Chapter 1

I was instantly on alert as I thought something serious had happened. So, I quickly returned the call.

"Hello, what's—"

"Ms. Lawson, you're not dead, are you?" A sharp, impatient female voice interrupted. "I have something urgent to tell you! Are you deaf? Why didn't you pick up your phone?"

I glanced at the screen. All the missed calls were from Zoe Street's mother, Christina McSpire. Why was she using different numbers?

After a sleepless night, I could feel my frustration building. I asked, "Mrs. Street, what exactly is so urgent?"

To my surprise, Christina sounded even more impatient than I was. "Didn't I tell you everything last night? Say it back to me now."

I stayed silent, assuming I must have misheard her.

She let out a cold laugh, her voice growing more insistent. "Go grab a pen and paper. Make sure you write everything down.

"Zoe needs to get up at exactly 5:00 am. She has only ten minutes to freshen up and five minutes for the bathroom.

"Now, I'm going to test you. What time does she need to start her morning reading?"

At this point, even a saint would've lost their patience.

I tried to explain, "Mrs. Street, you might not be fully acquainted with our school schedule yet. Zoe just transferred, after all.

"Regardless, our morning reading starts at 7:00 am. Asking her to wake up at 5:00 am is simply too early."

After years of teaching, I had dealt with my fair share of difficult parents. I'd already given Christina all the respect I could. I wasn't about to keep tolerating her demands.

"If you're worried about Zoe adjusting to dorm life, I'll make sure to keep an eye on her. But right now, it's my personal time. Please don't disturb me again."

With that, I ended the call. As soon as I arrived at school, I went straight to Zoe's former homeroom teacher, Maria Hernandez, to discuss the situation. I had taken over this class just over a month after the semester had started.

On my first day as their new teacher, it was hard to believe I was already dealing with something like this. And to be honest, I was at a complete loss.

Maria had claimed she was suffering from heart palpitations, rendering her unable to carry out her duties. As soon as she heard Zoe's name, she couldn't help but shudder. "Good luck, Ms. Lawson," she muttered.

Before I could ask anything further, she quickly excused herself and left. I didn't think much of it and headed to the classroom.

It was breakfast time, so most of the students were still absent. To my surprise, I found Zoe sitting in the front row, her posture straight and composed.

Aside from the surveillance camera installed in the corner, another camera was mounted near her desk. Every move she made was being recorded.

I noticed Zoe's method of memorizing vocabulary was a bit unconventional. She would deliberately read each word out loud three times.

With only ten minutes left before the next class, she finally set her book down and, without a word, took a piece of bread from her desk drawer before devouring it.

Noticing she was having trouble swallowing, I grabbed a glass of water and handed it to her.

"Take it easy. You don't want to choke."

She thanked me, but she showed no sign of slowing down.

My heart sank. At this hour, the housekeeper should have been taking my two-year-old son to the park.A wave of cold washed through me. "Henry!" I screamed. "Can you hear him?" Christina taunted, her laughter crackling through the line. "Your little boy may be cute, but he's far from obedient. I wish he'd stop struggling.""What do you want?" I asked, forcing myself to stay calm.Preston had stationed several bodyguards at home. There was no way they wouldn't notice if something was wrong."What I want is plain and simple," Christina said, dragging her words out in a menacing way. "You need to drop all charges against Paul and let him go free. You must also promise to stay away from Zoe forever. If you don't, your son will pay the price!"All of a sudden, the line went dead. Without a second thought, I called Preston and quickly explained what had happened. His voice was sharp and unyielding as he said, "Don't worry. She won't get away."Henry's watch has an emergency tracker.

With a piercing scream, Christina lunged forward, but the bodyguards held her down firmly. Just then, the door to the ward swung open.Zoe stood there in a hospital gown, her face pale and drawn. Her voice was barely more than a whisper. "Mom, what will it take for you to finally let me go?"The moment Christina saw her, she barked, "Zoe, get over here! You're coming home with me! Stop pretending you're sick!"But Zoe held her ground. She slowly lifted her hand and pointed toward the window at the end of the hallway."If you try to force me again, I'll jump from there.""Go ahead! Do you really think I'm afraid of your threats?" Christina snapped. But as her gaze met Zoe's, she faltered. The despair and emptiness in her daughter's eyes were unmistakable.Zoe's words hadn't been a warning. They were a declaration. Paul's face went pale. "Zoe, please don't do anything foolish!" he shouted.Tears welled up and spilled from Zoe's eyes."Mom, from the instant I open my eyes until

Michael's legs went weak, and he nearly fell to the ground. "Pinnacle Group? Isn't that the company run by Jaleston's richest man?" he blurted out.George smirked. "That's right. The teacher you were trying to fire is married to the CEO of Pinnacle Group."…Twenty minutes later, Zoe and I arrived at the nearest hospital. It was a well-regarded facility with a solid reputation. After a series of examinations, the doctor explained that Zoe's body had developed several health problems as a result of prolonged stress. At barely 18, she was already battling chronic gastritis, eczema, and debilitating migraines. A wave of frustration washed over me. Clearly, some people weren't cut out to be parents. The doctor gave Zoe a mild sedative to help her drift off to sleep.I arranged for a professional caregiver to watch over her and appointed a few bodyguards to stay close by. Once everything was taken care of, I headed home. Not long after I got back, Preston returned. His face was tense

"I'm Preston Chamberlain. Who gave you the right to speak nonsense about my wife?"Not far away, a tall, commanding figure began walking toward us. The person I'd been waiting for had finally shown up.Behind Preston were two bodyguards in black suits and a man carrying a briefcase.Preston approached and asked quietly, "Why couldn't I reach you by phone? I thought something had happened, so I rushed over as soon as I got off the plane."I held up my phone. Its screen was split in two."It got smashed on the floor. By the time you called, it was beyond repair."Preston's eyes hardened as he glanced at my slightly disheveled hair. "And who's responsible for that?"I pointed to Christina across from us. "Mrs. Street. She got the wrong idea and believed I was flirting with Paul. The next thing I knew, she kicked me."Preston glanced at the man behind him. It was George Lowe, the lawyer he had hired."Mr. Lowe," Preston said. "I'm sure you know what to do. By the end of the day, I

The crowd broke into chaos, panic rippling through them like wildfire."What's happening? Is Zoe having a seizure?""She was totally fine just a second ago. What triggered this?""She's not going crazy or anything, right? Maybe it's epilepsy or something medical.""Don't be ridiculous!" The moment someone suggested Zoe was sick, Christina's expression turned cold. She snapped, "Zoe is perfectly healthy! I keep track of everything she eats and drinks. How could she possibly be sick?"That wretch has been spreading lies and misleading everyone. I think it's time she explained what she's really trying to accomplish."Meanwhile, Zoe was barely able to stay on her feet. If this kept up, the carbon dioxide level in her blood would continue to drop. For someone so young, the outcome could be devastating.I hastily turned toward Paul. "Zoe is your daughter, for heaven's sake! Are you seriously just going to stand there and do nothing?"The moment Paul frowned, Christina clutched his

Paul was unrecognizable compared to the man I once knew. The timid, eager-to-please secretary had vanished completely. Now, he wore a perfectly tailored suit, his hair slicked back. As he raised his wrist, the diamonds on his watch shimmered brilliantly. Every inch of him radiated the confidence and poise of a seasoned businessman.Christina threw herself into his arms. "Honey, can you believe these people? No one's letting me get my way!"Paul's eyes flashed with impatience. "Okay, okay, I'm here now, aren't I? Why can't you just stay home? What's all this fuss about this time?"Hurt and furious, Christina stomped her foot. "Honey, you'd better stand up for me right now!"She pointed at me. "That woman's the culprit! It's obvious she has no respect for me. By looking down on me, she's actually belittling you, too."Ignoring Christina, I reached out and helped Zoe to her feet."Stand up," I said firmly. "No one should kneel. You deserve to hold your head high."Like many adoles
