LOGINLiam’s eyes snapped open at 4:07 AM, the same time his internal alarm had gone off for years.
The room was still dark, the city outside the window quiet except for the occasional distant hum of traffic. He lay there for a few seconds, staring at the ceiling, before the weight of the new reality settled over him like a bad hangover.
Raphael Thorne was in his room. In his space. Breathing the same air.
Liam turned his head slightly. The other bed held a large, sleeping form under the covers. Raphael hadn’t moved much. Good. The less interaction, the better.
He slipped out of bed quietly, feet hitting the cold floor. He dressed in the dark in his compression shorts, sweats, hoodie, and his favorite training shoes. In the bathroom, he brushed his teeth, splashed water on his face, and ran a quick mental checklist for the day’s practice. Drills. Line chemistry. Power play setups. All the things he needed to stay sharp as captain.
When he stepped back into the bedroom, Raphael was still dead asleep, one arm thrown over his face, chest rising and falling steadily.
Liam paused at the door, keys in hand. Part of him, a big, petty part, wanted to leave the bastard there. Let him miss his first official practice with the Frostbite Wolves. Let the coaches rip into him. It would serve him right after all the shit he’d pulled on the ice for two seasons.
But Liam was the captain. And captains didn’t let new players fuck up on day one, no matter how much they hated them.
He crossed the room in three strides and kicked the side of Raphael’s bed, hard enough to jolt the frame.
“Get up, Thorne. Practice in an hour.”
Raphael stirred, muttering something incoherent before cracking one eye open. “The fuck… what time is it?”
“Time for you to stop sleeping like a lazy ass. If you’re late, you’re running ten extra laps. Don’t test me.” Liam didn’t wait for a reply. He grabbed his bag and left the apartment, the door clicking shut behind him.
The walk to the training facility was only fifteen minutes on foot through the quiet streets. Liam preferred it this way. Fresh air, clear head, no distractions. He pulled his hood up against the early morning chill and started moving.
His mind, however, wouldn’t stay quiet.
Stuck with a gay roommate for the next few months. The thought made his jaw tighten. Raphael wasn’t even fully gay, he was bi, whatever the hell that meant. Still, the guy had zero problem throwing around sexual innuendoes like it was normal. Liam hated it. Hated the way Raphael talked, hated the way he carried himself like nothing fazed him, hated that management had forced this on him.
Stay away, he told himself. Be civil on the ice. Be a good captain. But keep your distance off it. Don’t let him drag you into his weird world.
The sound of footsteps pulled him out of his thoughts. Liam glanced over his shoulder.
Raphael was jogging to catch up, gym bag bouncing against his side, hair still messy from sleep. He looked mildly pissed.
“You couldn’t wake me up properly?” Raphael called out as he fell into step beside him. “Had to kick the damn bed like a drill sergeant?”
Liam kept his eyes forward. “You’re a grown man. Set an alarm. I’m not your personal wake-up service.”
Raphael snorted. “Yeah, well, it’s my first day. Figured the captain might show a little courtesy.”
Liam let out a sharp, humorless laugh. “Courtesy? You want me to go around knocking on every teammate’s door too? Wake up the whole roster like some fucking nanny? Get real, Thorne.”
Raphael grumbled under his breath, something about “not the same thing,” but Liam didn’t bother asking him to repeat it. They walked the rest of the way in tense silence for a few moments.
Then Raphael’s voice turned lighter. Teasing again. “You always this uptight in the mornings, pretty boy? Or is it just because I’m the one in your bed now?”
Liam stopped walking for half a second, turning to face him on the empty sidewalk. “I seriously don’t like that shit, Thorne. The gay talk. The teasing. The baiting. Cut it out. My team isn’t going to put up with that crap, and neither am I.”
Raphael met his glare without flinching, a slow smirk pulling at his lips. “We’ll see about that, Captain.”
Liam shook his head in disgust and kept walking. The rest of the short journey passed in heavy silence.
When they pushed through the doors of the practice facility, the locker room was already filling up. The moment the team spotted them walking in together, the hooting and whistling started immediately.
“Damn, Cap! First night and you’re already bringing your new boyfriend to practice?” Marcus called out, grinning.
Another player laughed. “How was the sleepover, Lannister? Did he keep you warm?”
“Welcome to the Wolves, Thorne!” someone else shouted. “Try not to make our captain blush too hard.”
The locker room erupted in laughter. One of the older defensemen, Big Mike, leaned back on the bench and added loudly, “Just don’t drop the soap around here, new guy. We don’t play that fairy shit on this team.”
The whole room burst out laughing again. Liam forced a smirk and shook his head along with them, even as irritation crawled under his skin. It was just locker room talk. Normal shit. Still, having it aimed at his situation made his stomach twist.
Coach Harlan walked in a few minutes later, clipboard in hand, and the noise died down.
“Alright, listen up,” Coach said, voice carrying across the room. “Most of you already know, but let me make it official. Raphael Thorne is now a Frostbite Wolf. We traded hard to get him here because he’s going to help us win. I expect you to welcome him as family. No bullshit. We’re one unit now.”
He turned to Raphael. “You good with that, Thorne?”
“Yes, Coach ,” Raphael replied, voice steady and confident.
Coach nodded, then looked at Liam. “Lannister, as captain, I’m putting him under your wing. Personally train him. Show him the plays, the tactics, how we run things here. I want him up to speed fast.”
Liam’s jaw tightened, but he nodded. “Yes, Coach.”
Coach gave a few more instructions about the day’s drills and left the locker room. The moment the door closed behind him, Raphael leaned in close to Liam’s ear, voice low enough for only him to hear.
“I can’t wait for that hands-on training, Cap.”
Liam pulled back sharply, disgust clear on his face. Raphael just smirked and started changing into his practice gear like nothing had happened.
This was going to be a long fucking day.
CHAPTER 141Raphael froze, his hand hovering an inch from the heavy metal door handle. He turned around slowly, his chest heaving, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth groaned under the pressure."Stop playing stupid fucking games, Alex," Raphael snarled, his voice a low, lethal vibration in the freezing air.Alex didn't flinch. He just threw his head back and laughed—a bitter, mocking sound that echoed off the concrete walls of the arena's parking lot."It's not a game, Raph!" Alex taunted, taking a unsteadily swaying step forward, wiping a drop of sweat from his forehead. "It's the truth! Look at you! You're standing out here freezing, running errands for him like a damn dog, while he sits inside where it's warm! Is that what you are to him? His shameful little secret?!"Don't do it, Raphael warned himself, his fists balling tightly in his coat pockets. Do not fall into the viper's trap. He wants you to lose it. He wants a show. For a split second, a tiny, toxic seed of doubt tried to
Chapter 140Raphael swung his gear bag over his shoulder, his boots crunching on the dirty, slushy ice of the arena parking lot. Liam was walking right beside him, hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets, the cold air turning their breath into cute little white clouds."I'm telling you, the third-period line shift was garbage," Raphael grunted, bumping his shoulder lightly against Liam's. "Marcus was gassed. You had to cover his back door twice.""Marcus was fine," Liam replied, a faint, lazy smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "He just needs to stop eating burritos before morning skate.""It's a medical hazard—" Raphael started saying before he stopped dead in his tracks. His jaw dropped. He aggressively slapped his hands against his coat pockets, then his pants, a look of pure, unadulterated horror washing over his face. "No. No, no, no."Liam stopped a few paces ahead, turning around with a raised eyebrow. "What?""My tape!" Raphael gasped, clutching his chest like he’d ju
Chapter 139 They walked back down the dark hallway, the floorboards cold under their bare feet. When they stepped back into the bedroom, Raphael stopped. He looked at his own empty bed across the room, then over at Liam’s. After everything that had just spilled out in the kitchen—after the awkwardness, the secret, and the weird, hysterical laugh about bread—that six-foot gap between their mattresses looked completely absurd and definitely not needed. Liam pulled his blanket back and climbed in, propping himself up against his pillow. He looked over at Raphael, who was just standing there in the middle of the floor, staring at his own bare feet like he was afraid to move. Raphael swallowed hard, his throat tight. "Can I..." Raphael started, his voice barely a breath in the quiet room. He looked up, meeting Liam’s eyes. "Can I lie with you tonight? Please?" Liam didn't say a word. He just shifted over toward the wall, lifting the corner of the heavy duvet as response. Raphael didn
CHAPTER 138The clock on the microwave down the hall chimed 2:00 AM.Raphael was lying flat on his back on his bed, staring up at the shadows on the ceiling. Across the room, separated by almost six feet of cold hardwood floor, Liam was tossing and turning on his own bed. Every groan of the mattress springs, every heavy, frustrated exhale from Liam felt like a wire wrapping tighter around Raphael’s chest. He’s awake, Raphael thought, his hands clenching into the sheets. He’s exhausted, he’s miserable, and it’s all because of me.Liam let out a sudden, loud groan of pure frustration. He kicked his blanket off, swung his legs over the side of the mattress, and stood up. Without looking across the room, he walked out into the dark hallway, his heavy bare feet slapping against the floorboards.Raphael stared at the empty bed. The silence in the room hit him like a physical weight, heavier than before.I can't take this, Raphael thought, panic rising fast and hot in his throat. God, I can
Chapter 137The key turned in the lock, and the heavy front door swung open. The silence inside the apartment hit Raphael like a physical punch. It smelled like stale coffee, cold air, and that cheap, suffocating body spray Alex had been wearing. It made Raphael’s stomach turn inside out.Liam stepped in first, dropping his gym bag by the entryway bench. His eyes swept over the living room—the crumpled throw blanket on the couch, the empty glass on the side table, the absolute scene he just let Liam walk into.Panic flared hot in Raphael’s chest.Don't look at it, Raphael thought, his heart hammering against his ribs. God, please don't look at that couch."I—I know the place is still a mess," Raphael stammered, his voice sounding entirely too loud. He kicked off his boots, tripping over his own laces. "I didn't clean it up yet. I was... after you didn't come back last night, I couldn't sleep. I couldn't even think straight, Liam. I was just sitting here staring at the door. I'm so fu
CHAPTER 136Raphael stared down at the black rubber mats under his boots, his fingers totally numb as he yanked his laces loose. His chest just felt... hollow. Like a cave. And it wasn't from the two hours of getting skated into the ice.Practice was brutal. Total agony.Every single drill, every line rush, Liam just erased him. Completely deleted him. When they lined up for 2-on-1s, Liam didn't even hesitate—he just slid right beside Marcus. Didn't look at Raphael once. During powerplay reps, Raphael called for a drop pass, loud enough for the whole fucking rink to hear. Liam held the puck, turned his back, and flipped it clear across to Miller. He's not even mad, Raphael thought, the realization sitting in his throat like broken glass. He’s just done. He’s completely shut the door, and I’m standing outside in the dark.It hurt worse than getting checked into the boards at full speed. He felt invisible. A ghost wearing a jersey. He didn't stick around to hear the locker room noise
The arena lights hummed overhead as the team took the ice for morning practice. The cold air bit at Liam’s exposed skin, but he welcomed it. it sharpened his focus. He skated out first, stick tapping against the ice, calling out positions for the warm-up drills. Captain’s job. Always had been.Raph
Liam paced the length of his apartment like an animal on heat, the city lights glittering mockingly through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The victory high from last night had curdled into something sour and heavy in his chest. Every time he closed his eyes, he heard Raphael’s voice, low, mocking, f
The locker room smelled like sweat, icy gel, and adrenaline. Liam Lannister sat on the bench, lacing his skates with sharp, precise tugs, jaw tight as he listened to the distant roar of the crowd filtering through the tunnel.Frostbite Wolves versus Shadow Reapers. The biggest rivalry in the league
The bass thumped through the walls of The Icehouse, the team’s favorite upscale club downtown. Neon blue and white lights pulsed across the crowded dance floor, reflecting off glass tables and mirrored columns like shards of ice. The Wolves had reserved the entire VIP section — bottle service flowi
