Chapter 4

Existence
The controversy was still unfolding when I received a notice about the thesis film review.

Every graduating student was required to submit an original film project, and the results would directly affect our final grades and eligibility for the graduate recommendation program. I'd submitted my original documentary proposal, "Blind Spot," months earlier, after spending half a year developing it.

But the day before the review, my faculty advisor suddenly summoned me to his office.

"Evan, what's going on between you and Daniel?" He dropped two printed proposals onto his desk, his brow furrowed. "The two of you submitted graduation projects that are identical, from the concept and storyboards to the narration."

I felt like I'd been struck by lightning. I immediately picked up Daniel's proposal and flipped through it.

He'd copied everything word for word. Even the two deliberate typos I'd left in my proposal to prove it was my original work were there. And I'd only ever shared that proposal with Evelyn. I'd sent it to her because I needed her help choosing the music for the project.

I stormed out of the office and called her. "Did you send my graduation project proposal to Daniel?" My voice trembled with cold fury.

There was a two-second silence on the other end. When Evelyn finally spoke, there wasn't even a hint of guilt in her voice. "Daniel has already lost a ton of followers because of the copyright mess. If he fails his graduation project too, he'll have to delay graduation."

Then she added, almost as if she were making a perfectly reasonable request, "Evan, your grades are great. You could switch to another project and still get a good grade. Why can't you help him just this once?"

I clenched my phone so tightly that my nails dug into my palm. "That's my graduation project. What gives you the right to give it away?"

"Evan, we're going to get married someday," Evelyn sighed. Her voice was calm, almost reassuring. "Your talent is our shared resource. Daniel is our friend. What's wrong with helping him out? Once we're married, there's no need to draw such a hard line between what's yours and what's mine."

That was the moment something inside me finally broke. This wasn't some momentary lapse in judgment. Deep down, Evelyn had always seen me as a resource, someone she could keep taking from whenever Daniel needed something.

My work, my future, even my dignity could be sacrificed if it meant helping the childhood friend she cared about. And somehow, she expected me to accept it simply because we were supposed to get married someday.

I hung up. Then I opened our chat and typed, "Evelyn, this is the end of us. I'm not withdrawing my project. I'll bring all my original drafts and source files to the review tomorrow and show them to the panel."

After sending the message, I blocked her.

Meanwhile, Evelyn was just about to open my message when Daniel called. His voice was frantic. "Evelyn, what do we do? The professor says my project is identical to Evan's…"

He sounded almost panicked. "Is Evan still mad at me? He knows how important this project is to me. Why would he submit his project now? Isn't he deliberately trying to make the professor think I plagiarized him?"

Hearing the panic in Daniel's voice, Evelyn's heart ached for him.

Without thinking twice, she opened their chat and angrily typed, "Evan, enough already!"

Then she demanded, "Withdraw your graduation project! You have plenty of other drafts anyway. Let Daniel use this one for now. Don't take this too far!"

She hit "Send." But instead of going through, a system notification immediately appeared.

"Delivered. Rejected by the recipient."

Evelyn's mind went completely blank. For a moment, she could hear nothing but the ringing in her ears.

Three years after graduation, I officially became a partner at a documentary studio and began independently directing and filming projects that were truly my own. My name started appearing regularly on nomination lists at major film festivals. Whenever my new team took a group photo, everyone made sure to leave a spot for me right in the center. This time, someone else was always behind the camera, pointing it at me. I was no longer the shadow standing behind the lens, documenting other people's friendships while never having a place in the frame—or even my own name attached to the story. That fall, I also held my first solo exhibition at an art museum in the heart of the city. I called it "An Outsider's Mistake". At the very end of the exhibition stood a massive white wall. Projected across it were the final words: "When someone is repeatedly cut out of the frame, they shouldn't lower themselves and beg to be let back in. They should walk away and take back the camera that was

Evelyn didn't leave the city right away. Instead, she found a budget hotel near the documentary team's base and checked in.For the next several days, she showed up at the filming site like clockwork. She was doing exactly what I used to do. Quietly, she helped the crew carry heavy tripods, gathered loose cables, and bought ice-cold water for everyone. Then she'd stand silently outside the frame and watch me work. She was trying to show me she had changed. That she was willing to do all those thankless little things for me now, too. But I never gave her a second chance. I treated her like any other production assistant—polite, professional, and distant. Sometimes, I'd even offer her a courteous, "Thank you."That simple politeness hurt her more than anger or insults ever could. Two weeks later, the team was preparing to move on to another province. The evening before we left, Evelyn finally couldn't hold it back anymore. She stopped me just as I was about to get into the van

Backstage after the documentary premiere, the halls buzzed with excitement.Evelyn stood at the end of the corridor, watching me surrounded by my new colleagues as we talked excitedly about the screening. She waited until everyone had finally gone their separate ways before working up the courage to approach me. "Evan."I stopped. When I turned and saw her, my expression remained calm and unreadable, as though I were looking at a stranger. "Did you need something?" Evelyn's throat tightened. She pulled out her tablet and held it out to me. "I re-edited our graduation video." I took the tablet. In the new version, she'd restored every scene of me that had been cut—the smiles buried in the discarded footage, carefully pieced back together frame by frame. She had even changed the title from "The Friendship We Shared" to "The Friendship We Shared, All Five of Us".She looked at me desperately, like a child who knew she'd done something wrong and was hoping for one last chance to

The copyright dispute continued to snowball. Brands that had once been eager to work with Daniel began terminating their partnerships one after another. Some even sent him formal legal notices. Unable to withstand the mounting pressure, Daniel finally posted an apology on his account. But even then, he carefully avoided taking any real responsibility. "Due to a lack of communication, I failed to consider my friend's feelings, which led to this misunderstanding. Our friendship belongs to all of us. I hope we can find our way back to the way things were."When Evelyn saw the post, she went straight to Daniel's studio. "You're doing it wrong. Delete it." She stared him down, her expression cold. "State clearly that Evan was the sole cinematographer and writer of the project." Daniel gritted his teeth, staring at her in disbelief. "Evelyn, even if you back me into a corner like this, is Evan really going to come back? Have you forgotten? He blocked you everywhere." Evelyn fell s

Evelyn didn't even have time to worry about losing her graduate project recommendation. She locked herself inside the empty studio and opened the complete backup of the folder titled "An Outsider's Mistake", which contained four gigabytes of discarded footage. She clicked through the files one by one. Only then did she realize that every scene they'd cut contained something I'd once given them without hesitation. During their freshman year, she twisted her ankle on the stairs in the middle of winter. In the footage, I was carrying a heavy load of camera equipment on my back while supporting her with one arm as she limped beside me. By the time we reached the hospital, I was practically out of breath. Sophomore year, she was preparing for an interview for a study-abroad exchange program. In the corner of the frame, I sat with dark circles under my eyes after staying up for two straight nights to help her rehearse mock interview questions. My voice was hoarse with exhaustion, but

Only then did Evelyn see my breakup message. She stood there for a moment, stunned. Then she backed out of the chat and tried calling me. "I'm sorry, the number you dialed is currently unavailable."She frowned as the realization sank in. A flicker of irritation rose in her chest, but she quickly pushed it aside. "He's playing hard to get again," she said with a cold laugh. "Whatever. I'll give him a couple of days. Once he cools down, he'll realize how ridiculous this is." For the past four years, I'd never truly walked away from her. One Valentine's Day, she'd left me waiting alone at a restaurant because Daniel had gotten drunk after a breakup and needed her. I'd waited for her in the cold for three hours. The next day, all it had taken was a cup of coffee for me to forgive her. So Evelyn was certain this time would be no different. She was confident that I'd come crawling back eventually, just like I always had, and wait for her to make things right. But three full day
