The living room echoed with laughter.

Kelsey had just tagged Keira, who squealed and bolted behind the armchair. Kelvin ducked under the table, giggling, his small shoulders shaking with joy. Georgia smiled faintly from the kitchen doorway, watching her children run free for the first time in what felt like forever.

“Not the vase!” Georgia called out as Keira’s foot knocked against the side table.

“Sorry, Mommy!” Keira gasped, steadying it with both hands before running again. “I’m the hide-and-seek queen!”

“No, you’re not!” Kelvin shouted, crawling across the floor. “I found you twice!”

“Did not!”

“Did too!”

Their grandparents laughed from the couch, watching the chaos unfold like they were catching up on years of missed bedtime stories and messy living rooms. Georgia stood beside Jared, a warm drink in her hand, her shoulders softening for the first time all day.

“Thank you for this,” she whispered to Jared. “They needed it.”

He looked at her. “So did you.”

Kelvin stirred. His eyelids fluttered open slowly, blinking against the harsh white of the hospital lights. For a moment, his vision was blurry, then it focused on the soft, tear-streaked face of his mother hovering above him."Mommy..." his voice was weak, scratchy, but full of something fragile, hope.Georgia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as tears spilled anew. "Kelvin?" she breathed. He gave her a faint smile."The song..." he whispered, barely audible. "Mommy, sing it again... the one you used to sing when I was scared. Please..."Georgia blinked. She looked down at Kelvin, but his lips hadn’t moved. It was only in her head. Her trembling fingers brushed through his dark curls as she leaned forward, her forehead gently touching his."I know you're tired, baby," she whispered, voice breaking. "But you can't sleep forever, okay? You've got to come back to me. I need you. Your sisters need you."The steady beeping of the heart monitor was the only reply. Georgia shut her eyes.

"He's not waking up... why isn't he waking up?" Georgia's voice cracked as she clutched Kelvin's little hand, her tears soaking the edge of his hospital blanket. The machines beeped steadily beside him. Calm. Repetitive. But nothing about this moment felt calm. Or right. Or fair.Jared stood frozen across the room, jaw clenched so tight the veins in his neck stood out. His fists curled and uncurled like he was holding back a scream, or maybe a punch. The nurse reentered, her steps soft but her words like knives. "He's in a coma. The swelling in his brain caused him to shut down. It's his way of protecting himself... We just have to wait."Wait? Georgia’s soul screamed. Her baby was lying still, hooked to wires and machines, and they wanted her to wait. She leaned closer to his pale face. "Baby, Mommy’s here. I'm not going anywhere, okay? You just have to fight. You’ve always been strong. You’ve got your daddy’s fire and my stubborn heart. So come back to me. Please."Kelvin didn’t mov

Jared pointed at the staircase, where medics were kneeling beside Kelvin’s small, lifeless body. “Look at what you did. Look at him. That’s a child. And you’ll answer for every drop of blood.”She flinched, finally realizing she had crossed a line no one could save her from. Her eyes flicked to Georgia, hoping, somehow, for mercy.Georgia stood tall. Taller than pain. Taller than fear. Her hand found Keira’s, and she stepped forward like a queen defending her kingdom.“You touched my child,” she said. “You put your hands on my son. On my daughter. In my house.”Serefina opened her mouth.“Don’t,” Georgia snapped. “Don’t insult me with lies. I’ve had enough of those to last ten lifetimes.”Serefina’s face twisted. “He got in the way. I wasn’t trying to hurt”“Then what were you trying to do? Snatch my daughter? Scare her? Steal her like you tried to steal everything else from me?”“I just wanted”“You wanted my life,” Georgia hissed, stepping so close that their faces nearly touched. “

"Should I be worried that my children look like they're plotting a coup with my parents?" Georgia repeated, her voice smooth but sharp, like velvet wrapped around a blade.Nobody answered. The tension in the room crackled like a storm waiting to break.Keira blinked at her mother, her little lips trembling. "Mommy, we weren’t plotting. We were... we were remembering."Georgia’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second, but she didn’t let it show. Her arms crossed, shoulders straight, chin high."Remembering what? The bedtime stories I used to tell you, or the family that forgot we existed for seven years?""Georgia," her mother whispered, standing slowly, her voice uncertain, her hands shaking. "Please—""Don’t. Don’t come any closer." Georgia took a step back, the air around her colder now, sharper. "One minute I leave the room and the next, my kids are learning lullabies from the same people who left me bleeding and alone."Kelvin swallowed hard. "Mommy... they said they were sorry.

"Grandma, what does love feel like when you lose it and then find it again?"The question cracked the quiet like a spark in dry air.My mother blinked rapidly, her eyes darting to Kelvin, who stood there, small, serious, and too wise for his years. He clutched a cookie in one hand, but his voice had the weight of thunder wrapped in innocence. She leaned forward, her hands trembling slightly as they cupped his cheeks. "Baby... love like that feels like holding your breath for years, and finally breathing again."Kelvin's brow wrinkled. "Is that why your eyes look like rain right now?"Tears spilled over before she could even answer. She pulled him close and whispered into his hair, "Yes, baby. That’s exactly why."Across the room, Keria climbed into my father’s lap like it was the most natural thing in the world. Her tiny hand reached up and tapped his nose. “Grandpa, do you remember when I got lost in the forest?”My father stilled. “You were lost?”Keria nodded proudly. “For a whole

"So... these are your parents?" Kelvin asked, blinking up at me with his big moon-soaked eyes, a voice full of innocent wonder. "Does that mean they’re our grandma and grandpa too?"Keria just grinned beside him, her smile so bright it could light up the darkest corners of my memories."Yes, baby," I said gently, brushing a soft curl away from Kelvin’s forehead. "They’re my parents, so that makes them your grandparents too."Kelvin blinked up at me, wide-eyed. “So… they’re your mommy and daddy?”I nodded slowly, the weight of those words settling into my chest. “Yes. They were the ones who raised me. And even though we had a hard time… they’re still my parents. That means they’re your family too.”"Really?!" Kelsey squealed, spinning in a little circle with joy. “Mom, they’re your parents?”I smiled at her enthusiasm, warmth blooming in my chest. “Yeah, baby. They are. And now they’re your grandparents too.”Kelsey rushed over to them without hesitation, stopping right in front of my

“Georgia.”That one word was sharper than any blade I’d carried on the battlefield of my own pain.My eyes locked onto her, my mother. She stood in the doorway, wrapped in silver like the queen of ice I remembered, her hair swept up, her gaze cool but shimmering. The same face I’d cried for in the dark after I ran. The same eyes that had watched me burn and didn’t blink.Jared tensed beside me. Kelsey gripped my hand tighter. My little boy looked up, confused.I didn’t move.“Georgia,” she said again, this time softer. “You came back.”“I didn’t come back for you,” I said, my voice steady. Cold. Honest. She flinched. It was small. Barely there. But I saw it.“I know,” she said. “I wouldn’t expect you to.”Then she walked forward. Slowly. Like the ground between us might crack open. My father followed silently, a step behind her like always. He looked older. Smaller. Like life had peeled something off of him when I left.I didn’t look away.Neither did she.She stopped just in front of

"Come to the palace with me," Jared said, still on his knees in the wet sand. His voice was hoarse with emotion, and the moon above made his silver eyes glow like a wolf on the edge of a shift. “Please, Georgia… come home with me.”Georgia didn’t speak. Her heart was a mess of memories and feelings. The word "home" was complicated now. It used to mean warm hands and full moons spent under the stars. Then it became cold silence, a palace full of shadows, and a title that brought nothing but pain. But looking at Jared, his broad shoulders slumped, the soft quiver in his voice, she didn’t just see the Alpha who broke her.She saw the man who never stopped calling her mate."Why now?" she whispered, hugging her arms tightly around her waist. "After all this time… why now?"Jared stood slowly, the sound of the tide muffling his footsteps as wet sand clung to his pants. His hand lifted, but it stopped just shy of her cheek, trembling slightly. "Because I can't lose you again," he said. "The
