Chapter 4

Author: Long Journey
Our hopes in the past could no longer be realized.

After leaving the ward, I went to visit my mother.

She was sound asleep, but her cheeks were noticeably more hollow.

Ever since my father had committed suicide, she had lost her spark. As if that wasn't bad enough, we were often harassed by debt collectors.

The perpetrator of these attacks lurked in the dark, so I brought her with me to seek refuge abroad.

Five years later, the murderer remained at large while my mother was diagnosed with brain cancer.

The door of the room clicked open.

I quickly wiped the tears from my face.

It was Henry. He noticed my red eyes and frowned.

"Are you crying?"

Without waiting for a reply, he sighed.

"You're not allowed to visit your mother again without my permission."

My eyes widened, and I stared up at him in disbelief, silently questioning 'why?'.

As if he could hear my question, Henry shot me a contemptuous smile.

"Because I'm paying for your mother's treatment," he said.

I withdrew my gaze. Soon, that would change.

Henry made many requests for his wedding. Whether it was the scene, the ring, or the wedding dress, he kept changing his mind.

However, when the decisions were finalized at last, something felt oddly familiar to me.

It wasn't until I saw the wedding dress that I finally reacted.

This was my ideal wedding that I had described to Henry back then.

The wedding dress was the one I had fallen in love with at first sight when we once passed by a bridal boutique when we were still college students.

I still remember I had pointed at the wedding dress and said to Henry, "When we get married in the future, I want to wear this dress. It's so beautiful and classy! But, it is a little expensive."

Henry had happily agreed. He had said, "No matter the price, I will work my hardest to buy it for you."

He hadn't lied. He had indeed bought the wedding dress in the end.

However, it was not for me.

The wedding dress fit Nina just right. She was smiling excitedly in the mirror, eager to show me how happy she was.

I forced a smile.

She threw a floral blouse at me and said, "You can wear this to our wedding. I've seen many bridesmaids wearing this while dancing at weddings."

I sensed the wicked intention in her eyes.

Henry glared at me coldly.

"It's just a shirt, don't make a fuss about it."

I nodded subserviently, ignoring the strange feeling in my heart.

Henry scoffed. He leaned toward me and whispered into my ear, "Are you feeling bad now? If you hadn't abandoned me, the one wearing this dress today would've been you."

His words pierced my heart like a sharp thorn. However, I could neither pull it out nor ignore it, so I fell into complete despair.

Soon, their wedding day arrived.

In the dressing room, Nina ordered my favorite coffee for me.

She held my hand and asked for forgiveness, just like back then whenever we fought.

"Julia, do you remember every time we fought, no matter how serious things got, we would forgive each other over a cup of coffee?"

I had no intention of reminiscing about our past.

"Nina, do we really need to talk about the past?"

Nina's eyes welled up with tears, her face etched with loneliness.

"I knew you wouldn't forgive me. Today should have been the happiest day in my life, but I guess that's too much to ask for.

"Julia, do you know how sad Henry was after you left? He missed you so much that he almost went crazy. Every night, he would drink himself to sleep. Do you even know how many times he got hospitalized because of his drinking problem? If it weren't for me, he would've died a long time ago.

"I love Henry, but I also care about you as a friend, Julia.

"I'm sure you can understand me, right? I've been by his side, looking after him. What right do you have to take him away from me the moment you came back?!"

She questioned me with tears in her eyes.

I sighed. "Don't worry, I won't take Henry from you. In fact, you won't be seeing me again soon."

Nina didn't believe what I said. All I could do was sip my coffee silently.

At one point, she started smiling and wiped the tears from her face.

"Alright, I'm relieved now."

As soon as she said that, several men entered the dressing room.

I was confused. In the next moment, I felt my body burning up before I crumpled to the floor.

I looked at Nina in disbelief as her smile grew even more distorted.

"Five years ago, I thought I'd never see you again, but here you are.

"Although I appreciate you as a friend, I don't appreciate my husband thinking of another woman.

"I'm sorry. I'll take the blame for this."

As the emcee began talking, Nina left the dressing room without looking back.

The moment the door clicked shut, the men lunged at me like a pack of hungry wolves.

I was woken up by a bucket of cold water.Nina stood before me expressionlessly.“You’re awake. Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you. I’m just here to tell you the truth.” My heart was beating wildly as I looked up at her warily. She smiled before her expression turned stone-cold.“Wanna know who killed your father? It was Grant Sawyer.” My eyes widened. Nina’s expression remained unchanged. She continued to explain slowly, “Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but Grant has feelings for you. However, since you only ever had eyes for Henry, he became friends with him to get closer to you.“When Grant realized you wouldn't break up with Henry, he sought out your father and asked him for your hand in marriage. However, your father refused to interfere with your relationship, so he bankrupted your family and forced your father to leap to his death. This entire trap was designed to make others think your family had crossed someone you shouldn’t have offended.“He even threatened you with Henry.

As soon as I said that, the door burst open.Nina was holding a thermos bottle when her cold gaze fell on me and Henry’s hands.I frowned when I was reminded of what she had done to me in the dressing room earlier today. I asked her coldly, “What are you doing here?” In the next second, the hostility in Nina’s eyes was replaced by a concerned look.“Julia, I heard you were hospitalized, so I dropped by to see you. None of us expected your mother would pass so soon, so don’t think too much of it. I’m sure she doesn’t want you to feel devastated over her passing, right?” Even after what happened, she was still keeping up the act.I couldn’t be bothered with her games.“Enough with your hypocrisy, Nina. Did you think I’d fall for your spiked drink again?” My mother had died. I was all alone in this world now, so I had nothing holding me back.Nina’s face turned deathly pale. She subconsciously glanced at Henry.Immediately, a frown appeared on his face. There was a somber loo

After leaving the wedding venue, Grant offered to send me to the hospital.I shook my head and refused."Bring me to the airport. I'm still okay." I could feel the effects of the drug slowly wearing off. Visiting a hospital at this moment would be like walking into a trap; Henry would never let me go. When we arrived at the airport, Grant brought me to the departure gate. However, I frowned when I didn't see any signs of my mother."Where's my mother?" I asked him.Grant poured me a glass of water and replied, "We'd stick out like a sore thumb if we moved together. I've already asked a friend to bring your mother away first." I let out a sigh of relief. The cold water made me feel so much better. For some reason, I began to feel a sense of unease.I could still hear Henry's pleas in my ears, just like five years ago. We were the only people at the departure gate. While I awaited the boarding announcement, I paced back and forth restlessly. All of a sudden, Grant's phone

Feeling dissatisfied, the man gave me a few hard kicks and spat at my face."Looks like you like things the hard way, huh?" I fell to the floor like a heavy sack of potatoes. At that moment, I heard my phone ringing.I looked over to the dressing table where my phone was. I crawled toward my phone, but someone grabbed my foot and dragged me back.In my struggles, I cried out, "Let me go! Henry won't forgive you if he finds out about this!" As soon as I said that, the men burst into laughter."Mr. Palmer? He's too busy with the wedding ceremony to care about you." "Stop fighting! Just stay still and cooperate with us. You'l

"You've lost your mind, Julia!"With a dark expression, he pulled Nina out of the water and carried her in his arms. She clutched her stomach and groaned in pain."Please don't blame her, Henry. She didn't mean it." Henry glared at me coldly before he stormed off with Nina in his arms.Still in a state of shock, I collapsed to the floor. In the middle of the night, Henry angrily kicked open my door and dragged me out of bed."Julia Sachs! Do you know that you almost killed my child?! I didn't think you'd be this cruel!" He began strangling me, and I could see the hatred in his eyes. It seemed that he really was going to kill me tonight. My face flushed red, and I struggled to breathe. Right before I suffocated, Henry loosened his grip. He stared down as I coughed my lungs out on the floor. "Nina's pregnant, so we will be getting married soon. I have set our wedding date on the first day of next month," he said indifferently."Since you're her best friend, you will b
