ROBYN

“Let’s talk in my office.” Spade went instantly into full boss mode; the arrogant and callous president and CEO walked away in a confident stride.

Seeing him in his simple jeans and dark shirt surprised me. And nothing could beat a barefooted man so domesticated.

I followed suit. His office was just around the corner. As he flicked the lights on and widened the door, the elegant room came into view. It was smaller compared to the main office in his building.

A black gooseneck lamp, a laptop on his black, thick desk set at the center with a dark leather chair. A single shelf with unique art pieces and a photo frame of him and Mister Lex Kross. And then a black leather couch in the corner.

“Are you gonna sit down or judge my home office?”

I swallowed hard and went to the couch to sit. “Thank you.”

“That’s the first time you said thank you since you woke up.”

“I believe I said thanksfor the breakfast.” I grasped my hands together as they started to shake.

“What do you reme

ROBYNI bit back the curse, fighting the urge to stop him and listen more to his poor excuses. I felt like he was still holding something back, and I wanted to open his layers and find out. I knew it would be challenging, but I started to care about him. Despite his triggering darker nature, I knew there was good within him. There was that light still engulfed in darkness. But I was still horror-struck by his confession. “Agh!” I dropped myself on the couch and curled up. “It’s already late. You’re tired, and I’m tired.” Piper yawned. That was the third time in a row. “I’ll keep the door open when you decide to sleep in my room. It’s more comfortable in bed, babe.”“Thanks, Pip.” I raised my hand, waving. “Turn off the light on your way. Love you.”“Love you, too. Good night.”Groaning, I punched the pillow and lay down. I wrapped my body with the blanket, trying to sleep, but my mind was still wide awake. “What the hell am I doing?” I threw the blanket away and grabbed my phone.

SPADEMax just laughed as the elevator brought us back up to Piper’s apartment floor. “So what are you gonna say? Are you going to tell her everything that you lied to her? But in her defense, you’re actually obsessed with her, not just in a creepy way.”“And you’re still talking.” I stepped out first, fixing my jacket, and then I took a deep breath. The walk to the apartment door took time than I left earlier. And I felt suddenly nervous.“You can do it, bro.”“Easy for you to say.”“Then next time just tell her what you feel. Stop making stories. The key to a successful relationship is trust, open and honest communication, and you have to be willing to sacrifice and compromise, and most importantly, respect.”“All right, Erik Erikson.” I exhaled and knocked on the door. “Robyn, it’s me.” I waited and counted to ten. Nada. I knocked louder this time. “Robyn, open the door, please? All I need is two minutes. Then I’m going home.”Nada. Ziltch. Then I heard something knock off. Max and

SPADE“That’s it?” Max stared at me in disappointment. “She said she needs time.” I ignored his gaze following me as I walked towards the elevator. “Why are you even questioning my decision?”“Because lately, you’re—” He shrugged. “I don’t know, man. I know there’s a huge part of you that still blames yourself for what Reid did to her, but he’s gonna be locked up for a long time. If you do something stupid like pushing your wife away, you just let Reid win because that’s what he wanted from the very start. He’d ruined your life for years. Don’t let him get into your head. You have to forgive yourself one way or another, that it wasn’t your fault.”9“That’s precisely my fault. I should have known he’d be released early. And she was attacked because I was involved with her. He chose her because he knew Robyn was my weakness.”He snorted, grabbing me by the arm. “So this is what it’s all about. “You’re pushing her way because she made you vulnerable. Man, it’s been years. You should mo

SPADE “Watching her lying on the floor, unconscious, with blood on her head. I thought she was dead. And I froze. All I could think was losing her without telling her how much she meant to me because I trusted the people around her to protect her. As her husband, I failed her miserably.”“You didn’t fail, son. What happened was not your fault. Don’t blame yourself for everything that happened with the people around you. Robyn did not even blame you. And you couldn’t have known he was out and ready to commit another crime.”“That’s it, because I wasn’t too vigilant. For the past weeks, she’d been abducted, and now she nearly got a cracked skull. No matter how I tried to protect her, she still got hurt.”“So, hurting her would accomplish you what exactly?” Max shrugged.I scowled at Max.“Do you think telling her lies would keep her safe?” Lex’s eyes narrowed at me.“Or maybe if she stays away from you, it would make her safe?” Max looked more confused, shifting his gaze between me and

SPADE“I really don’t understand you. Why the fuck did you do that? Why did you lie to her?” Max glared at me and then blinked. He just matched my anger. “I can’t believe you fucked it up, man.”I opened my mouth to explain, but Lex just walked into the living room. After our short pleasantries, he looked at me and Max. He instantly sensed a tension between us. Max looked away, and I remained silent. “Don’t stop on my account.” He sat down and took his tea from Max. “Your son is insane, Mr. Kross. He just lost it. Big time.” Max had met Lex many times, just right after he took me in. He liked Max. He was the one who found him and where he was deployed. “What did you do, Spade?” Still calm, he crossed his leg over the other, sipping his tea. He then looked at me, waiting for my reply. “What kind of tea is this? It’s subtle.”“And doesn’t taste like a concoction? Just a regular tea.”“Don’t change the subject, son. What did you do? And don’t lie to me. I can see it in your eyes. You’

ROBYNI shook my head, still puzzled. “No. Never. I never saw their faces, but they managed to describe my princess costume and the boy who ghosted me.”“Huh. I think he’d been into you since you were young.”I looked right into her eyes. “That’s the thing.” I swallowed hard. “He admitted it, too. Tonight. He said he’d been stalking me, and I didn’t know anything about it.”“Well, that’s creepy.” Horror filled her eyes as she rubbed her arms. “Did he tell you why?”I nodded. “He said he’s been obsessed with me.”“No, no, no,” she disagreed. “From what I’ve heard, he’d been traumatized as a kid because of his parents. How could he have the time to stalk you? I think he’s trying to scare you. So he made up stories to test you. Yes, maybe he has post-traumatic stress syndrome or something, but that doesn’t make him a creepy stalker. Of course, you would feel it if someone were watching you. Have you?”“No. I have no clue. I was completely oblivious. But why would he lie to me? I even be
