“House of Shadows”

Elisa

The morning light was creeping in through the curtains when I stirred, my eyes burned from lack of sleep, but my body refused to rest.

I had tried closing my eyes on the couch in Bianca's room, but the image of Antonio collapsing in the doorway, bleeding and breathless, haunted me.

The silence in Bianca’s room felt like a weighted blanket, warm, but stifling. I hadn't said much in the past few hours, and neither had she.

We both knew why, it's been two days since Antonio had almost died, and I hadn’t let myself process that yet.

He was resting now, or at least he had been the last time I checked, when I left our hidden room earlier. His breathing was shallow but steady.

Bianca had urged me to take a break, to eat something, to clear my head, but I wasn't able to taste the coffee she made.

I couldn't, not with the image of Antonio, pale and bleeding, collapsing into my arms still playing on loop in my mind.

I left Bianca's room quietly, not wanting to expl

The BetrayalElisa Today I longed for a moment of quiet, a breath of fresh air, but it never came, the estate now felt like a cage. My stomach churned with uneasiness, a mix of the growing life within me and the growing fear around me.I was in Antonio's study, trying to distract myself with some of De Luca family old books, but my mind kept drifting, I was restless and jumpy, the guards stood by the door, silent as ever, their presence a heavy weight. I looked up at the clock on the wall, Antonio should have been back from his meeting by now, I felt a pang of worry and longing. He was always so careful to keep me informed of his movements, especially now.Just then, a young maid, new to the estate, arrived at the door. Her name was Sofia, and she had large, innocent eyes. She curtsied deeply to me and the guards, her movements practiced and smooth."Signora Elisa," she said, her voice soft and deferential, almost a whisper. "Don Antonio sent for you, he is waiting for you at the

False ComfortElisaPyotr's call had left Antonio in a state of emergency, the knowledge that he knew about the baby, that he had spies so close, had shaken Antonio. The world suddenly felt even more dangerous, he became more protective than ever, his concern for my safety bordering on obsessive. The change in our lives was immediate, Antonio drastically increased security around me, it wasn't just the subtle precautions we had already been taking. It was now a full-scale lockdown, I didn't know how he pulled that without revealing too much. I was no longer allowed to move freely within the estate, I had a constant escort, two guards, always with me, day and night. They were polite and professional, but their presence was a constant reminder of the threat. The gardens, where I could go to have a quiet time before , were now off-limits, I was confined to the main house, and even there, my movements were restricted. I could no longer visit the library alone, or walk through the hall

Eyes EverywhereAntonio The tension in the estate was a physical thing, a hum beneath the surface of everyday life. I had spent the past few days watching Elisa closely. Her movements were more cautious, her eyes constantly scanning the familiar faces of our staff. I noticed her subtle efforts to hide her changing body, the way she sometimes pressed a hand to her stomach when she thought no one was looking. It hurt me to see her like this, living under the weight of a secret that should have brought only joy, my anger at the traitors in our midst grew with each passing hour. I wanted to move, to strike, but I held back, remembering my own promise to myself, patience. We needed to know who was working against us, who was feeding information outside our walls.I was in my office, reviewing the latest reports from the city, particularly focusing on the movements of Bianchi's and Belgrado's men. The air was thick with the scent of old paper and the faint smell of the flowers outsi

The Unraveling ThreadElisa The past few months felt like living under a magnifying glass. Since I told Antonio about the baby, a new kind of vigilance had settled over me. We spoke in hushed tones, planned every move, trying to build an invisible shield around our secret. Antonio was more protective than ever, constantly reminding me about taking care of myself, and about monitoring every change in my routine and appearance, I tried my best. I started wearing looser clothes, avoided certain parts of the estate, and stopped my usual vigorous sparring sessions, blaming it on a lingering strain from the recent sparring section. It was a constant performance, and the effort was draining. But despite our efforts, a cold, persistent feeling began to creep into my days, I got the distinct feeling someone was watching me more closely. It wasn't just the general paranoia of knowing there were traitors in the household. This felt personal, specific to me, it was in the subtle shift in th

New FearsElisaThe drive back to the estate after the mission was quiet. The car moved smoothly through the predawn darkness. Antonio was focused on the road, but I could feel his gaze on me sometimes. His question, "Are you okay, Elisa? You look tired," echoed in my mind. I had brushed it off, as always, but I knew, I knew why I was tired. I had known for a day now, hence why I spent the night at Bianca's room the other day, and the secret had weighed heavily on me.My mind replayed the night's event, the crack of gunfire, the rush of adrenaline, the cold satisfaction of taking back what was ours. Antonio had been a force, moving with ruthless grace. I had fought beside him, feeling the familiar burn of exertion, the quick thinking needed in a gunfight, but unlike before, a new layer of worry had clung to me. Every near miss, every enemy who got too close, sent a shiver down my spine that wasn't just fear for myself, it was fear for someone else.We arrived back at the estate an

Taking Back PossessionsAntonio The air in the secret passage was cool and damp, it smelled of old earth and stone. Elisa moved ahead of me, her silhouette barely visible in the faint light that filtered from the hidden exit. We walked in silence, the only sound was the soft padding of our shoes on the rough floor. My mind was sharp, ready for the night ahead. The anger I felt towards Elisa earlier was gone, replaced by the focus required for a mission, and a fierce determination to protect her.We emerged from the passageway and entered the carb that was waiting for us. It took us to an abandoned warehouse on the edge of downtown Sicily. The city hummed in the distance, a low, constant murmur that always seemed to whisper of secrets and danger. The air here was cool and smelled of exhaust fumes and damp concrete.Matteo and the rest of the crew were already there, waiting. Twenty men, quiet and grim, dressed in dark clothing. Their faces were shadowed, but their eyes were alert,
