Lyra's POV

The night came with a strange stillness. The house was quiet, almost too quiet, like it was holding its breath, waiting for something to snap. I had just finished tucking Finn into bed. He had fallen asleep clutching one of his new dinosaur toys, his tiny fingers curled around it like it was a treasure. I stood there for a moment, just watching him. The way his chest rose and fell, how peaceful he looked. That boy was my anchor. My reason.

And I had promised him I wasn’t leaving.

But promises meant nothing in a house built on secrets.

I walked down the stairs, heart pounding profusely. Rhys had gone out earlier. Said he had to meet someone. He hadn’t told me who. He hadn’t come back. It was almost midnight. The silence was beginning to feel like a scream.

I curled up on the couch, phone in hand, debating if I should call him. Just as I opened my messages, a loud knock at the door made me freeze. My fingers tightened around the phone, getting ready for action.
