Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
However, the first thing I touched was a soft, sagging photo album.

The moment I opened it, I found the photos inside had been cut to shreds. Not a single one was intact.

Written on the last page of the photo album in a signature pen were the words, "Percy, you can't beat me!"

The words made my vision blur with anger and resentment. At the end of the message, she had drawn a crude smiley face.

Shreds of paper fell through the gaps between my fingers, and a sharp ring filled my ears.

After Mom was gone, these photos were all I had left of her.

"It has to be Carlene again!" Percy shouted, staring at the mess on the floor. He was blind to the fact that I was falling apart right next to him. "I didn't even hold the wedding against her, and here she is picking a fight with me first!"

He turned toward the door. "Ines, don't stop me. This time I'm really going to give her a lesson she'll never forget!"

I reached out to grab him, but my hand closed on empty air. I jerked my head around in time to see the front door slammed against the wall. It was so loud that it left my ears ringing.

I sat on the floor holding the ruined album for as long as Percy was gone. Only when my fingers had gone numb from the cold did I dazedly pull out my phone.

Carlene had just posted on Instagram. It was a gloating selfie with a caption that cut deep.

"Someone lost to me again today. Once a loser, always a loser."

I was staring blankly at the caption when Percy's call came in.

"Ines, I just remembered I was supposed to help you plan for the wedding today. But Carlene really went too far! I went to her place because I wanted to get back at her for you. I'm coming home right now—"

"Don't bother." I cut him off, swallowing the hurt. "Percy, let's just break up. You and Carlene have seriously messed up my life."

Despite myself, the last word still came out with a catch in my throat.

Percy and Carlene had been at each other's throats for years, from fighting over rankings back in school to competing for resources once they started working.

Eventually, even my affairs became something they had to get involved in. They'd fight tooth and nail every time, leaving me forgotten on the sidelines.

On our dates, they'd argue over who got which seat to the point of flipping the table. I could only stand there awkwardly, cleaning up the mess.

And when Carlene ruined the surprise Percy had prepared for my birthday, I ended up having to comfort him in his fit of anger.

After putting up with it for so long, even the things I cherished the most were torn to shreds.

Percy was panicking on the other end of the phone. "Ines, don't cry. I'm sorry. Just wait—I'm going back right now."

Less than ten minutes later, the door was flung open. Panting, Percy came in and pulled me into his arms.

"Ines, I really know I was wrong now. Can we not break up? I swear I'm cutting Carlene out for good."

I looked up at his guilty and anxious face.

He was always like this. No matter how far he was, he would always rush back at the first moment to comfort me. Except for the thing with him and Carlene, he was a great partner in every other way.

However, it was precisely this that hurt me the most.

I gently pushed him away and was silent for a few seconds before speaking in a low, quiet voice.

"If you really want to cut her off, I have a way. Percy, let's press charges. She broke into our home and destroyed our property."

Percy was stunned for a moment. "Press charges?"

I stared at his shocked face. "Don't you hate Carlene? Don't you want her to get locked up for a few months to teach her a lesson?"

As I spoke, I stood up and walked toward the door without hesitation.

"Let's go right now."

No sooner had I touched the doorknob than Percy pressed my hand down.

"You're right. We definitely have to press charges." He placed his hand on my shoulder, his voice gentle. "But you must be exhausted. There's no need for you to make a trip to the law firm.

"Have you forgotten that my good buddy Tristan is a lawyer? Just leave this to me. I'll definitely make Carlene pay."

Upon hearing that, some of the tightness in my chest finally began to ease.

Marsha mulled over my words for a moment, then said through gritted teeth, "Fine. But don't think I'll let you off for what you did today. And you'd better stay away from Percy!"With that, she gave the door a vicious kick and turned to leave.Over the next few days, Percy kept pestering me as frequently as before. Even the news that Carlene had been beaten into a vegetative state and hospitalized didn't seem to weigh on him at all.Meanwhile, I was looking forward to the day Percy discovered Marsha had stolen his ID.But a few days later, word got around that Percy and Marsha had a huge falling out.As I passed by his apartment building, Percy was standing outside, so furious his eyes were red."Mom, how could you steal my ID and marry me off to Carlene? I already told you that the only woman I'll ever be with is Ines!"Marsha crossed her arms and replied dismissively, "What's so great about Ines anyway? Carlene may bicker with you day in and day out, but privately she's been w

"Ines, apologize to your friend. You did hit her first, after all," Dad urged. As the whispers around me grew louder, Carlene curled her lips into a taunting smile. She fixed me with a vicious stare and said, "I'll make you pay for everything, Ines. Percy is mine. The more he tries to get near you, the harder I'm going to ruin your life."Far from being rattled by her smug expression, I found myself laughing."Carlene, clearly you still don't realize that you've crossed more people than just me in your little game to steal Percy."A flicker of confusion crossed Carlene's eyes. Right then, a group of people suddenly rushed up and surrounded her.The one in the lead stepped forward and pinned her viciously to the ground. Then, he kicked her twice."We finally found you, you lunatic who blocked the road!" The man grabbed her by the hair and slapped her twice across the face. "Because of you, our boss's wife didn't get treated in time. Do you have any idea who he is? One snap of his

One day, when I walked to the ground floor of my apartment building, I saw a crowd gathered around."What's that man doing up on the roof?""He's not going to jump, is he?"I looked up and recognized that familiar figure at once. I rubbed my aching forehead and made my way up the stairs to the rooftop.Hearing the noise, Percy turned around. When he saw it was me, his eyes reddened."Ines, you finally came."The dim yellow light revealed his haggard face and bloodshot eyes."Ever since you left, my life's been a complete mess," he continued in a trembling voice thick with tears. "You can't just walk away like this!"Seeing that I was calm as ever, he gritted his teeth and swung one leg over the edge of the rooftop."Ines, if you really dare to cut me off for good, I'll jump from here!" he screamed at the top of his lungs. "At worst, I'll haunt you for life the same way Carlene haunts me!"The moment the words left his mouth, he froze.A beat later, a flicker of realization s

"Carlene, didn't I tell you to leave Ines alone? If you so much as hurt a single hair on her head, I—" Percy paused, every word squeezed out through his teeth. "I won't let you get away with it."I was completely thrown. What was he playing at now?Carlene clutched her cheek, her body trembling. Clearly, she was scared senseless by the vicious look Percy had just shown. The next second, he turned, his eyes full of panic."Ines, did she hurt you?"He grabbed my wrist. When his thumb brushed over an old scar, he whipped his head around and glared daggers at Carlene."Guess I should've handed you over to the cops long ago! Officers, arrest this snake of a woman right now!"I quietly pulled my hand back and said in a lukewarm voice, "I got that scar a while back."I glanced up at his stunned face and forced out a bitter smile. "But Carlene gave me that one too. It's from last time at the wedding. She scratched me when she shoved me. You just didn't notice because you were too busy a

By now, the constant fighting between Percy and Carlene had left me completely on edge. If I really brought the child into this world, wouldn't he end up suffering because of them too?Seeing that I still wouldn't say a word, Percy clenched his fists and headed for the door. At the threshold, he stopped in his tracks."Ines, give me some time. I'll prove it to you."His footsteps faded away down the end of the hallway.I finally breathed a sigh of relief and was about to lie down for a quick nap when the hospital room door was pushed open again.Thinking Percy had come back, I said impatiently without turning over, "I've already told you that there's no future for us."No sooner had I spoken than someone ripped the blanket right off me. I was yanked upright before I even knew what was happening, totally stunned. It took me half a second to realize the person in front of me was Carlene. She raised her hand to slap me again, but I caught it and held firm."What?" I said sharply.

When I opened my eyes again, I had already been wheeled out of the operating room.I gently ran my hand over my belly. It was flat again, as if nothing had ever been there. My heart felt hollow, as though a hole had been punched through it. But more than that, there was a sense of finality.Percy and I were completely over, so there was even less reason to bring the child into this world. My phone was still buzzing on the bedside table. Every message was from Percy."Ines, where did you go? I can explain what happened today. "You can be mad at me. Just don't shut me out. "Ines, it's our wedding today."My finger hovered over the screen, and I let out a cold laugh. So he did remember it was supposed to be our wedding day.The screen lit up and went dark again. Annoyed, I typed out, "Percy, we're done."He went quiet immediately. The typing bubble appeared and disappeared over and over before one message finally came through."Where are you? I'm coming to find you right now.
