Chapter 1

Author: Suki
During the thirty-day reconciliation period, I visited every place my husband, Declan James, and I had ever been to, sat in the spots we used to share, ordered his favorite food, and relived the memories we had made together.

I sent the photos and videos to him over and over again.

"Declan, look at how things used to be, please?"

He never replied.

On the very last day, I stayed in and dug out my old college phone.

The further up I scrolled through our chat history, the more deeply Declan had loved me. No matter how trivial my questions were, he answered every single one with care.

Even when I sent him a random photograph of a cloud, he'd reply: [Wish I could see it with you.]

Until I scrolled all the way back to the very first day we got together.

That night, he had sent me a picture of the night view outside his window, saying he was already home.

I began to smile, but the moment I tapped on the photo, I froze solid.

In the bottom corner of the glass reflection, a woman was leaning against his shoulder.

On her wrist was the friendship bracelet I had given to my best friend, Emma Anderson.

It turned out that every single time she urged me to let Declan go, she was just waiting for me to step aside and hand him over.

I sat there numbly for a long time, then sent Declan one final message: [We don't need to wait for the court's judgment.]

[I agree to the divorce.]

Not even a minute after the message went through, Declan's name flashed on my screen.

It was the first time he'd replied to me instantly in the entire thirty-day reconciliation period.

I stared at his name on the display, but my chest felt completely hollow, devoid of any hope.

When I picked up, he was quiet for two seconds before his voice dropped low.

"Harper, what are you trying to pull now?"

A sudden laugh burst out of me.

Even when I finally agreed to a divorce, in his eyes it wasn't letting go, just another stunt in a series of dramas.

My old phone's screen was still glowing, holding that exact photo in place.

In the glass reflection, Emma was leaning against his shoulder, wearing the friendship bracelet I had fastened around her wrist with my own hands.

The day I gave it to her, I had even laughed and said, "No matter who I end up marrying one day, you'll always be one of the most important people in my life."

Emma had pulled me into a hug, her voice as heavy and solemn as a vow. "Harper, I would never lie to you."

I stared at the reflection for a long time, and then I asked Declan, "Was the woman from three years ago Emma?"

The line on the other end went dead silent.

I heard his breathing turn heavy, like he had finally been cornered into a space he had spent three years trying to dodge.

After a long pause, he murmured, "That's in the past."

No explanation. No denial either.

A hot tear dropped onto the screen, blurring the two figures in the reflection into a messy smear.

"In the past?"

I laughed until my chest hurt.

"When I was trying to find out who she was three years ago, I stayed awake night after night. I dug my nails into my wrists until they bled. Emma held me while I cried, telling me to stop digging, saying you weren't worth destroying myself over."

My voice cracked and turned hoarse, the words barely making it out.

"Turns out she wasn't hurting for me at all. She was just terrified I'd figure out it was her."

Declan stayed silent on the other end of the line.

I didn't wait for him to say another word, cut the call dead, and walked straight out the door.

On the day the divorce was finalized, Switzerland experienced the heaviest snowfall of the year.I was in the kitchen helping Sylvia bake bread when the electronic file from my lawyer popped into my inbox. My phone buzzed. The screen flashed with a short message: [Divorce finalized.]I stared at those words for a long time, feeling none of the overwhelming peaks of sorrow or joy I once would have expected. It felt simply like a tight rope, strained for too long, finally snapping loose.Sylvia looked over at me. "Good news?"I gave a slow nod, then shook my head. "I guess so."She smiled warmly and pressed a piece of freshly baked bread directly into my hands."Then eat something sweet."By dusk, I walked down to the lake by myself.A thin layer of ice skimmed the water's surface, and the distant snow-capped peaks stood in quiet, solemn rows.I placed both friendship bracelets in a small box and buried it beneath a tree by the lake. Those items represented love, but they al

When Emma tracked me down, I wasn't surprised. She was wrapped in an oversized parka, her face bone-white and her body noticeably thinner. The second she caught sight of me, tears spilled straight down her cheeks."Harper, I know you don't want to see me, but I'm completely out of options."I was sitting by the first-floor window of the lodge when Sylvia brought over a mug of hot chocolate, giving Emma a sharp, frowning look before turning away without a word.Emma stood right in front of me, her voice breaking with sobs."Declan is cutting me off. He said once my health stabilizes, he'll arrange things for me, but he's never getting back together with me."My fingers froze around the rim of my cup.So, she hadn't come here to apologize after all. She was only here because Declan had finally discarded her.A sudden, bitter wave of irony washed over me."And?"The color drained even further from Emma's face."Harper, can't you talk some sense into him? You're getting divorced

Declan came looking for me again a week later. That day, when I stepped out of the clinic, I saw him standing under a streetlight holding a thick document envelope. He had lost a significant amount of weight, his eyes bloodshot and webbed with red veins. He looked like he hadn't slept in days."Harper."I came to a halt.He held the envelope out to me."I've signed the divorce papers. The house, the savings, the company shares—they're all yours."I didn't take it."I don't want them."A look of deep anguish flashed across Declan's eyes."This is what I owe you.""What you owe me isn't any of this."I looked straight at him, my voice level."Declan, what you owe me is a chance to be treated right. But those things are something you can never give back."His hand remained suspended in mid-air.After a long silence, he spoke in a low voice, "Emma and I are completely over."I lifted my eyes to look at him.He acted as if desperate to prove something."When she found out

The call from back home came from my mom, who had tracked down the landline number at Sylvia's bed-and-breakfast.She didn't say how she managed to find the address, but the moment her voice came through, she was already sobbing uncontrollably."Harper, why did you run off all the way over there? I'm worried about you."I held the receiver, feeling less than I'd expected."Are you worried about me, or are you worried that I'm actually not coming back?"The line went dead silent for a second. My mom's voice choked up. "That day at the hospital, I said the wrong thing."I asked quietly, "Which part?"She fell quiet. She had said so many devastating things that perhaps even she couldn't keep track of which one cut the deepest. So, I spelled it out for her."Was it telling me to bow my head to Emma, or was it letting Henry pin all the blame on me?"Heavy, muffled crying came through the receiver. After a long pause, my mom whispered, "Henry was just panicking that day."I cl

Declan didn't leave right away.He checked into the only hotel in town. When Sylvia served me breakfast, she whispered, "That guy downstairs has been waiting all morning."I kept my head down, quietly eating my breakfast without a word. Sylvia watched me for a moment and let out a soft sigh."If you don't want to see him, then don't. You've come all this way. You shouldn't have to keep putting yourself through more pain."My fingertips froze, my eyes stinging with sudden heat.In the past, everyone had always urged me to be sensible, to lower my head, and to keep from making a scene. Yet here was a total stranger, someone I'd known for only a few days, telling me it was okay to say no.At ten in the morning, I walked to the clinic to get my bandages changed. The local clinic was small, run by an American doctor named Lucas Carter. When he saw the wound on my wrist, his hands paused for half a second, though he didn't pry.He just asked softly, "Does it still hurt?"I shook my

When the plane touched down in Switzerland, dawn had not yet broken.Outside the window, the snow-covered mountains stood in gray-blue silhouettes, and the airport announcements echoed repeatedly in a language I couldn't understand. Dragging my luggage toward the exit, the wound on my wrist rubbed raw against my sleeve, sending sharp twinges of pain up my arm. Before I'd switched off my phone, Declan had called more than a dozen times. My mom had called five times.Even Henry had dropped a pair of messages: [Where did you go?][Stop sulking. Come home when you see this.]Staring at those lines of text, the irony burned.Back at the hospital, they called me crazy and accused me of destroying lives.Yet the moment I slipped away, they panicked, terrified I might actually vanish. What they wanted was never for me to heal and live well; they just wished I wouldn't make a messy scene that inconvenienced them.I popped out my SIM card and tossed it straight into a concourse trash
