“Mon cherie,” Estelle came striding through the door, “coffee for two?”

Her heels clapped on the marble floor as she held two ceramic cups, sliding one to me across the table.

“How come you only come here when Heath isn’t around?” I asked, a reluctant grin tugging at my lips.

“Monseiur Moore,” she said, frowning, “coincidentally, zat’s when I’m most free.”

“It can’t be because you’re scared, right?”

“Never. We French aren’t ever scared of ze English.” She gave a dramatic little sniff.

The impact tore through me like a physical force, hurling me against the seat in front of me. I felt something crack—a rib, maybe, or just my sanity—and then the world went silent. When I opened my eyes, I was hanging upside down. The plane had come to rest on its side, groaning like a dying beast. Smoke coiled through the cabin. Somewhere behind me, there was fire. "Katherine!" Heath's voice, closer now. His hands found my waist, unhooking my seat belt, lowering me to the crumpled ceiling. "Are you hurt?" "I don't think so." I tested my limbs, wincing at the pain in my ribs. "You?" "I'm fine. We need to move. Now." He pulled me through the wreckage, past the pilot's body—I didn't look, couldn't look—and out into the blinding Egyptian sun. The air hit me like a furnace, dry and harsh, and I realized I was shaking. "Are you okay?" Heath's hands were on my face again, searching my eyes for damage. "Katherine, talk to me." "They're going to find us." "Yes." "The pilot—" "He was

I pressed my forehead against the cool window, watching London shrink into a patchwork of lights and shadows below. Six hours ago, I'd been standing in a safe house, my mother's hand in mine, trying to memorize the lines of her face in case this was the last time I'd see it."Still afraid of flying?" Heath's voice came from behind me, that low rumble I'd learned to read like a pulse. I could tell when he was trying to be light, when he was deflecting, when the weight of everything we carried pressed down on his shoulders."I'm afraid of everything," I said, not turning around. "Didn't you know that's my defining characteristic?"He moved closer, and I felt the warmth radiating from his body before he settled into the seat beside me. Our shoulders almost touched. He'd given me space for the first hour of the flight, retreating to the opposite end of the cabin with a tablet full of encrypted files. Now he was here, and I could smell his cologne—something expensive and subtle, like cedar

My father hadn't died of shame. He hadn't died because of me. He'd been murdered because of what he'd discovered. The guilt I'd carried for six years—the weight that had bent my spine, hollowed my chest, made me believe I was poison to everyone I loved—evaporated in a single, terrible instant. I was still crying when Heath found me. He stood in the doorway, his frame filling the space, his eyes dark with concern. He'd come to check on me, to ensure the security detail was in place, to make sure no one else had been sent to finish what the men at the hospital had started. "Katherine?" His voice was soft, uncertain. I looked up at him, my cheeks wet, my breath ragged. And for the first time, I didn't push him away. "I was wrong," I whispered. "I was so wrong." He crossed to me, kneeling beside the chair, his hands finding mine. "What happened?" I showed him the journal. He read the final entry, and I watched his face transform, the carefully constructed walls crumbling, revealing

Mum's eyes had already fluttered closed, the effort of consciousness too much to sustain. Her breathing deepened into sleep, her hand going slack in my grasp.I sat frozen, my heart pounding against my ribs. My father. The symbol. The men who'd attacked my mum. It was all connected. It had always been connected.I kissed my mum's forehead and left the room, closing the door softly behind me. Heath was waiting in the corridor, his back against the wall, his expression unreadable."She's asleep," I said."Good." He pushed off from the wall. "We need to talk."We moved to the living room, a space that was too elegant for a safe house. I sank onto the sofa, suddenly exhausted. Heath sat across from me, his elbows on his knees, his hands clasped together."I've been thinking," he said slowly. "About what happened tonight. About the men in the hospital.""They were MARIS, weren't they? Or whatever group controls it."He nodded. "My father's people. Or Steen's. I don't know which. But the fac

The room was chaos. Two men in surgical scrubs stood over my mum's bed, one of them holding a syringe, the other with his hand pressed over her mouth. My mum's eyes were wide, terrified, her body thrashing weakly against the restraints."Let her go!" I screamed. The man with the syringe turned, his eyes cold and calculating. "Ms. Hall. We were wondering when you'd arrive."Heath moved before I could react, crossing the room in three rapid strides. He grabbed the man's wrist, twisting it sharply until the syringe clattered to the floor. The other man lunged, but Heath's security team was already pouring through the door, guns drawn, voices sharp.A loud noise rag in the room. One of the me dropped to the ground. "Drop it! Now!" Vito said, wit ees that dared him to disobey. The man complied, their hands raised, they hadn't expected reinforcements. But I barely saw them. I was at my mum's bedside, pulling the restraints free, clutching my mum's hand."Mum. Mum, I'm here. I'm here."Mum'

Pain flickered across his face. "I was protecting you. The video wasn't meant to hurt you—it was meant to make you hate me. To make you cut ties with me. If they knew I cared about you, they would have—"He stopped, jaw tight."They killed my men. Three of them. Because they were close to me." His voice cracked. "They'd kill anyone I love, Katherine. That's why I pushed you away. It was the only way to keep you alive.""You could have told me." I stood, backing away from him. "You could have trusted me.""You were seventeen. I couldn't drag you into this. I thought if you hated me, you'd forget me. You'd survive.""I didn't forget you." My voice broke. "I couldn't. You ruined me."He leaned towards me, then stopped. "I know.""No, you don't know." I was crying now, tears spilling down my cheeks. "My father worked himself to death trying to put our family back together after what you did. My mother is in the hospital because of the stress, the poverty, the shame. You didn't protect me.
