The heat inside the oven surged from every direction. Everything was scorching hot, as if on fire.

I pounded desperately on the glass door in front of me until my hands turned red.

"Daddy! I learned my lesson! Save me! It's too hot! I want to get out!" I screamed, sobbing.

My skin accidentally brushed against the metal wall, and the sharp sting made me pull back instantly.

Dustin Decker leaned close to the oven and said smugly, "That's what you get for always bragging about your dad at school. Well, he doesn't want you anymore. From now on, he's only buying toys for me, and he's only going to love me."

"No! He's my daddy!" I cried so hard my voice went hoarse.

Sweat and tears dripped onto the floor of the oven, sizzling and evaporating in an instant.

Dustin gave me a nasty grin, then turned and ran out of the kitchen.

I heard him talking to my dad, Peter Johnson, in the hallway.

"Daddy, Julian is inside the oven talking bad about you. He said if you don't let him out, he's going to find Larry Patterson, the bakery owner, and make him his new dad!"

"No! I didn't say that. Daddy, don't believe him!" I cried out.

But a second later, I heard my dad answer angrily, "He can stay in there as long as he wants! He's been spoiled rotten, and that's why he has such an awful temper. Come on, Dustin, I'll take you to buy some new toys."

The front door slammed shut with a heavy bang, leaving behind only the low hum of the oven.

The heat was suffocating; my hands and feet throbbed with pain.

The gold cross necklace around my neck began to scorch my skin. It was a gift from my parents. Daddy used to tell me that as long as I wore it, I would always be safe and sound.

It was burning hot. I wanted to take it off, but I hesitated.

I simply couldn't take it off. It was my fault Mommy and Daddy got separated in the first place. If I took it off, Daddy would be even madder at me.

I curled up into a ball, my head feeling light and dizzy.

"Daddy, why aren't you coming to save me? Daddy, do you really not want me anymore? I miss you so much."

I curled up in agony as consciousness slowly slipped away from me.

"Daddy, I'll be good from now on," I mumbled.

When I opened my eyes again, I was floating weightlessly in the living room.

The big oven in the kitchen was quiet now, its glass door smudged with dirty little handprints.

I hovered closer and peered inside. A small, dark figure was huddled motionless at the bottom.

Was that me?

Just then, Dustin's excited voice rang out from the bedroom.

"Daddy, is this big room going to be mine now? Can I play with all these action figures on the shelf?"

Daddy glanced reflexively toward the kitchen, his forehead creasing slightly. But it lasted only a fraction of a second before he turned back to Dustin with the same warm smile he used to give me.

"Of course. Everything in this house is yours now. Just tell me whatever you want."

Dustin smirked triumphantly, then instantly switched to a look of concern.

"But what about Julian? Won't he be mad at me?"

Daddy's smile stiffened, then gave way to disgust a heartbeat later. He scoffed. "What right does he have to be mad? Not only did he refuse to come out of the oven, but now he's throwing a tantrum in there. Dustin, are you hungry? I bought some delicious food for you."

Daddy led Dustin to the dining table. They sat down together, chatting and laughing.

Not once did either of them look toward the kitchen to check the oven.

The table was covered with hot pizza and all sorts of expensive treats. But my eyes were drawn straight to the strawberry cake sitting at the edge of the table.

That was my absolute favorite. Daddy used to buy it for me all the time.

A tiny flicker of hope stirred in my chest.

Did Daddy buy the strawberry cake for me? Did that mean he wasn't angry anymore?

Just then, Dustin took a huge bite of pizza and spotted the strawberry cake too.

"We found a set of clear fingerprints on the oven's power dial. After testing them against our database, we confirmed they belong to Dustin," the officer said grimly. He had brought a killer into his own home, and now I was dead because of it.Grandma drew in a sharp breath, staring in absolute shock at Dustin, who was still lying in the hospital bed looking like a helpless angel. "I brought a monster into our house, and he killed Julian," Daddy murmured, turning slowly toward Dustin. A devastating storm of rage, disbelief, and suffocating guilt churned in his eyes. "Why? Why did you kill Julian?"Dustin shrank back under Daddy's terrifying gaze and retorted in his childish voice, "You were the one who said Julian and his mommy both deserved to die. I was only trying to help you."As he went on, a wave of selfish indignation rose inside him, his voice pitching higher. "Besides, I had no idea turning it on would kill hi

That sentence fell like a thunderbolt, pinning everyone in place. Only then did Mommy realize there was a strange little boy in the house. Her eyes drifted down to the toy in Dustin's hand—it was my favorite toy. Then, her gaze shifted back to the charred remains inside the oven. Understanding dawned on her in a flash. Her eyes flared with fury as she rounded on Daddy. "I know I was wrong for cheating on you, but Julian is your son! How could you take your hatred for me out on him?"She pointed a trembling finger at Daddy. "How could you be so cruel? What kind of monster locks a child that small inside an oven?"Stung by her words, Daddy shot to his feet, hysterically shouting back, "Oh, so now you care about Julian? Did you ever think about him when you were cheating on me? All those cakes you brought home for him were just an excuse so you could sneak off with your lover, weren't they?"I curled up in the corner, staring blankly at the chaos unfolding before me."That's en

"No… this can't be happening…" Daddy stared fixedly at the charred, blackened remains at his feet. "Wasn't Julian just sulking and giving me the silent treatment?" he said with trembling lips. "This can't be him!"Daddy suddenly went wild, frantically searching the house like a man possessed. He yanked back the living room curtains, then threw open the wardrobe doors."Julian, stop messing around! Come out right now! You think I don't know this is one of your pranks? Who are you trying to scare with a fake prop like this?"The female officer looked at the unraveling man with pity in her eyes. "Mr. Johnson, we've searched every inch of this house. Julian is nowhere to be found."Daddy's voice faltered. Then, choking back tears, he said, "Julian, if you come out right now, I'll forgive you and take you to get strawberry c

The door swung open, revealing two police officers standing beside Mommy, whom I hadn't seen in a long time.Mommy's face was ashen. The moment she saw Daddy, she stormed inside and confronted him."Peter, what nonsense have you been spouting in the parents' group chat? The kindergarten told me Julian hasn't been to school in days! What have you done with him?"Seeing Mommy ignited every ounce of resentment Daddy had bottled up inside. "Charlotte, you've got some nerve bringing the police to my house!" he spat. "You two heartless wretches are teaming up to make a fool of me, aren't you?"The lead officer cut Daddy off."Mr. Johnson, we need to ask you a few questions regarding Julian's disappearance. When was the last time you saw him?" he asked sternly.Daddy suddenly charged toward the kitchen, yelling at the top of his lungs, "Julian, haven't you caused enough trouble? Get out here right now! I want to see just how long he can—"Daddy abruptly stopped mid-sentence.He caught the stench, too, his gaze locking instantly onto the large oven.A trickle of murky, viscous yellow liquid was seeping out from under the oven door. It was the putrid fluid from my decomposing body.I thought Daddy would panic, or at least figure out something was terribly wrong. But he didn't.Instead, he was stunned for just a second before his face twisted with pure fury. Trembling with rage, he pointed at the stain and snapped, "Julian Johnson!"Julian Johnson, I told you to stay in there and think about what you did, and you actually relieved yourself in there just to disgust me? How can you be so vile and shameless?"No, Daddy, it wasn't like that.I circled around him frantically, trying to explain that I hadn't tried to disgust him—I was just dea
