Chapter 2

Author: Mumu Woods
Backstage after the show, Diana Lawson hesitated before speaking.

"Ivy, didn't you say you were staying in Ridgehaven for Dexter?"

Diana had been my roommate back in college and was there for every stage of my relationship with Dexter.

"Did that little punk do something to you? Just say the word, and I'll march right over to his lab."

I managed a smile. "It's nothing that dramatic. I just got tired of it. We split on good terms."

I never thought I'd be the kind of person to say I got tired of someone. We spent all four years of college so wrapped up in each other that neither of us could stand to let go.

He won first place at the school track meet and kissed me in front of everyone. For my final recital, I wove his name into the melody I performed. Both schools' forums shipped us like crazy.

But barely a year after graduation, everything changed. I joined an orchestra and was either on the road or about to be.

Dexter and Brianna both got into the graduate program and stayed on at the university research institute. We hardly saw each other, and the few days a month we could actually sit down for a meal together, he'd bring Brianna along.

Whenever I asked why, it was always the same thing. "She's always saying she misses you. I can't just hog you all to myself."

So every date that was supposed to be just the two of us somehow turned into three. I reminded him over and over not to talk about biology, but they'd inevitably drift into bacterial reproduction or whatever conference was coming up.

I'd end up staring at my phone, quietly edging out of the conversation without even realizing it. After enough of that, I stopped trying to edge back in.

"Alright, if you've made up your mind," Diana said. "But once you go to Clearwater, it'll be hard to come back. You're really okay with leaving everything behind?"

Of course, it was hard. I'd spent five years in this city, and everywhere I looked, I saw traces of Dexter and me.

But I couldn't spend my whole life living inside those traces.

I picked up my violin and took a deep breath. I lifted my chin and walked out onto the stage. It was time I started walking toward something brighter.

The song was one I'd written myself, lyrics and melody, with the violin carrying straight through from beginning to end. But during the chorus, I froze for a split second.

The camera had landed on a man and a woman in the crowd. Every other couple the camera had panned to leaned in for a kiss on instinct, but they didn't.

After the song, the singer asked them, "Am I not romantic enough? How come you two didn't kiss?"

Dexter answered easily. "We're not a couple, just close colleagues. We're actually here with these two as well.

"So don't get the wrong idea. I do have a girlfriend. She just couldn't make it tonight because of work."

One of his coworkers muttered under his breath. "Your girlfriend throws a fit every other day. Honestly, you'd be better off just getting with Brianna."

"Seriously, a violin player? What do you two even have in common?"

The venue was loud, and the voices were low, but I still caught every word. Dexter didn't correct them. He just handed the microphone back to the staff with a polite smile.

Backstage, Diana was gripping her cup so hard it was about to crack.

"What is Dexter doing here? He brought Brianna to a concert?

"And as a group of four? Those other two are obviously a married couple."

I laughed bitterly. My chest felt like something was reaching in and squeezing.

He came to my show after all. He just brought Brianna. He just didn't recognize me on stage. He was just here to see the headliner with her.

I couldn't help myself. I texted him.

"Was the concert good?

"Too bad you two didn't kiss just now. That would've been something."

Dexter finally found the grease-stained diary and started turning through it, page by page."Today was Valentine's Day. I put a hair tie on Dexter's wrist, but he turned around and gave it to Brianna because she didn't have one.""He said jewelry wasn't allowed in the lab for safety reasons. He said Brianna couldn't go in without her hair tied back.""He said I didn't understand and that I was just being difficult.""He always has an excuse.""He doesn't know I'm only seven diary pages away from leaving him.""I got my period today, and the cramps were so bad I couldn't get out of bed. Dexter came home and brought me some painkillers without me asking.""He said it was the same kind he'd gotten for Brianna last time. She said they worked great, so they'd probably help me too.""I said thanks, but no thanks.""One page left. Then I'm done."The last page had only two lines."June 25th. This is the 100th time Dexter has ditched me to go help my best friend in the lab.""What

Dexter's entire body went rigid as he stared at those words.Wesley's fiancee's last name was Vance. My last name was Vance too.Brianna saw the comment too. Back in her dorm, she let out a scream of pure despair."Why? Why can't I ever measure up to her?"The noise woke people on the same floor. Someone rolled over and cursed. "What is wrong with you? It's the middle of the night. Let people sleep!"Meanwhile, downstairs, Wesley and I were walking hand in hand."You're really going to let Dexter into the institute?"Wesley stopped and tapped the tip of my nose. "What, do I really seem that petty to you? Relax. Dexter does have real talent. He tested in on his own merits. It has nothing to do with you."He thought for a moment. "Brianna, on the other hand, had decent enough grades in her undergrad, but these past few years haven't been great."I didn't care anymore about Brianna's life. What I cared about was the wedding next week.Dexter and Brianna somehow managed to sneak

Three years of silence passed before Dexter managed to test back into the research institute.Brianna latched onto him immediately. "Don't forget how I got kicked out in the first place. You owe me, and this time you're going to help me no matter what. Graduation's coming up, and I need to stay at the institute. I need this."They weren't together, but thanks to Brianna's maneuvering, the entire school had long since assumed they were a package deal."The exams are based on merit. There's nothing I can do!" Dexter shouted in frustration.Brianna didn't care. "I heard the institute's founder has a fiancee who's a musician. Get close to her. Do what you did with Ivy."Dexter looked at her like she'd lost her mind. "You're insane.""Yeah, I am. I've been insane for a while now. Ever since I saw Ivy performing on international stages while I'm still a nobody, I've been insane."I work part-time jobs, I write papers, I deal with people giving me a hard time every single day. Three ye

Dexter was fired from the research institute, but he didn't leave the university. He stayed on to finish his graduate degree.Everywhere he and Brianna went, the whispers followed."Look, that's the one who cheated.""Oh, right, the one who cheated with his girlfriend's best friend and then tried to pin it on her."Less than a week in, Brianna couldn't take it anymore. "Dexter, let's just leave. I'm losing my mind. Let's go find Ivy. If she just explains things one more time, if she just says I didn't betray her, this all goes away."Online harassment was a terrifying thing. It meant bugs showing up in someone's food for no reason, dorm windows getting smashed in the middle of the night, and packages arriving with bloody knives inside.Dexter wasn't faring much better."What do you want me to do?" he snapped. "Where am I supposed to go? Clearwater's a big place. Where would I even start looking for her?"He'd seen me online. Weston University had invited our orchestra to perfor

For the first time, Dexter found Brianna completely unreasonable. He regretted everything."No. I'm not going to let you hurt her anymore. You're the one with ulterior motives, going after your best friend's boyfriend. This is all on you."Brianna froze, then looked up in disbelief. "Dexter, what did you just say? You're blaming me?"You weren't blaming me when you held me. You weren't blaming me when you kissed me behind her back."Just admit it, Dexter. You're the one who cheated first. You're the one who hurt Ivy. You're the one who drove her away."Dexter's eyes went wide. He couldn't believe she'd known about everything he'd done and never said a word. She didn't just know—she'd pretended nothing had happened and happily soaked up every bit of attention he gave her.Other people in the cafeteria couldn't hold back anymore."Seriously, Dexter, you and Brianna were joined at the hip every single day. The rest of us all assumed you two were the couple.""Turns out you were ac

That single comment set the whole internet on fire."Holy shit, plot twist.""Wait, so what's actually going on? Did the guy really cheat with her best friend? Then what was that statement from the girlfriend about?"Almost at the same time, Diana stepped in. She posted security footage proving that when Dexter and Brianna were filmed together, I was out having dinner with my colleagues. Her caption read, "Look, I don't know what to tell you. I mentioned my friend got cheated on, and my boss just handed me the security tape."The flood of abuse pouring in made Dexter's vision go dark.Brianna was in hysterics. "Dexter, what do we do? The institute just sent the notice."The position she'd worked so hard to earn, the career she'd dreamed of, her academics, her entire future, all gone in an instant.I knew exactly what was going through her head. This was all my fault. We'd broken up, and I should have just disappeared. Why did I have to come back and comment? Why did I have to
