Chapter 3

Existence
At eight the next evening, Daniel's celebratory livestream began. Behind them, a backdrop displayed a bold slogan. "Four People. Ten Years. A Friendship That Will Never Fade."

The four friends, Evelyn, Daniel, Claire Bennett, and Adrian Calloway, sat side by side in front of the camera. I was the only one missing from the set.

At first, Evelyn glanced toward the off-camera area, looking for me. She probably assumed I was running late because I was still upset. But once the livestream passed 100,000 viewers, she quickly forgot all about me.

The brand had poured a huge amount of money into the livestream. Then, right there on the spot, they announced that they were willing to fund a custom short film documenting their friendship.

The moment the announcement ended, the livestream comments suddenly went silent. Then, one after another, a wave of stunned messages flooded the screen.

"Wait, where did all the videos on your profile go?"

"The platform says they've been taken down because of a serious copyright dispute!"

"Everyone, go look! The original creator just posted a statement! Daniel Whitmore wasn't the one who filmed them!"

The mood in the livestream shifted instantly.

At the same time, I posted a statement on my own account.

"Creator's Proof of Ownership: Evan Mercer was the original camera operator for 90% of the footage used in 'The Friendship We Shared,' and he also wrote all of the narration."

I attached timestamps documenting the exact dates and times each scene was filmed, along with dozens of drafts showing the revisions I'd made to the narration.

The moment the brand saw my statement, they posted a message in the livestream. "Due to potential copyright issues, all future collaboration is suspended."

Daniel's face went pale, and the livestream ended abruptly.

My phone was immediately flooded with calls from all four of them. I answered Evelyn's call. Her voice came through, barely containing her anger. "Evan, have you lost your mind? Do you have any idea what this is going to do to Daniel's career?"

I could hear Daniel's furious breathing in the background.

Claire was yelling too. "Evan, are you seriously that bitter? All they did was leave your name out! Did you really have to make such a huge deal out of it?"

As they accused me as if they had every right to, I suddenly laughed. "Why does his career have to be built on my work?"

Evelyn fell silent for a moment before snapping back, teeth clenched. "You're just jealous because people are shipping me and Daniel, aren't you? Evan, can you stop being so childish?"

I tightened my grip on the phone, raging with anger. So for the first and last time, I made myself clear.

"Evelyn, you've got it wrong. I've never cared about people shipping the two of you. What I care about is the fact that you call me an outsider and erase me from everything you've built… Then you turn around and use everything I've poured into it to make money without giving it a second thought."

With that, I hung up.

After that incident, the four of them decided to reshoot the footage, hoping to win the brand back. They wanted to prove to the entire world that they could still tell the perfect story of their friendship without me.

The problem was, they didn't even know how to adjust the white balance on a DSLR, understand depth of field, or put together a proper shot list. They were used to simply standing in front of the camera, striking a pose, and waiting for me to count, "One, two, three."

Even so, they rushed the replacement video online. The lighting was dim, the transitions were clumsy, and the whole thing looked painfully amateurish.

The internet noticed immediately, and the comments were filled with ridicule.

"You can totally tell this was staged. This doesn't even come close to the last video."

But the biggest problem came when Daniel decided to take a shortcut. He reused a storyboard I'd once shared in their group chat, one that had never been made public. Once viewers dug it up and exposed him, Daniel was hit with another wave of plagiarism accusations.

Three years after graduation, I officially became a partner at a documentary studio and began independently directing and filming projects that were truly my own. My name started appearing regularly on nomination lists at major film festivals. Whenever my new team took a group photo, everyone made sure to leave a spot for me right in the center. This time, someone else was always behind the camera, pointing it at me. I was no longer the shadow standing behind the lens, documenting other people's friendships while never having a place in the frame—or even my own name attached to the story. That fall, I also held my first solo exhibition at an art museum in the heart of the city. I called it "An Outsider's Mistake". At the very end of the exhibition stood a massive white wall. Projected across it were the final words: "When someone is repeatedly cut out of the frame, they shouldn't lower themselves and beg to be let back in. They should walk away and take back the camera that was

Evelyn didn't leave the city right away. Instead, she found a budget hotel near the documentary team's base and checked in.For the next several days, she showed up at the filming site like clockwork. She was doing exactly what I used to do. Quietly, she helped the crew carry heavy tripods, gathered loose cables, and bought ice-cold water for everyone. Then she'd stand silently outside the frame and watch me work. She was trying to show me she had changed. That she was willing to do all those thankless little things for me now, too. But I never gave her a second chance. I treated her like any other production assistant—polite, professional, and distant. Sometimes, I'd even offer her a courteous, "Thank you."That simple politeness hurt her more than anger or insults ever could. Two weeks later, the team was preparing to move on to another province. The evening before we left, Evelyn finally couldn't hold it back anymore. She stopped me just as I was about to get into the van

Backstage after the documentary premiere, the halls buzzed with excitement.Evelyn stood at the end of the corridor, watching me surrounded by my new colleagues as we talked excitedly about the screening. She waited until everyone had finally gone their separate ways before working up the courage to approach me. "Evan."I stopped. When I turned and saw her, my expression remained calm and unreadable, as though I were looking at a stranger. "Did you need something?" Evelyn's throat tightened. She pulled out her tablet and held it out to me. "I re-edited our graduation video." I took the tablet. In the new version, she'd restored every scene of me that had been cut—the smiles buried in the discarded footage, carefully pieced back together frame by frame. She had even changed the title from "The Friendship We Shared" to "The Friendship We Shared, All Five of Us".She looked at me desperately, like a child who knew she'd done something wrong and was hoping for one last chance to

The copyright dispute continued to snowball. Brands that had once been eager to work with Daniel began terminating their partnerships one after another. Some even sent him formal legal notices. Unable to withstand the mounting pressure, Daniel finally posted an apology on his account. But even then, he carefully avoided taking any real responsibility. "Due to a lack of communication, I failed to consider my friend's feelings, which led to this misunderstanding. Our friendship belongs to all of us. I hope we can find our way back to the way things were."When Evelyn saw the post, she went straight to Daniel's studio. "You're doing it wrong. Delete it." She stared him down, her expression cold. "State clearly that Evan was the sole cinematographer and writer of the project." Daniel gritted his teeth, staring at her in disbelief. "Evelyn, even if you back me into a corner like this, is Evan really going to come back? Have you forgotten? He blocked you everywhere." Evelyn fell s

Evelyn didn't even have time to worry about losing her graduate project recommendation. She locked herself inside the empty studio and opened the complete backup of the folder titled "An Outsider's Mistake", which contained four gigabytes of discarded footage. She clicked through the files one by one. Only then did she realize that every scene they'd cut contained something I'd once given them without hesitation. During their freshman year, she twisted her ankle on the stairs in the middle of winter. In the footage, I was carrying a heavy load of camera equipment on my back while supporting her with one arm as she limped beside me. By the time we reached the hospital, I was practically out of breath. Sophomore year, she was preparing for an interview for a study-abroad exchange program. In the corner of the frame, I sat with dark circles under my eyes after staying up for two straight nights to help her rehearse mock interview questions. My voice was hoarse with exhaustion, but

Only then did Evelyn see my breakup message. She stood there for a moment, stunned. Then she backed out of the chat and tried calling me. "I'm sorry, the number you dialed is currently unavailable."She frowned as the realization sank in. A flicker of irritation rose in her chest, but she quickly pushed it aside. "He's playing hard to get again," she said with a cold laugh. "Whatever. I'll give him a couple of days. Once he cools down, he'll realize how ridiculous this is." For the past four years, I'd never truly walked away from her. One Valentine's Day, she'd left me waiting alone at a restaurant because Daniel had gotten drunk after a breakup and needed her. I'd waited for her in the cold for three hours. The next day, all it had taken was a cup of coffee for me to forgive her. So Evelyn was certain this time would be no different. She was confident that I'd come crawling back eventually, just like I always had, and wait for her to make things right. But three full day
