Chapter 1

Presley Quinn came home with his suit jacket slung over one arm and a shopping bag in his hand.

I recognized it right away. It was from that luxury brand, the same one as the necklace Vivienne Ashford had posted on her Instagram.

He walked in, saw that I was awake, and barely looked up.

"Oh, you're home."

Then, he seemed to remember something. He quickly crumpled the bag and shoved it into the trash, as if he were terrified I would catch a glimpse of it.

He slipped off his jacket and loosened his tie, his tone as casual as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

"Our department had a dinner tonight. One of the interns got a full-time offer, so we stayed a little late to celebrate."

He walked over to the fridge and pulled the door open.

Inside was a box of cherries, which a friend had brought over a few days ago. I hadn't been able to bring myself to eat them yet.

Presley reached in, pulled them out, checked the price tag, and then turned back to look at me.

"We didn't split the bill on this, did we?"

I shook my head. "No, a friend gave them to me."

"Then, it doesn't count as a household expense," he said, pulling out his phone and clicking on his budgeting app. "You're covering that one yourself."

I watched his fingers move across the screen, and my mind drifted back to that night two months ago.

My mom's kidneys had failed. The doctors said the deposit for surgery had to be paid right away. I'd borrowed from everyone I could think of, maxed out my credit card, and was still 48,000 dollars short.

It was 1:00 AM. I was crouched on a hospital stairwell, calling Presley, sobbing until my voice had gone completely hoarse.

"Presley, please, just lend it to me. My mom doesn't have much time. I'll pay you back, I swear," I'd told him.

The line went quiet for a few seconds before he spoke, "Your mom's situation is basically a bottomless pit at this point. I'll send you some links to a few legit lending platforms. Figure it out from there."

With that, he hung up.

Three loan app links showed up in my messages a second later.

I convinced myself he was just being rational, that he didn't want emotions getting in the way. But I later found out that during that same month, he'd signed Vivienne Ashford up for a high-end corporate training seminar.

The tuition was 3,600 dollars.

A coworker had asked him if spending that much on a mere intern was really worth it. He'd replied, "We shouldn't stand in the way of a youngster's future."

Just thinking about it made my stomach turn.

It was never that he didn't know how to spend money. He just didn't want to spend it on me.

Presley finished logging the entry and glanced up. "Why do you look so pale?"

I didn't answer his question. Instead, I asked, "Did you have fun at the dinner?"

"It was fine," he said, turning to grab his pajamas. "The girl just got officially hired, so she got a little emotional. The team stayed out a bit longer to keep her company."

As he spoke, he started heading toward the bathroom.

The moment the door clicked shut, the phone resting on the coffee table began to ring, and the contact name was right there on the screen.

It was Vivienne.

I looked at it and didn't move.

It rang twice before the bathroom door opened again. Presley came out with his hair still dripping, walked over fast, and picked it up.

His voice sounded nothing like the businesslike, matter-of-fact tone he used with me.

"Why aren't you asleep yet?" he asked, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Didn't I tell you to cut back on cold stuff? If your stomach's acting up, stay away from iced drinks. Do you like the necklace? I know you've been talking about it forever."

Whatever she said made him chuckle.

"I'm glad you like it. Don't read into it. It's just a congratulatory gift for getting the job. Get some sleep. Don't be late tomorrow," he reminded her.

Only after he hung up did he finally look up, his eyes meeting mine.

His expression flickered for just a second before going back to normal. "What are you staring at?"

I looked at him, and my voice came out a little hoarse. "Presley, I had a miscarriage today."

He went still for a moment. Then, his brows pulled together. "You didn't think to tell me something this serious beforehand?"

I didn't respond.

He kept going, his tone reproachful. "Do you realize this completely throws off our financial planning? A miscarriage out of nowhere means everything we'd budgeted for is gone, and now there'll be additional medical and recovery costs on top of that."

He paused, looking as if he were crunching the numbers in his head.

"Natalie, you could've at least given me a heads-up."

I sat there on the bed and looked at this man I'd spent five years married to, and I felt nothing.

I used to tell myself that if I held on a little longer, if I gave him just a little more grace, he'd eventually turn around and see me.

But now, I knew he would never.

I looked down and picked up my phone, pulling up the out-of-town job relocation offer that had been sitting in my email for three days.

I hadn't replied because I couldn't let go of this marriage and because I still had a sliver of self-respect I wasn't ready to throw away.

Now, without a single moment of hesitation, I hit the accept button.

The moment it went through, I heard Presley ask, "What are you doing over there?"

I looked up at him.

"Nothing," I said, my voice calm.

After that night, Presley disappeared. He stopped coming to the office, and he stopped showing up outside my apartment. The security guard told me he'd seemed to have vanished overnight.I simply nodded when I heard the news, as if I were listening to gossip about a stranger.Sometime later, I was on the phone with a former colleague from back in Bayton, and she brought him up in passing. She said that after I left, Presley had seemed to go off the rails. He cut things off completely with Vivienne, then quit his job and spent his time tracking down anyone who might know where I'd gone.At first, Vivienne thought her moment had finally arrived. She'd shown up at his place and started cooking for him, hoping to weasel her way in.Instead, he kicked her right out.She burst into tears, demanding to know what happened to wanting someone emotionally stable and low-maintenance.Presley stood in the doorway and delivered a single line. "Do you really think you're in the same league as

The second I stepped into the hallway, Presley straightened up.He looked as though he'd been waiting out there for a long time. His hands were red from the cold, and the chill of the night air clung to his hair. When he saw me stop, he immediately fumbled the thermos open and started offering me a portion of bisque with clumsy, hurried hands."Natalie, I made shrimp bisque. You used to love this back in the day, I remember. You just got off work, so have some while it's hot, okay?"Steam curled up from the thermos.Staring down at the thermos, I recalled the time I was burning up with a fever, lying helpless in bed, asking him to bring me a glass of warm water. He'd been in the middle of a game and hadn't even turned his head."Don't you have your own two hands? Stop being so dramatic," he'd said.Later, my fever had climbed to 103°F. I managed to drag myself up to stagger toward the kitchen, and I'd made it halfway there before my legs gave out, and I crouched on the floor,

It was a winter day in Norwell, and the city had gotten one of its rare snowfalls.I'd just walked out of the office with my assistant beside me, going over the next day's schedule, when the security guard at the door glanced toward the street and said quietly, "Ms. Vaughn, I think someone's here for you."I followed his gaze.A man was standing at the bottom of the office steps. He was wearing a wrinkled coat, his hair was a mess, and he had an unkempt stubble. There was a layer of snow collecting at his feet, and he'd lost a noticeable amount of weight.I stared at him for a couple of seconds before I realized who it was.It was Presley. He caught sight of me at the same moment. His eyes instantly reddened, and he practically stumbled forward, lunging up the steps."Natalie—"I stepped back on instinct, but he got his arms around me before I could move away.He held on tight, his arms trembling, as if he were terrified that I'd vanish if he loosened his grip."Natalie, I f

Things moved fast at the new company. The Norwell branch had just taken on a massive commercial development project, and the initial acquisition phase was a total disaster. The documentation was a chaotic mess, deadlines were already slipping, clients were breathing down our necks daily, and the different departments were busy playing hot potato, each refusing to take accountability.I was knee-deep in it by my second day on the job.I spent my days in back-to-back meetings, my evenings auditing files, and my nights hammering out details with the client.Over the course of three days, I barely clocked a dozen hours of sleep. When one was consumed by work, one simply didn't have the luxury of wallowing in grief. Or more accurately, there was no spare moment to keep turning the same rotten memories in one's mind.I stayed in a hotel for the first week. The day I signed the lease on my own apartment, the first thing I did was air the place out.I stripped the bedding, threw the cu

It was Presley. He'd gotten home, found me gone, and the messages came pouring in one after another."Is the divorce agreement for real?""Are you upset about money? Fine. We don't have to split expenses anymore. You can manage all the household finances from now on, okay?""Natalie, talk to me!""Where on earth are you?"I kept my head down, reading through every single message as they popped up, finding the entire thing unbelievably ironic.Even now, at this point, Presley still thought what I cared about was money. He thought I'd walked out over that one cent, over the necklace, and over the fact that he wouldn't loosen his grip on the wallet for me.But he never once understood that what I was done with had nothing to do with who paid for what. It was the fact that his heart was so violently skewed in someone else's direction.I locked my phone and didn't reply to a single message. My pale, hollow reflection stared back at me from the car window. All of a sudden, it felt

Two days before my departure, Presley unexpectedly sent me a text."Let's grab dinner tonight."My response was concise. "Okay."At 7:00 pm, I arrived at the restaurant address he'd sent. The moment I pushed open the door to the private room, I saw Vivienne sitting inside. She had on a light-colored dress, and the four-leaf clover necklace was right around her neck. She froze for a second when she caught sight of me, but she quickly recovered and flashed me a smile. "Natalie, you made it."I stopped and looked over at Presley. His face was a mask of complete indifference as he pulled out a chair for me. "Have a seat. Vivienne's been wanting a chance to clear things up with you, so I figured we could all just grab a bite together."Clear things up?I almost laughed out loud.A husband had a private dinner with his intern, called his wife over to join them, and called it clearing the air.Without causing a scene, I sat down and set my bag by my leg.Vivienne put on her best
