Chapter 3

Author: Mumu Woods
I sent the texts and turned off my phone, then got ready for the next piece.

Two hours later, when the show finally wrapped, Diana handed me a bottle of water. Her eyes drifted toward the common lounge.

"Dexter's been waiting for you in there this whole time. He's been pretty polite about it, too, and ordered takeout for everyone.

"Yours came in a little heart-shaped box."

I ignored that and headed for the bathroom to take off my makeup.

Brianna was already there, like she'd been waiting for me. The dressing room was full of performers removing their stage makeup.

She slipped behind me to help undo my hair the same way she used to back in school.

"Ivy, the piece you played was incredible. Were you happy to see us out there?"

She was always like that, always gentle, always able to find a graceful way through even the most awkward situations. But I was done playing along.

"Not even a little."

I tried to keep my voice steady, but there was still a dull ache spreading through my chest. "He's my boyfriend, and he showed up to a concert wearing a matching outfit with you. Why would I be happy?"

I hadn't told a single person where the show was, either. They'd come all the way across the city to get here, and it wasn't a short trip.

"Whether you came to see me or just used each other as arm candy for the headliner, you both know the answer to that."

The other performers glanced at each other, and every last one of them found a reason to slip out of the bathroom.

Brianna's face went white. "No, Ivy, let me explain."

She reached for me, but I stepped back. In the middle of the argument, she let out a sharp gasp. The floor was slippery, and her ankle twisted underneath her.

I reached out on instinct, but Dexter burst through the door and shoved me aside without a second thought. "Ivy Vance, how long are you going to keep this up?"

The disappointment on his face was bad enough. What came out of his mouth pinned me where I stood.

"You think just because your parents are dead, the rest of us have to treat you like a princess? I've put up with it, fine. But Brianna is not your punching bag."

Everything went still. I stared at him like I was looking at a stranger.

My parents died because they were heroes. They stepped in to save someone and were killed for it. I didn't even find out until sophomore year, when the man who did it was finally caught.

The day I went to the cemetery, both Dexter and Brianna stood at my mother's grave and swore they'd take care of me, that they'd never let me be hurt.

Now one of them was crying like I was the one who'd wronged her, and the other had his arms locked around her, looking at me like I was the enemy.

Dexter regretted the words almost as soon as they left his mouth. "I didn't mean—"

Brianna pushed out of his arms. "Dexter, what are you even saying?

"Ivy, please listen to me. It really isn't what you think. The tickets were from the organizers. The outfits were from logistics, and they bought them for the whole group. We didn't know the others weren't going to wear theirs.

"Or is this about Dexter helping me with my project for the past month? I'm so sorry, it was my first time leading something that big, and I was completely out of my depth."

Before she could even finish, the guilt in Dexter's eyes had already curdled into contempt. He'd already decided that I couldn't see the bigger picture, that I only knew how to throw tantrums.

"Ivy Vance, are you a child? Everything has to revolve around your feelings. The whole world has to orbit around you.

"Do you have any idea how hard Brianna works? Her research has saved lives. You think playing the violin even compares?"

He scooped Brianna up and walked out without looking back. I stood there alone, the whispers from outside the door cutting through, every one of them landing like a blade.

Diana rushed in. "What happened? I just saw Dexter carrying Brianna out."

My face was drained of color. It took me a long time to manage a smile.

"Diana, can you move my flight up to tomorrow? I really can't stay in Ridgehaven anymore."

Dexter finally found the grease-stained diary and started turning through it, page by page."Today was Valentine's Day. I put a hair tie on Dexter's wrist, but he turned around and gave it to Brianna because she didn't have one.""He said jewelry wasn't allowed in the lab for safety reasons. He said Brianna couldn't go in without her hair tied back.""He said I didn't understand and that I was just being difficult.""He always has an excuse.""He doesn't know I'm only seven diary pages away from leaving him.""I got my period today, and the cramps were so bad I couldn't get out of bed. Dexter came home and brought me some painkillers without me asking.""He said it was the same kind he'd gotten for Brianna last time. She said they worked great, so they'd probably help me too.""I said thanks, but no thanks.""One page left. Then I'm done."The last page had only two lines."June 25th. This is the 100th time Dexter has ditched me to go help my best friend in the lab.""What

Dexter's entire body went rigid as he stared at those words.Wesley's fiancee's last name was Vance. My last name was Vance too.Brianna saw the comment too. Back in her dorm, she let out a scream of pure despair."Why? Why can't I ever measure up to her?"The noise woke people on the same floor. Someone rolled over and cursed. "What is wrong with you? It's the middle of the night. Let people sleep!"Meanwhile, downstairs, Wesley and I were walking hand in hand."You're really going to let Dexter into the institute?"Wesley stopped and tapped the tip of my nose. "What, do I really seem that petty to you? Relax. Dexter does have real talent. He tested in on his own merits. It has nothing to do with you."He thought for a moment. "Brianna, on the other hand, had decent enough grades in her undergrad, but these past few years haven't been great."I didn't care anymore about Brianna's life. What I cared about was the wedding next week.Dexter and Brianna somehow managed to sneak

Three years of silence passed before Dexter managed to test back into the research institute.Brianna latched onto him immediately. "Don't forget how I got kicked out in the first place. You owe me, and this time you're going to help me no matter what. Graduation's coming up, and I need to stay at the institute. I need this."They weren't together, but thanks to Brianna's maneuvering, the entire school had long since assumed they were a package deal."The exams are based on merit. There's nothing I can do!" Dexter shouted in frustration.Brianna didn't care. "I heard the institute's founder has a fiancee who's a musician. Get close to her. Do what you did with Ivy."Dexter looked at her like she'd lost her mind. "You're insane.""Yeah, I am. I've been insane for a while now. Ever since I saw Ivy performing on international stages while I'm still a nobody, I've been insane."I work part-time jobs, I write papers, I deal with people giving me a hard time every single day. Three ye

Dexter was fired from the research institute, but he didn't leave the university. He stayed on to finish his graduate degree.Everywhere he and Brianna went, the whispers followed."Look, that's the one who cheated.""Oh, right, the one who cheated with his girlfriend's best friend and then tried to pin it on her."Less than a week in, Brianna couldn't take it anymore. "Dexter, let's just leave. I'm losing my mind. Let's go find Ivy. If she just explains things one more time, if she just says I didn't betray her, this all goes away."Online harassment was a terrifying thing. It meant bugs showing up in someone's food for no reason, dorm windows getting smashed in the middle of the night, and packages arriving with bloody knives inside.Dexter wasn't faring much better."What do you want me to do?" he snapped. "Where am I supposed to go? Clearwater's a big place. Where would I even start looking for her?"He'd seen me online. Weston University had invited our orchestra to perfor

For the first time, Dexter found Brianna completely unreasonable. He regretted everything."No. I'm not going to let you hurt her anymore. You're the one with ulterior motives, going after your best friend's boyfriend. This is all on you."Brianna froze, then looked up in disbelief. "Dexter, what did you just say? You're blaming me?"You weren't blaming me when you held me. You weren't blaming me when you kissed me behind her back."Just admit it, Dexter. You're the one who cheated first. You're the one who hurt Ivy. You're the one who drove her away."Dexter's eyes went wide. He couldn't believe she'd known about everything he'd done and never said a word. She didn't just know—she'd pretended nothing had happened and happily soaked up every bit of attention he gave her.Other people in the cafeteria couldn't hold back anymore."Seriously, Dexter, you and Brianna were joined at the hip every single day. The rest of us all assumed you two were the couple.""Turns out you were ac

That single comment set the whole internet on fire."Holy shit, plot twist.""Wait, so what's actually going on? Did the guy really cheat with her best friend? Then what was that statement from the girlfriend about?"Almost at the same time, Diana stepped in. She posted security footage proving that when Dexter and Brianna were filmed together, I was out having dinner with my colleagues. Her caption read, "Look, I don't know what to tell you. I mentioned my friend got cheated on, and my boss just handed me the security tape."The flood of abuse pouring in made Dexter's vision go dark.Brianna was in hysterics. "Dexter, what do we do? The institute just sent the notice."The position she'd worked so hard to earn, the career she'd dreamed of, her academics, her entire future, all gone in an instant.I knew exactly what was going through her head. This was all my fault. We'd broken up, and I should have just disappeared. Why did I have to come back and comment? Why did I have to
