To survive, Lars helped me chase clients, and I pulled all-nighters with him. We split hamburgers, and I was drinking for him at parties.

Later, to secure a round of funding, I drank through three parties in a row and ended up with a gastric perforation. The doctor rebuked him right outside my hospital room. Lars sat by my bed, a six-foot-tall man like him, crying like a boy who got into trouble.

"I'm sorry for not being good enough. Staying with me made you suffer," he said.

"I'll never let you down as long as I'm alive," he promised.

How laughable.

I curled up on the sofa, cold sweat soaking my back. I took out my phone and dialed his number. No answer. I called twice more—still nothing.

At exactly ten, Candice called.

"Bianca, he didn't show up at the office again! The paperwork's piling up, and the financing deal is still waiting on his signature. If he disappears again, the company's done for!" she cried.

Rubbing my aching stomach, I answered with a distracted hum.

"And…" Her voice sped up, "I just heard Royce Farrell, the CEO of Radar Finance, is having his wedding next week in Botolph City. If Lars wants to get the company listed smoothly, he must show up and make an appearance. Otherwise, it's all over!"

I froze.

"Wait," I said, my voice hoarse. "Who?"

"Don't you know? Royce Farrell, the CEO of Radar Finance? If the Farrells give the nod, it's almost a guarantee for our company to get listed!"

"So, you're saying…Roy has liked me for a long time? Is that why he always asks about me in secret?"She smiled weakly. "You silly girl! He has always liked you."Then, I remembered the day Royce calmly said in the car that he had someone he liked. My heart hadn't stopped racing all day. Late at night, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Suddenly, my phone lit up. It was a message from Royce.[Can't sleep?]I sat up and quickly replied, [How did you know?]He answered almost instantly. [It's late, and your phone's activity log shows you've been moving around the house. You're definitely still awake.]My heart beat even faster. [Roy, how did we actually meet?]Our families had always been close, but I was sure we had never really met before. Just as I was about to put down my phone, it rang. My heart skipped a beat, and I hurriedly picked it up.Royce's voice was low as he spoke. "Bianca, don't say a thing."There was only silence, and in that silence was the sound of his

Two days before Bianca's wedding, Candice took leave and flew straight to Botolph City.Lars approved her request, his eyes empty as he stared at her reason for taking the leave. "To attend a friend's wedding out of town."It should have been his and Bianca's wedding. Now, it had become someone else's. Lars leaned on the desk, making his way to the design department. The new design director had only recently started, and Bianca's office was still empty. A faint scent lingered. It was her favorite diffuser fragrance. Her presence still hung in the air."Mr. Carter…" The marketing director tiptoed in. "About that wedding invitation from Radar Finance… The wedding's this Sunday, and, err… Are you…"Lars could barely hold himself together. "Leave it on the desk."The director set down the invitation and left in a hurry. Once the door closed, Lars picked it up.Bianca White.Royce Farrell.Lars suddenly found it hard to breathe. "You're… You're leaving such an expensive place for her?" Pearl questioned Lars, her voice turning harsh. She stood next to the floor-to-ceiling windows in Horatio Bay One, filled with disbelief. "Are you insane? Do you even know what this place is worth—""She's worth it," Lars said as he turned and started to leave.Pearl stumbled after him. "Where are you going?"He didn't even look back. "I've got plans. Go home by yourself."Pearl stood there, watching Lars walk further and further away. She was shaking with rage. Before nine that night, she called Lars many, many times. When he refused to pick it up, she continued to call and frantically send out messages. Pearl knew men like him too well. Leave them alone, and you never know which woman they'll end up with. Finally, at two in the morning, her phone rang. However, it wasn't Lars—it was his closest friend in Eastwind City."Pearl, Lars is drunk, and he keeps shouting he wants to go home. Lars flew back to Riverton overnight, looking completely haggard. The moment the plane landed, he rushed straight to Pearl's home. When Pearl opened the door half-asleep and saw him, she threw herself at him in delight. She thought she had finally won.Yet, she had barely opened her arms when Lars grabbed her by the throat. He shoved her roughly to the sofa, pinning her."Who gave you the right to send those screenshots to Bianca?" he roared.Pearl struggled in terror, clutching desperately at his wrist. However, she couldn't loosen his grip at all. "Have you gone mad, Lars? Are you trying to kill me?!""She misunderstood what was going on between us! Are you satisfied now?" he spat through clenched teeth.Pearl started to lie. "It really wasn't me! Now that I think about it, maybe when Bianca came into your office that time… Maybe she saw them back then…""Shut up!" Lars' grip on her tightened. "She isn't someone you get to smear!"Pearl, nearly out of breath, quickly change

On the way home, Royce handed me a pack of chamomile cookies.I was taken aback by the gesture. The sweet warmth, the subtle floral fragrance… The chamomile cookies had saved me countless times when my stomach was acting up because of the gastric.I accepted them. "Thank you…" "The chamomile scent is strong in this one. Just eat a little. Your stomach isn't in great shape," he said with a calm tone, as if he had always known about my stomach problems.I glanced at him, baffled."I saw the bottles of yoghurt drink in your fridge. Every one of them is low-sugar and targeted toward gastric patients."He had been paying close attention to me, even if he preferred to be quiet about it.I took a bite of the biscuit, feeling my heart stir.Never once did Royce bring up the phone call from Lars. The next day, I was woken up by my mother and quickly dragged away to try on my wedding makeup. My wedding day was approaching, and I had to try on six sets of dresses and six different mak

Lars kicked open the door, nearly losing control as he rushed into the living room. The place was stripped bare, as if Bianca had never lived there at all.Lars slumped onto the sofa—and then, he spotted a trash bin by the dining table. Inside was food and a birthday cake. His hands trembled as he lifted the lid on the cake box. "Wishing you happiness, Lars."The letters were written in white chocolate, neat and beautiful. It was the last birthday meal Bianca had prepared for him. And what had he said to her during their final call?"How many years have you had this gastric problem? Can't you just tough it out? Do you think I'd ask if I wasn't desperate?!""Bianca, are you really going to act up right when Pearl needs me most?"Lars buried his head in his hands and wept, waves of regret crashing over him.Suddenly, the door clicked as it opened.Pearl came in, eyes flickering. "Lars… Did she really leave?""No!" Lars shot to his feet. "She's just upset. I'll get her back."
