Chapter 1

"Mom, please tell Grandpa that I'm willing to go through with the arranged marriage."

My mother, Ellena, was stunned to hear it.

"What did you say? Wait… What about your boyfriend? The one you've been with for six years?"

"We're done," I said with calm finality. "Have Grandpa arrange the marriage."

My mother went quiet for a moment, unsure of what to say.

Then…

"What's the meaning of this, Bianca? I know Grandpa worked hard to find Royce Farrell for you. He's the executive director and CEO of Radar Finance, and one of the world's most powerful heirs. An excellent man, I'm sure, but when it comes to marriage... I hope you're not rushing into things."

"I'm not being impulsive," I insisted, though my tone was frosty. "Please arrange it, Mom."

When I called my younger brother yesterday, he accidentally let the secret slip. Our family had suffered a major loss in a Biscayne real estate deal, and our cash flow was going into the negative.

An arranged marriage was the safest way out.

In the past, I turned my back on my family for Lars Carter. The me from back then would have never agreed to an arranged marriage. What a fool I was!

But now, that fool is dead.

Lars, the love of my life. The CEO of Midas Capital, he controlled a plethora of investment funds, several arms dealings, and crypto asset platforms. He was a major player in Eastwind City's financial world, mysterious and dangerous.

Few knew he was the heir of the Viktors, an old mafia clan from the city of Virgil in Vitalus.

For six years, I fought by his side and watched him rise from nothing. I thought I would be the woman standing with him, ruling this city by his side.

At least, until two months ago.

Out of the blue, Pearl Ross entered our lives. His childhood sweetheart, the darling from his younger days. Right after she arrived, she became his personal secretary.

The moment I saw her, I already knew—nothing could compete with their bond.

After that, Lars was always away on business trips or working overtime. Biscayne City, Zephyr City, Botolph City... Each time, it was just the two of them.

On the financial statements for every trip they took, I noticed that Lars and Pearl only booked one presidential suite. Upon checking the attendance records at our company's Riverton branch, they would be together in a closed meeting room almost every night.

One fateful day, I ran into Pearl in the office hallway. She wore a dazzling smile, so bright that it seared my eyes.

"Hello, Bianca," she said sweetly. "You don't look so good. Did you and Lars have a fight?"

I shot her a cold look and turned to leave.

"Bianca," she called me softly, "you're almost thirty. Don't be so childish. Radar Finance still hasn't agreed to the financing deal, and Lars is under a lot of pressure. If you can't help, at least don't make things worse, okay?"

"Are you telling me what to do, Pearl? I founded Midas Capital with him. If he can keep you, I can make you leave," I snarled.

Pearl froze, and her eyes suddenly started to redden.

"I… I was just trying to give you some friendly advice," she stammered. "If you don't like what I have to say, you don't have to listen. There's no need to say something like that…"

Lars happened to appear at the end of the hallway. His expression was frosty.

"Bianca, Pearl just came from Vitalus. She's not used to the language or culture here. Can't you be a bit more understanding with someone younger?"

Young?

I almost laughed. At most, she was just three months younger than me!

Standing under the harsh lights, I stared right back at him, locking eyes.

"Lars, I'll give you a choice. Either she leaves…or I do."

Yet, he didn't even flinch. "Don't make a fuss about this."

Pearl's eyes instantly filled with tears.

"Bianca, is there a misunderstanding here? Lars and I are just friends who grew up together in Virgil. You're from a privileged family. You grew up wanting nothing. I get that. But I never insisted on staying at Midas Capital. If you don't like me, I can pack up and leave Eastwind City…"

"Pearl…" Lars couldn't hide the tenderness in his eyes.

I laughed, but the sound was hollow and frigid.

Without hesitation, I spun on my heel and walked away from the building—the place our financial dream had started.

Long ago, my father asked me to take over the family business. In my stupidity, I refused.

I loved Lars, so I willingly gave up everything to help him conquer Eastwind City's financial world. How many times did I stay up until three in the morning, drinking and negotiating by his side, gambling away all we had for a scrap of future influence?

In the end, all I got for my trouble was: "Don't make a fuss."

That night, I video called my mom.

She sighed. "When are you coming home?"

"In about half a month."

I looked back at the brightly lit headquarters of Midas Capital.

Lars, I gave you a choice—but you abandoned me.

Now, I've made my choice.

I'll abandon you, too.

"So, you're saying…Roy has liked me for a long time? Is that why he always asks about me in secret?"She smiled weakly. "You silly girl! He has always liked you."Then, I remembered the day Royce calmly said in the car that he had someone he liked. My heart hadn't stopped racing all day. Late at night, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Suddenly, my phone lit up. It was a message from Royce.[Can't sleep?]I sat up and quickly replied, [How did you know?]He answered almost instantly. [It's late, and your phone's activity log shows you've been moving around the house. You're definitely still awake.]My heart beat even faster. [Roy, how did we actually meet?]Our families had always been close, but I was sure we had never really met before. Just as I was about to put down my phone, it rang. My heart skipped a beat, and I hurriedly picked it up.Royce's voice was low as he spoke. "Bianca, don't say a thing."There was only silence, and in that silence was the sound of his

Two days before Bianca's wedding, Candice took leave and flew straight to Botolph City.Lars approved her request, his eyes empty as he stared at her reason for taking the leave. "To attend a friend's wedding out of town."It should have been his and Bianca's wedding. Now, it had become someone else's. Lars leaned on the desk, making his way to the design department. The new design director had only recently started, and Bianca's office was still empty. A faint scent lingered. It was her favorite diffuser fragrance. Her presence still hung in the air."Mr. Carter…" The marketing director tiptoed in. "About that wedding invitation from Radar Finance… The wedding's this Sunday, and, err… Are you…"Lars could barely hold himself together. "Leave it on the desk."The director set down the invitation and left in a hurry. Once the door closed, Lars picked it up.Bianca White.Royce Farrell.Lars suddenly found it hard to breathe. "You're… You're leaving such an expensive place for her?" Pearl questioned Lars, her voice turning harsh. She stood next to the floor-to-ceiling windows in Horatio Bay One, filled with disbelief. "Are you insane? Do you even know what this place is worth—""She's worth it," Lars said as he turned and started to leave.Pearl stumbled after him. "Where are you going?"He didn't even look back. "I've got plans. Go home by yourself."Pearl stood there, watching Lars walk further and further away. She was shaking with rage. Before nine that night, she called Lars many, many times. When he refused to pick it up, she continued to call and frantically send out messages. Pearl knew men like him too well. Leave them alone, and you never know which woman they'll end up with. Finally, at two in the morning, her phone rang. However, it wasn't Lars—it was his closest friend in Eastwind City."Pearl, Lars is drunk, and he keeps shouting he wants to go home. Lars flew back to Riverton overnight, looking completely haggard. The moment the plane landed, he rushed straight to Pearl's home. When Pearl opened the door half-asleep and saw him, she threw herself at him in delight. She thought she had finally won.Yet, she had barely opened her arms when Lars grabbed her by the throat. He shoved her roughly to the sofa, pinning her."Who gave you the right to send those screenshots to Bianca?" he roared.Pearl struggled in terror, clutching desperately at his wrist. However, she couldn't loosen his grip at all. "Have you gone mad, Lars? Are you trying to kill me?!""She misunderstood what was going on between us! Are you satisfied now?" he spat through clenched teeth.Pearl started to lie. "It really wasn't me! Now that I think about it, maybe when Bianca came into your office that time… Maybe she saw them back then…""Shut up!" Lars' grip on her tightened. "She isn't someone you get to smear!"Pearl, nearly out of breath, quickly change

On the way home, Royce handed me a pack of chamomile cookies.I was taken aback by the gesture. The sweet warmth, the subtle floral fragrance… The chamomile cookies had saved me countless times when my stomach was acting up because of the gastric.I accepted them. "Thank you…" "The chamomile scent is strong in this one. Just eat a little. Your stomach isn't in great shape," he said with a calm tone, as if he had always known about my stomach problems.I glanced at him, baffled."I saw the bottles of yoghurt drink in your fridge. Every one of them is low-sugar and targeted toward gastric patients."He had been paying close attention to me, even if he preferred to be quiet about it.I took a bite of the biscuit, feeling my heart stir.Never once did Royce bring up the phone call from Lars. The next day, I was woken up by my mother and quickly dragged away to try on my wedding makeup. My wedding day was approaching, and I had to try on six sets of dresses and six different mak

Lars kicked open the door, nearly losing control as he rushed into the living room. The place was stripped bare, as if Bianca had never lived there at all.Lars slumped onto the sofa—and then, he spotted a trash bin by the dining table. Inside was food and a birthday cake. His hands trembled as he lifted the lid on the cake box. "Wishing you happiness, Lars."The letters were written in white chocolate, neat and beautiful. It was the last birthday meal Bianca had prepared for him. And what had he said to her during their final call?"How many years have you had this gastric problem? Can't you just tough it out? Do you think I'd ask if I wasn't desperate?!""Bianca, are you really going to act up right when Pearl needs me most?"Lars buried his head in his hands and wept, waves of regret crashing over him.Suddenly, the door clicked as it opened.Pearl came in, eyes flickering. "Lars… Did she really leave?""No!" Lars shot to his feet. "She's just upset. I'll get her back."
