Chapter 4

Author: Greencloud
The moment Ollie was rushed into the ER, Dr. Hollis warned me that his life was in immediate danger.

"He's developed a severe arrhythmia. We need to operate now."

My hand shook so badly I could barely sign my name.

"Where's his mother?" the nurse asked.

I stared at the crooked M on the form.

"Dead," I said coldly.

Ten minutes later, Dr. Hollis returned with worse news.

Ollie's assigned surgeon had been called away. The hospital had also received a request from a parent to postpone his operation and transfer him to a private facility.

"I never filed that," I said.

He opened the record. There was Vivian's electronic signature.

I called her nine times before she picked up. Applause filled the background.

"Why did you stop Ollie's surgery?"

"Blake contacted an overseas medical team. Their success rate is higher."

"Ollie isn't stable enough to be transferred!"

"We can't believe everything local doctors tell us. Blake wouldn't do anything to hurt him."

Blake spoke from beside her.

"Miles, I already sent the records to the specialists. They said he's too young for surgery. We should wait at least three months."

The doctor took the phone from me.

"Who told you to wait three months? Your son could go into heart failure at any time. If we don't operate tonight, he may not survive!"

Vivian paused. "Then find another surgeon."

"This is a highly specialized procedure. We can't simply replace the surgeon. The one assigned to your son has already left. The earliest we can get him back is six hours from now."

The call ended.

I waited outside the ER until five that afternoon, when Vivian finally appeared.

Blake trailed behind her with a bouquet of flowers.

"Miles, I'm sorry," he said, looking suitably miserable. "I was only trying to help Ollie. I didn't realize the doctors here were so conservative."

I shoved him away. The flowers hit the floor.

Vivian stepped between us.

"Are you going to hit him again?"

"Withdraw the transfer request."

"I already did."

She bent to retrieve the bouquet and handed it back to Blake.

"The hospital's sorting things out. Stop blaming him for everything."

I stared at her. "He told you to cancel the operation?"

"I'm the one who signed the request. If you need someone to blame, blame me."

As if that made anything better.

The ER door opened. Dr. Hollis removed his mask.

"We've stabilized your son's heartbeat for now, but he's still in extreme danger. Prepare yourselves."

They let me go in to see Ollie.

He lay among tubes and monitors, struggling to open his eyes.

"Daddy, I dreamed Mommy came to get me."

Fighting back tears, I said, "She came, sweetheart. She's right outside."

A little hope lit his face.

I looked back. Vivian stood in the doorway without coming in.

Then Blake clutched his chest and crouched against the wall.

"Vivian, I can't breathe."

She rushed to support him. After a brief hesitation, she turned to me.

"I'll take Blake to the emergency department. I'll be right back."

I blocked the door.

"Ollie nearly died. Just now."

"Blake's not feeling well either."

I grabbed her collar. Whatever control I had left broke.

"He's your son!"

She pried my hands loose and pushed me back toward the bed.

"That's exactly why I know you'll look after him. Blake only has me."

The door closed between us.

Ollie's small hand sank onto the mattress.

"Mommy left?"

I turned away to wipe my eyes.

"She went to get you a present."

"Then I'll wait."

He closed his eyes with the faintest hopeful smile.

At eight that evening, the operating room was finally ready.

As the nurses wheeled him away, Ollie kept watching the far end of the corridor. Nobody was there.

Just before the doors closed, he whispered, "Daddy, did Blake buy Mommy again?"

I bent to kiss his forehead.

"No. This time, we're the ones who don't want her."

The doors swung shut.

At that exact moment, a notification lit up my screen.

"Administrator Vivian Sterling has changed family-member permissions."

"Blake Ellison has been designated permanent priority companion."

I took a screenshot and called Vivian's father, Raymond Sterling, chairman of Sterling Group.

"Raymond, you once said that if I returned the shares that came from Eleanor, I could name my terms."

A pause. "What do you want, Miles?"

I looked at the locked operating-room doors.

"I want Vivian out of our marriage with nothing."

Six months later, Ollie and I moved south.I returned to architectural design, the work I'd done before my marriage. My first project back was a pediatric cardiac rehabilitation center. On opening day, Ollie wore a tiny suit and helped cut the ribbon. His recovery was going well. He only had to pause for breath when he ran too fast.Raymond visited occasionally. Before every visit, he asked whether Ollie wanted to see him.Vivian didn't come around anymore.I'd heard she'd sold her house to repay the company's losses and started over as an entry-level project consultant. No assistant managed her calendar now. Nobody competed for a slot.At last she had an abundance of the one thing she'd always withheld from us: free time that nobody wanted.Blake's studio was liquidated and his accounts were permanently banned. He faced legal consequences for the forged medical documents and his other misconduct, then left the city.Sterling Group abolished every policy connected to the auct

Blake eventually confessed to forging the medical opinion and rigging the auction's administrative system, and he paid back every cent he'd taken.During the investigation, he handed over extensive message logs.Every time Vivian leaked my balance to him, every time she made him permanent priority, it was there in black and white. It took only three pages of evidence to silence her.The first was a message sent on Ollie's parent day."Miles can only bid $300. Offer $900. Then he'll understand that my time isn't a free perk that comes with marriage."The second was the payment record after Ollie's diagnosis.Vivian had first credited Blake's account with $3,000, then directed him to bid $2,250.The third was an administrator command entered the night before Ollie's surgery."No matter how much Miles bids, declare Blake the winner."The judge asked Vivian whether she disputed any of it.She sat at the defendant's table, her face ashen."No."At last, she admitted that every

Ollie was discharged before the divorce hearing.Vivian didn't come on the day he returned to kindergarten. It wasn't because she didn't want to.He'd told her not to.Ms. Harper arranged another parent day just for him. This time, I held his hand and walked him into the classroom. He drew two people on a sheet of paper: himself and me."Why didn't you draw your mommy?" Ms. Harper asked.Ollie answered solemnly, "Mommy used to cost money. She's too expensive now, so we don't buy her anymore."The room went quiet.I crouched and wiped the paint from his fingers."Ollie, people aren't things you can buy.""Then why did Mommy auction herself?"I had no answer.Outside, Vivian stood on the other side of the classroom window. She'd heard every word. Her eyes slowly welled up.She didn't come in. She left the gift she'd brought with Ms. Harper.Inside the envelope was a handwritten coupon."Time with Mommy. Every day. Never expires. No bidding required."Ollie studied it and

On the day of the board vote, Vivian was suspended from every position she held. Her auction platform was shut down at the same time. Before it went offline, Raymond disclosed the administrative logs to every user on the platform. The supposedly fair system had one hidden rule: "Account: Blake Ellison. Automatically overrides every other winning bid."Her mother, Eleanor; her business partner, Grant Hale; and even senior executives who'd paid large amounts to secure meeting time had all been pushed aside for Blake.Grant terminated their partnership on the spot. Several executives jointly demanded a full audit.Blake went online to claim Vivian's husband was persecuting him and that every payment he received had been a willing gift.He also uploaded a recording of Vivian saying, "Miles won't leave. He'll make a fuss and then come back on his own."Overnight, the internet turned on her. This time, the anger was directed at Vivian, not me.She spent an entire night outside the

The first thing Ollie asked for when he woke up was water.I dampened his lips with a cotton swab. He glanced toward the door."Mommy didn't come?""She did.""Then why isn't she here?"I smoothed his blanket."Because she hasn't been a very good mommy. Now she has to get back in line."Ollie thought for a while."Do we have to let her get back in line?""Why?""I don't want her anymore."Something crashed outside the room.Vivian stood beyond the observation window, the pieces of a shattered thermos scattered at her feet.It was the first time she'd heard her own son say he no longer wanted her.She waited outside his room for two days. Blake called more than a dozen times. She didn't pick up once.On the third day, when Ollie was moved to a regular ward, Vivian arrived with the building blocks he loved."Want Mommy to help build a castle?"Ollie didn't look at her."Do I have to bid for this?"She froze beside the bed."No. Never again.""And when Blake calls, wi

Raymond arrived at the hospital that night. He didn't ask about the company shares first. He stood on the other side of the observation window, looking at Ollie for a long time."Where's Vivian?""With Blake."His face darkened. He took out his phone.Vivian answered promptly. "Dad? What's wrong?""Your son is in surgery. Where the hell are you?""Blake couldn't breathe. I'll come as soon as he's settled.""Get back here. Now."Raymond ended the call and faced me."Miles, if you return the shares, I can rein Vivian in. But making her leave the marriage with nothing isn't realistic."I pushed a folder toward him."I own twenty-seven percent of Sterling Group. Seven years ago, when the company was about to collapse, my father risked everything he had to save it. Those shares belong to the Carver family."I trusted Vivian, so I never exercised my voting rights."I connected my phone to the room's display and showed him the bidding records, account statements, and hospital pa
