Luna stood in a shadowy place where the ground was cracked and barren. The wind slapped past her face. It was cold-and whispered some things that Luna could not comprehend.

"Alec!" she yelled, the echo of her voice lost in the depths of nowhere.

"I am here." The tone was very low and resigned. She turned to see him sitting languidly on a stone, his face in his hands.

"Alec, what's the matter?" she asked as she hurried toward him.

He did not look at her. "You should not be here, Luna. This… this is my burden."

"What burden?" she insisted, kneeling in front of him.

Alec finally raised his head, revealing the despair in his eyes. "The truth. About why I joined this pack. About why I stayed."

Luna frowned, perplexed. "You are part of our family, Alec. Why would you not stay?"

"Because I was not supposed to be here," he spat bitterly. "I was sent to spy on you."

The words landed on Luna like a punch in the gut. "What?"
