Chapter 3

Author: Dolius
"Leah being a widow is the best outcome."

He twisted open the backup oxygen bottle and directed it at the nearby flames.

The compressed pure oxygen caused the flames to erupt, reaching a height taller than an adult.

"So, I'm burning up this oxygen instead of giving it to you!"

I instinctively tried to crawl over and breathe in the small amount of oxygen leaking out, but it was impossible.

Roderick laughed, lowering his body to get closer to me.

"The fire is about to reach the load-bearing wall. Once that happens, this place will collapse completely. No one will be able to save you."

He took out an army knife and slashed my arm harshly.

"Tomorrow morning, we'll hold a moment of silence for you."

Blood immediately poured out from the wound.

In a fit of extreme anger, I mustered all my strength and slammed my head into Roderick's knee.

The taste of blood in my throat was frightening, but it brought me a sense of madness.

"Roderick, you're committing murder!"

My voice was hoarse and filled with anguish.

Hearing the commotion, Leah and the others rushed back and held me down tightly.

Roderick, who was helped up by them, pointed at the knife on the ground in panic.

"I just wanted to help him cut the wire tangled around his leg, but he lunged at me with the knife. He said the blood would bring more trouble and that we'd all die here!"

It was a complete distortion of the truth, and I wanted nothing more than to tear Roderick's mouth apart!

Leah, holding Roderick, kicked me angrily.

"Cedric! Are you even human? Just because I wouldn't let you, a senior member, abuse your privileges, you want to get us all killed? Roderick even tried to help you, but you don't deserve it!"

I forced a few broken words from my throat. "It wasn't…"

Before I could finish, Leah interrupted me with an expression of disgust.

"The one who should die in this fire is someone like you!"

Her vicious words pierced through my heart.

A teammate spat on me.

"We thought you were just jealous because Captain Sawyer favors Roderick. But you're really malicious enough to try to kill all of us. How unlucky we are to meet someone like you!"

They were once my teammates who had fought alongside me. I used to trust them with my life, and now, not a single one of them would show me any trust.

I let out a muffled sob and struggled to move my arm, which was still bleeding heavily, trying to make them see that I was the one injured, not Roderick.

None of them saw it, or maybe they simply chose not to.

They were all comforting Roderick.

"Don't be afraid, we're here for you."

"When this mission ends, we'll go and report him."

"We can't just report him. He should be sent to a military tribunal!"

Leah scoffed. "Let's see if he even makes it out of here alive."

Their words, sharp and cutting, left my heart in pieces.

The prefabricated ceiling above me began to crack, and dust started to fall.

I knew the building would collapse soon.

But I kept bleeding, and my consciousness grew fainter and fainter.

Roderick's gaze was full of malice, while Leah's was icy.

"Cedric, don't blame me. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for not knowing when to back off."

I completely gave up as I lay helpless on the searing ground, waiting for death. The final breath in my lungs was squeezed out, and the suffocating pain caused my body to convulse.

Just as I was about to lose consciousness, a loud, wind-like sound ripped through the air.

With a bang, the wall beside me was shattered by a tremendous force from the outside.

Several fully armored figures rushed in. Their fire suits were different from ours and were more advanced and heavier.

The leader acted quickly, locking onto my position immediately.

"Target spotted! His vital signs are weak. Commence immediate rescue!"

"Now, everyone, run ten laps around the field to warm up!"The recruits paused for a second, then erupted into thunderous applause.Watching Queenie with her face shining under the sunlight, my heart that had long been frozen began to thaw little by little. With her here, everything didn't seem as difficult anymore.…Queenie's arrival breathed new life into the dull academy. She was both professional and witty, and the recruits quickly bonded with her. Here, she explained emergency first-aid and battlefield psychology in the simplest, most understandable way. While I was teaching, she would stand by quietly, handing me water when my throat went dry, or steadying me when I wobbled due to the pain in my leg. With her help, my teaching went smoother. We worked more in sync with each passing day. Sometimes a single look was enough for us to understand each other. Our other coworkers at the academy joked that we were like a perfect couple. I just smiled, neither denying nor conf

Queenie was right. Why was I so focused on being negative about things? In another way, I could still make a difference in the career I loved.I looked at her and nodded seriously."Feeling better?" She grinned, her smile like the warm sunshine."Good. Let's go for a walk. The weather's nice today. I'll push you outside."That afternoon, she wheeled me around the hospital gardens for a long time. We talked about a lot of things.I learned that her grandfather had been a firefighter too, and he had died during a rescue mission. That was why she became a doctor and had such a deep concern for everything related to firefighting."I joined the rescue team because of you," she suddenly said.I was taken aback."I saw your story about how you were betrayed by your wife and nearly died in the fire. I wanted to see for myself what kind of man you are."She made a face. "Now, it seems you're not all that great. You're just a fool."Her words made me laugh, and it was the first tim

At the end of the letter, Leah begged for my forgiveness, asking me to visit her once.I finished reading it with a vacant expression, then tore it into shreds in front of Queenie.Forgive her?She nearly got me killed under her so-called "value maximization", and now she wanted me to forgive her? What a joke.Queenie watched me tear up the letter, saying nothing. She silently collected the scraps and tossed them in the trash. She muttered, "Good call. Some people aren't worth forgiving."I looked at her, a warm feeling rising in my chest. She always seemed to understand what I was thinking."Don't look at me like that. I just feel sorry for you," she said, slightly flustered, her ears reddening. I smiled and wrote on the board. "You don't have to anymore."Because I had her now.I didn't write that, but it was tucked away in my heart.…The trial for Leah and Roderick began soon after. With the irrefutable evidence and the severe public backlash, the court delivered it

Leah and Roderick's faces kept flashing before me, their mocking and indifferent expressions stabbing deep into my heart. It was Queenie's voice that pulled me out of the nightmare."Wake up, Cedric. It's time for your dressing change."I opened my eyes and met her clear gaze.Sunlight filtered through the window, casting a soft glow around her.She was carefully unwrapping the bandages on my leg, tending to the gruesome wounds. Her movements were professional and gentle, but the pain still made me grunt in discomfort."It's normal to feel pain, as it means your nerves are still working," she said without looking up.I reached for the writing board. "Thank you."I had written these two words more times than I could count.During my time in the hospital, she had handled nearly all of my treatment. Not only that, but she would also chat with me about trivial things, distracting me from my pain and easing my anxiety. She was like a ray of light, shining through my world, which

"But two unauthorized persons came into the ward, disturbed my patient, and even threatened to have me kicked out."There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, and then the hospital director's voice became sharply cold."Who's that? Put them on the line."Joshua Wyndham, Roderick's father, seemed to recognize the voice of the director. His expression shifted slightly, but he tried to hold his composure."Director Burke, it's me, Joshua Wyndham. We just have a small misunderstanding.""Misunderstanding?" The director's voice simmered with restrained anger. "My doctor is being threatened by your people in my hospital. You're calling this a misunderstanding? Besides, I also heard that you're harassing a heroic firefighter?"Joshua's forehead was beaded with sweat."Director Burke, let me explain…""I don't want to hear your explanation!" Hector Burke interrupted him."I'm giving you ten minutes. Get out of my hospital now, or we'll report you to the cops for disruptio

Two investigators immediately stepped forward and dragged Roderick out.Leah continued her last-ditch effort."Cedric, listen to me! Roderick's father is a businessman who's about to donate a large sum to our fire department. I just wanted to get along with his son. I was doing this for the future of the team!"How laughable. For her so-called "future", she was willing to sacrifice me.I didn't look at her. Instead, I wrote the final line on the board and handed it to Fabian."I request a criminal lawsuit against Leah."Leah read the words before utterly breaking down and collapsing to the floor."No, Cedric, you can't be so heartless…"Fabian took the board and nodded solemnly."I understand."He glanced at the nearby investigators."Take her away and start the formal investigation."Leah was forcibly dragged out, and her desperate cries echoed down the hall, fading as she was led away. The room finally fell silent.I stared at the ceiling, the anger and despair in my c
