LOGINChapter 31
Daniella’s Pov
The bright lights of the grand ballroom hurt my eyes as I walk through the heavy double doors in my black and white volunteer uniform.
I carry a heavy tray filled with glasses of expensive champagne, my hands shaking so badly the glass rims clink against each other. When the head coordinator assigned our student team to help at this high-society gala tonight, I did not know it was Kent’s family event. If I had known, I would have locked myself in my bedroom and never come out.
Now, I am trapped right in the middle of it.
I keep my head down, staring at the polished marble floor, trying to blend into the background. But then I look up across the crowded room, and my breath catches completely in my throat.
Kent is standing near the raised stage. He is wearing a sharp, expensive black tuxedo that fits his tall frame perfectly, making him look like a prince from a tragic story. And standing right beside him, holding tightly onto his arm like she owns him, is Freya. She looks stunning in a glittering silver gown, laughing loudly as she leans her head against Kent’s shoulder.
The sight hits me right in the chest like a heavy blow. It hurts so much more than I ever expected it to. Standing here in a cheap uniform holding a tray of drinks, I feel small, stupid, and completely out of place.
Freya turns her head, and her cold eyes suddenly lock onto mine across the room. A cruel, knowing smile touches her red lips. She deliberately presses her body closer to Kent, sliding her hand down his arm to wrap her fingers around his. She is showing off, making sure I see every single second of it, clearly enjoying the way it tears me apart inside.
I look away quickly, my face burning hot. I turn around and rush toward the side doors, needing to escape the suffocating air of the ballroom before I burst into tears right in front of everyone.
I slip through a heavy side door and step into a quiet, empty hallway. The loud music from the ballroom fades into a dull thud against the walls. I lean back against the cool plaster, closing my eyes and taking deep, shaky breaths to calm my racing heart.
"Daniella."
My eyes snap open.
Kent is standing right in front of me. I didn't even hear him walk down the hallway. He looks angry, exhausted, and desperate all at the same time. The sharp edge in his eyes melts the second he looks at my pale face.
"What are you doing here?" Kent asks, his voice low and urgent as he steps closer. "When I saw you walk into the ballroom in that uniform, my heart stopped. Why would you volunteer for this event? Don't you know how dangerous this is?"
"I didn't know," I whisper, looking down at the floor. "The university needed volunteers. I needed the extra credit. I didn't know it was your family's party, Kent."
Kent lets out a harsh breath. He reaches out, taking the heavy tray right out of my hands and setting it down on a nearby antique table. Then he grabs my cold hands in his warm ones, ignoring everything else in the world.
"I hated seeing her touch me out there," Kent says suddenly, his voice thick with anger and regret. "I hated every single second of standing on that stage with Freya, knowing you were watching from the crowd. I couldn't even look at her, Daniella. All I could think about was you."
My throat tightens. "You shouldn't say things like that. She is your fiancée. Your family is right out there."
"I don't care," Kent snaps softly, stepping even closer until I can feel the heat radiating off his body. His dark eyes search my face, burning with raw emotion. "I haven't stopped thinking about what you asked me in the storage room the other day. About whether I would care if you were carrying another man's child. Daniella, you have to tell me the truth. What is going on with you? Why have you been so sick? Why are you hiding things from me?"
The panic rises in my chest like a tidal wave. Here we are. In a quiet hallway of his engagement gala, with his rich family just through those doors, and the truth is sitting right on the tip of my tongue. I cannot lie to him anymore. I am too tired, too weak, and too scared to keep carrying this heavy secret all by myself.
"You want the truth, Kent?" I ask, my voice trembling so hard the words barely come out. I look straight into his dark eyes, tears spilling over my eyelashes and running down my cheeks. "You want to know why I've been throwing up every morning? Why I can barely stand up straight some days?"
Kent holds his breath, his hands gripping mine tighter. "Tell me."
"I'm sick," I whisper, my voice cracking completely. "I'm sick because... because I'm pregnant, Kent."
The words hang in the quiet hallway like heavy glass, ready to shatter.
Kent freezes. The color drains completely out of his face. His eyes widen in pure, unadulterated shock, and his mouth opens slightly, but no sound comes out. He looks at me like he has just been struck by lightning. Every piece of the puzzle finally clicks together in his mind—the morning sickness, the stress, the sleepless nights, and the question I asked him in the storage room.
He opens his mouth, finally finding his voice, ready to ask the one question that matters more than anything else in the world: Is it mine?
Before the word can even form on his lips, a sharp, loud voice echoes down the hallway from the direction of the ballroom.
"Kent! Kent, darling, where are you? Your grandfather is looking for you for the toast!"
It is Freya. Her footsteps click loudly against the marble floor, getting closer with every second.
Panic slams into us. Kent turns his head toward the sound, his jaw tightening into a hard, angry line of pure frustration. He looks back at me, his eyes full of a desperate, trapped plea. He wants to stay. He wants to finish this conversation, to demand the rest of the truth, to hold me and figure out what we are going to do.
"Daniella, wait—" Kent starts to say, reaching out his hand to grab my arm.
"Go," I whisper, stepping backward and pulling away from his touch. My heart shatters into pieces all over again. I look at him with tear-filled eyes, knowing I have only told him half the truth. I told him about the baby, but I never got the chance to tell him whose baby it actually is.
Before Freya rounds the corner into the hallway, I turn on my heel and run away as fast as my shaking legs can carry me.
I hide behind a large marble pillar near the side exit, my chest heaving and tears blurring my vision. From my hiding spot, I watch through the open doorway as Kent is forced to turn around and walk back toward the bright lights of the ballroom. I watch him smooth out his jacket, put his mask back on, and let Freya hook her arm through his once more.
He walks away into his golden cage, leaving me standing alone in the shadows with a secret that is about to destroy everything.
Chapter 35 Daniella’s Pov My front door slams shut, and the heavy weight of the entire world crashes down on my shoulders all at once. I slide down the wooden wall of the hallway until I am sitting flat on the floor, pulling my knees up against my chest. My mind spins so fast I feel sick. Kent’s words from the gala balcony—I want you, more than the money, more than the company—echo over and over inside my head. He loves me. Or at least, he says he does. Instead of feeling safe and happy, a cold wave of pure terror freezes my blood. A billionaire family like Kent’s does not just let go of their billion-dollar merger because the son falls in love with a poor student on a scholarship. If his grandfather finds out about us—and about our baby—they will crush me like a bug. They will use their lawyers, their power, and their money to tear my life into tiny pieces. "Daniella?" Footsteps echo softly down the hall, and my mother walks into view. She looks down at me, her tired face full
Chapter 34 Kent’s Pov My body moves before my brain can even catch up. Freya takes another step closer to us, her eyes sharp like broken glass, but I immediately step right into the middle of the gap, blocking her view of Daniella completely. I stand tall, my shoulders squared, putting my entire body between Freya and the girl carrying my child. "Kent," Freya says, her voice shaking with sudden, dangerous anger. "What is going on here? Why are you hiding her? What were you two doing out here on this dark balcony?" "It is none of your business, Freya," I snap back. My voice is hard and cold, dropping every single polite mask I usually wear for high-society events. Freya’s jaw drops open in pure shock. She is not used to me speaking to her this way. She glares past my shoulder, trying to look at Daniella, who is standing quietly in the shadows. "None of my business?" Freya repeats, her voice rising in pitch. "We are engaged, Kent! My father’s money is keeping your family's busine
Chapter 33 Daniella’s Pov My breath catches in my throat as I wait for Kent to speak, terrified that his silence means he is angry, or worse, that he regrets ever looking at me. "Say it again," Kent whispers. His voice is very quiet, almost like he is afraid the wind will blow the words away. He looks down at me, his dark eyes wide and fixed on my face. "Tell me again, Daniella." "The baby is yours," I repeat, my voice trembling so hard the words barely come out. "It's yours, Kent. From that night at the penthouse." Kent stays completely still. For a long, painful second, he does not move a single muscle. I watch the shock wash over his face, turning his pale skin even paler as his mind tries to catch up with the truth. Then, a heavy breath rushes out of his lungs. "Mine," he says, testing the word like it is something fragile and precious he has never held before. A frown touches his brow as he looks at me. "Why didn't you tell me sooner, Daniella? Why did you keep this a secre
Chapter 32 Kent’s Pov My legs feel like heavy lead as I walk back through the heavy double doors and step back into the blinding lights of the grand ballroom. The loud music and happy laughter of high-society people sound like a buzzing noise far away in my ears. Daniella’s words echo over and over inside my head, loud and clear, shaking my entire world upside down. I'm pregnant. She said she was pregnant. But she never finished the sentence. She never said who the father was before Freya’s voice interrupted us and she ran away. Yet, as I stand there on the raised stage beside Freya, my mind races a million miles a minute. I count back the days. I think about the rainy night at the penthouse. I think about the way our bodies fit together in the dark, the way we crossed a line we could never uncross. The math hits me like a sudden punch to my chest. Could it be mine? Freya squeezes my arm tightly, flashing a brilliant, fake smile at the crowded room as the photographer’s camera

Chapter 29Daniella’s PovMy stomach rolls over the second I open my eyes, and I have to race to the bathroom before I even brush my teeth.Kneeling on the cold tile floor, clutching my stomach while I throw up into the toilet, I feel completely helpless. I am so tired. Every morning is the same sick nightmare, and I know I cannot hide this growing secret for much longer. Soon, my flat stomach will round out, people will start staring, and Gareth will figure out the truth. Worst of all, Kent is starting to care too much. Every time he looks at me with those deep, dark eyes, my heart breaks all over again.By the time I manage to get dressed and walk onto the university campus, my legs feel like heavy stone. The morning air is cold, but my skin feels hot and sweaty. I tell myself that today I will stay far away from Kent’s classroom. I will keep my head down, do my work, and protect both of us from the mess we created.Of course, plans never work out the way you want them to.As I walk
