Chapter 4

The Orange
After I hung up, the hotel butler brought in an expensive, custom-made wedding dress.

“Donna Lena, this was sent up at Don Nico’s request.”

I had already blocked Nico’s number, so he called the hotel landline.

“The wedding will proceed as planned! I expect you to behave these next few days and stop fooling around. Lena, this is your last chance. Don’t disappoint me!”

I didn’t take his words to heart. I worked day and night revising the M&A plan, and privately contacted minority shareholders of the Luciano family to acquire their shares.

Two days before the wedding, Sophia stopped me in the hotel lobby.

She suddenly dropped to her knees, crying, “Please give my son back! I was wrong. I shouldn’t have taken Nico from you. I’m willing to leave the Luciano family and disappear forever! My son is still so young. If anything happens to him, I won’t live either!”

I looked at her coldly. “The hotel is fully monitored. I haven’t even left these past two days. How could I have taken your child?”

“Who else could it be if not you?” Sophia screamed hysterically.

The onlookers around us raised their phones to record, cursing me as a vicious woman.

Nico rushed in, pulled Sophia into his arms, and looked at me with burning anger.

“Lena, I didn’t expect you to be this cruel, not even sparing a baby!”

“I said it wasn’t me.”

He seethed, “If not you, then who? Do you have to drive her to death before you’re satisfied?”

I looked at him coldly. “Nico, if you have evidence that I took your child, then call the police. Let them decide.”

Hotel security stepped forward and stood in front of me. Nico left with Sophia, furious.

That night, I didn’t sleep well. My dreams were filled with scenes of my mother shooting herself, her blood splashing onto me, burning hot.

The next day, my nose was congested. When I went to the hospital to get medicine, I ran into Nico.

“We found the child. He’s in shock and has a high fever.”

He blocked my path. “Lena, if you have any grievances, take them out on me. Don’t hurt the innocent! Come with me now and apologize to Sophia and the child!”

Dizzy and irritated, I said, “Why should I apologize to that b*st*rd? I’d rather he were dead.”

Nico didn’t get angry. He only watched me leave.

After getting my medicine and arriving at the underground parking garage, a figure suddenly appeared behind me and covered my mouth and nose with a drugged cloth.

My vision blurred. When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed.

A nurse was adjusting the IV, her tone sympathetic.

“You’re awake. The hysterectomy was successful. Please rest well…”

Hysterectomy?

I felt as if struck by lightning. I struggled to sit up but fell heavily to the ground.

Nico pushed the door open and looked at me.

“I ordered it.”

“The Luciano family already has a legitimate heir. Removing your uterus is a warning. So you won’t have improper thoughts in the future, giving birth to a child to compete for inheritance and disrupt the family.

“Only this way will Sophia feel at ease ending things with me.”

He bent down and touched my hair, his tone falsely gentle.

“The wedding will proceed as planned. I will give you everything a Luciano family donna should have, except a child.”

I tried to call the police, but Nico snatched my phone away.

“Don’t waste your effort. Stay here and recover. Tomorrow morning, I’ll send someone to take you to the wedding.”

I stared at him, hatred reaching its peak. “Get out!”

On the day of the wedding, the most luxurious hotel ballroom in New Haven was filled to capacity.

Nico kept checking his watch, but the bride never appeared.

“Don Nico, something’s wrong. Ms. Sorrentino is missing!”

At the same time, the large screen in the ballroom suddenly changed.

I was sitting in the council chamber at the Luciano family headquarters, with all the family elders standing behind me.

“On behalf of the Luciano family council, I hereby announce by unanimous vote that Nico Luciano is removed from his position as don, effective immediately. All his authority within the family is revoked.”

The next day, I received a call from Sophia, claiming she had insider information about the Sorrentino family’s downfall, and asked to meet me by the seaside. On a cliff overlooking the waves, Sophia’s eyes glinted with unmasked malice when she saw me.“Lena, don’t think that Nico still pining for you means you’ve won. Let me tell you, when the Sorrentino family fell, he played a part. He sold your family’s business secrets to our rivals.“He originally wanted you as his mistress, but you escaped to Nassau.”She sneered, her eyes sharp as a blade. “And look at you, lucky enough to land Vincent. But your good days are over. A murderer only deserves prison!”With that, she let out a scream and tumbled into the raging sea like a kite cut loose.Nico arrived in a rush. His eyes were fixed on the waves, but he didn’t move forward. I expected him to explode in rage, but instead, he turned away, expressionless.Vincent stepped up from behind, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. “Co

Vincent immediately arranged for New Haven’s most elite private hospital to be fully reserved. He summoned all the top specialists for a comprehensive examination, making sure I had no lingering complications.Meanwhile, Nico’s days were miserable. He drowned his sorrows in alcohol every day, while his three young children cried nonstop at home, driving him into deeper frustration. Then he received notice that the Luciano family would hold a new general shareholders’ meeting, and as a minor shareholder, he still had a seat. That day, Nico woke early, carefully groomed himself, even spritzing expensive cologne. Sophia, jealous to the point of madness, still tried to appear virtuous, helping him choose his outfit.“You don’t need to attend today,” Nico said coldly.“You’re my brother’s widow. Always appearing with me isn’t appropriate. We agreed that after you have your son, we’re even.”Sophia’s eyes reddened. “Nico, do you regret marrying me?”The Nico of old would never tol

Back then, Nico and I were known as the model couple in college. After graduation, he said he wanted to build his own family power. So I gave up the opportunity to further my studies in Nassau and stayed by his side. The early days were difficult. I went to my father and persuaded him to invest a large sum anonymously, helping Nico gain a foothold. He always said I was his lucky star and that he would treat me well for life. All of it collapsed after his brother died unexpectedly. He said he had promised his brother to take care of his widowed sister-in-law, Sophia. Again and again, he left me on important occasions to accompany her.Until the wedding day, in front of the entire New Haven underworld, he declared that he would take responsibility for the pregnant Sophia.Sophia, standing beside him, had a trace of gloating in her eyes. She raised her voice deliberately.“Lena, I heard Vincent went to the same university as you. Did you two get together long ago? Two-timing Nico

Applause filled the hall. The guests stepped back, making way.Holding a bottle of champagne, I walked slowly toward the round stage, but halfway there, Nico grabbed my arm.“Lena, do you know what kind of occasion this is? You dare cause trouble? Get out! If you anger Don Vincent and his wife and ruin my plans, I won’t spare you!”His grip was tight. In a gown, I couldn’t easily break free.At that moment, a hand wrapped around my waist and pulled me steadily into an embrace.“Nico, why are you laying hands on my wife?”Seeing Vincent’s arm around my waist, Nico froze, then let out a scoff.“Don Vincent, you may have been deceived by this woman. She’s my ex-fiancée. I called off the engagement because she was unfaithful. Now she’s used some trick to get in here…”His voice was so loud that guests began gathering around.Sophia stepped forward and added, “Don Vincent, Lena has always liked getting involved with married men. You should be careful.”The banquet organizer hurrie

Nico was stunned at first, then his face turned contemptuous.“Lena, stop messing around! Who do you think you are? What right do you have to announce personnel decisions for the Luciano family?”He turned to the guests and explained, “Lena is still angry with me. This is just a little game between husband and wife.”However, Nico’s confidants at the banquet began receiving official dismissal notices from the family headquarters.Nico had always been certain that the Luciano family’s M&A financing project with the Gambino family was secure. Now, unease rose in his chest.Sophia held her child, with two little girls beside her. A trace of gloating flashed in her eyes as she spoke mockingly, “Could it be that Lena slept with all the elders of the Luciano family? Otherwise, why would they let her sit in the council chamber?”Seeing Nico’s expression grow darker, Sophia spoke again in a gentle tone, “Nico, it seems Lena still blames me. Why don’t I apologize to her with the three ch
