Monday morning arrived with an uneasy silence.

The apartment that had once been filled with teasing, laughter, and the smell of coffee now felt unusually still.

Pedro barely touched his breakfast.

Liyanna stirred her oatmeal without taking a bite.

Neither mentioned the kiss.

Not because they regretted it.

Because neither knew what happened next.

Finally, Liyanna broke the silence.

“So…”

Pedro looked up.

“So.”

“Are we just pretending that Friday never happened?”

He sighed.

“I’ve been asking myself the same question.”

“And?”

He met her eyes.

“I don’t want to pretend anymore.”

A slow smile spread across her face.

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

Before either of them could continue, Pedro’s phone buzzed.

An email.

From the Office of Student Affairs.

His smile disappeared.

Subject: Request for Meeting

Mr. Pedro Salvador and Mrs. Liyanna Salvador,

As part of a routine review of university housing records, you are requested to attend a meeting with the Student Affairs and Financial Aid offices on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

Attendance is mandatory.

Pedro slowly lowered the phone.

“They know.”

Liyanna read the email herself.

She forced a deep breath.

“Maybe it really is routine.”

Pedro wanted to believe that.

But the anonymous email Emily had warned them about lingered in the back of his mind.

News spread through the married housing complex faster than either of them expected.

By lunchtime, several couples had received similar meeting requests.

Mrs. Whitaker knocked on their door that evening with homemade banana bread.

“I heard they’re reviewing everyone’s paperwork.”

Pedro nodded.

“So did we.”

She smiled reassuringly.

“Don’t worry.”

“They do this every few years.”

“We’ll be fine.”

After she left, Liyanna closed the door.

“I feel terrible.”

“Why?”

“She’s comforting us.”

Pedro reached for her hand without thinking.

“We didn’t lie about caring for each other.”

She looked down at their intertwined fingers.

“No.”

“We didn’t.”

Neither of them let go.

Wednesday arrived.

The walk to Student Affairs felt longer than ever before.

Pedro wore the same navy-blue shirt he’d worn to the courthouse.

Liyanna noticed.

“Nervous outfit?”

He smiled faintly.

“It worked once.”

“Let’s hope it works again.”

Inside the conference room sat three people.

Mrs. Collins.

A representative from Financial Aid.

And a compliance officer named Mr. Reynolds.

Mrs. Collins smiled kindly.

“Thank you for coming.”

The compliance officer opened a folder.

“We’re reviewing several married-student housing applications after receiving an anonymous complaint.”

Pedro’s heart pounded.

Mr. Reynolds continued.

“This does not mean anyone has done anything wrong.”

“We simply need to verify information.”

He asked ordinary questions at first.

“When did you meet?”

“The campus library,” they answered together.

“What were your first impressions of one another?”

Liyanna smiled.

“I thought he was too serious.”

Pedro chuckled.

“I thought she talked too much.”

Mrs. Collins smiled.

“That sounds familiar.”

Then came harder questions.

“What made you decide to marry?”

Pedro paused.

He glanced at Liyanna.

She looked just as frightened.

He could lie.

They both could.

They had rehearsed dozens of answers.

Instead…

Pedro took a slow breath.

“We didn’t get married the way most people do.”

The room grew quiet.

Liyanna looked at him, surprised.

He continued.

“We were both struggling financially.”

“We were scared.”

“We made a decision because we thought it would solve our problems.”

Liyanna reached for his hand beneath the table.

“And it wasn’t the right reason to get married.”

She looked at the committee.

“But somewhere along the way…”

Her voice softened.

“…we stopped pretending.”

Mrs. Collins listened carefully.

Mr. Reynolds closed the folder.

“So you’re admitting the marriage didn’t begin as a traditional romantic relationship.”

Pedro nodded.

“Yes.”

“But we’re also telling you…”

He squeezed Liyanna’s hand.

“…that our feelings are real now.”

Silence settled over the room.

After nearly an hour, the meeting ended.

“We’ll review everything,” Mr. Reynolds said.

“You’ll receive our decision within a week.”

Outside the building, neither Pedro nor Liyanna spoke.

Finally, Liyanna whispered,

“You didn’t have to tell them.”

“I know.”

“We could’ve kept lying.”

Pedro looked toward the campus fountain.

“I don’t want our future to be built on another lie.”

She smiled sadly.

“I love you.”

The words slipped out before she realized she’d spoken them.

Pedro turned toward her.

“What?”

Her cheeks flushed.

“I…”

She laughed nervously.

“I guess that answers Rule Number One.”

Pedro’s eyes softened.

He stepped closer.

“So here’s my answer.”

He cupped her face gently.

“I love you too.”

This time, when they kissed, there was nothing hesitant about it.

Students walked past them.

Some smiled.

Others paid no attention.

For the first time, Pedro didn’t care who saw.

Three days later, Emily knocked on their apartment door.

She looked relieved.

“I found out who sent the anonymous complaint.”

Pedro frowned.

“Who?”

Emily hesitated.

“A graduate assistant named Brian.”

“The same guy who was removed from the housing office last semester.”

Liyanna frowned.

“Why would he do that?”

“He claimed several students were abusing the system.”

“He sent names without proof.”

Pedro sighed.

“So…everyone’s being investigated.”

Emily nodded.

“Not just you.”

She smiled gently.

“I thought you deserved to know.”

Liyanna hugged her before she could think twice.

Emily looked surprised.

Then she hugged her back.

“I’m glad he found you,” Emily whispered.

“So am I,” Liyanna replied.

When Emily left, there was no bitterness.

No jealousy.

Just closure.

The following Friday, another email arrived.

Pedro stared at it for several seconds before opening it.

Liyanna stood beside him.

“Read it.”

He took a deep breath.

After reviewing your case, the university has determined that your housing eligibility will remain under review pending further evaluation.

Liyanna frowned.

“That’s…not a decision.”

“No.”

“It means they still haven’t decided.”

Pedro closed the laptop.

“So we wait.”

That evening, they sat together on the apartment balcony watching the sun set over Savannah.

Neither knew what the university would decide.

They might lose the apartment.

They might lose the financial support that had allowed them to stay in school.

The future was uncertain.

But one thing no longer was.

Pedro reached for Liyanna’s hand.

She smiled and rested her head on his shoulder.

“No more pretending,” she whispered.

He kissed the top of her head.

“No more pretending.”

Above them, the sky glowed shades of orange and pink, as if promising that even after the darkest storms, dawn always found its way back.

They didn’t know what tomorrow would bring.

But whatever happened next…

They would face it together.
