Percy Fritz flinched. A few seconds later, he finally looked in my direction. When his gaze landed on my bleeding forehead, he stumbled toward me."Ines, are you okay?"I turned my head and swept my eyes over the mess around us. When I opened my eyes again, I had already been wheeled out of the operating room.I gently ran my hand over my belly. It was flat again, as if nothing had ever been there.My heart felt hollow, as though a hole had been punched through it. But more than that, there was a sense of finality.Percy and I were completely over, so there was even less reason to bring the child into this world.My phone was still buzzing on the bedside table. Every message was from Percy."Ines, where did you go? I can explain what happened today. "You can be mad at me. Just don't shut me out. "Ines, it's our wedding today."My finger hovered over the screen, and I let out a cold laugh. So he did remember it was supposed to be our wedding day.The screen lit up and went dark again. I was yanked upright before I even knew what was happening, totally stunned.It took me half a second to realize the person in front of me was Carlene. She raised her hand to slap me again, but I caught it and held firm."What?" I said sharply.

"Carlene, didn't I tell you to leave Ines alone? If you so much as hurt a single hair on her head, I—" Percy paused, every word squeezed out through his teeth. "I won't let you get away with it."I was completely thrown. What was he playing at now?Carlene clutched her cheek, her body trembling. Clearly, she was scared senseless by the vicious look Percy had just shown. The next second, he turned, his eyes full of panic."Ines, did she hurt you?"He grabbed my wrist. When his thumb brushed over an old scar, he whipped his head around and glared daggers at Carlene."Guess I should've handed you over to the cops long ago!
