Chapter 3

Author: Oct
“Suit yourself.

“I’m going to pick up Zoey.”

When I reached the Greene villa, Spencer and Zoey were already there.

Zoey was the center of attention. She was surrounded by well-wishers. Spencer’s mother slipped a jade bracelet onto Zoey’s wrist.

“This is the Greene family heirloom. It’s meant for our daughter-in-law!”

Her face was glowing with joy, but the moment she saw me, her smile vanished.

“What are you doing here?”

She looked annoyed, as if she wished I would leave right away.

People nearby turned to watch and waited for drama to unfold.

Spencer wrapped his arm around Zoey’s waist. His eyes narrowed like he wanted to see how I would respond.

Zoey leaned close to him. Her look was provocative.

I smiled calmly. “Why would you say that?

“We’ve been married five years but never had a baby. That’s my fault, of course.

“Now, Ms. Xander is pregnant. Carrying on the Greene family line is the most important thing.”

The room went silent at my words.

Spencer’s smile disappeared. He let go of Zoey.

Even his mother stared at me in shock.

“Are you out of your mind?”

She had expected me to lose control and ruin the dinner. Then, she could throw me out.

I smiled and set down a box at the table.

“This is for Ms. Xander. I hope she likes it.”

In the past, Spencer had always hated it when I got jealous. But tonight, I had nothing to say but good things about Zoey’s pregnancy.

I was gracious and composed. I was the perfect Mrs. Greene.

Spencer should have been pleased.

But his face darkened, and his brows drew tightly together.

“Sit down. Making the whole family wait like this is rude.”

I agreed and took my seat, though I wondered why he was upset.

It did not matter.

I touched the divorce papers tucked in my bag.

Once I gave up the title of Mrs. Greene, Spencer would finally be happy.

Spencer stayed close to Zoey all night.

I sat at the end of the table and watched him take care of her. Even for a small piece of fish, he removed the bones before placing it in her bowl.

He used to be that way with me.

When I had cramps, he held me and warmed my stomach while tears streamed down his face.

When I wanted cakes from across town, he braved two hours of snow to bring them to me.

He lit up a whole city with fireworks when he proposed and said, “Zara, you are my only love.”

I frowned. The Perfect Partner System reminded me not to dwell on how Spencer once treated me.

The more I remembered, the more I would hope for more.

The more I hoped, the less I would be the wife he wanted.

Spencer had once been so good to me, so I told myself that I had to work harder to be the Mrs. Greene he expected me to be.

All through dinner, I did not find the right moment to give him the divorce papers.

I stood at the door in disappointment and waited for Spencer to finally return home with me.

That was when I realized that Zoey and he would be staying the night at the family villa.

“You should go home.”

His hair fell over his eyes. I could not tell what he was feeling.

I nodded and turned to leave. Just as I stepped outside, he called my name.

“Zara.”

I looked back in confusion.

He seemed like he wanted to say something, then stopped.

He rubbed his forehead with a troubled look.

“Forget it! Just text me when you get home.”

Since the day I woke up, it felt like something had been holding my throat shut. I could not make a sound. The system agreed to my request.A moment later, I said Spencer’s name aloud. “Spencer.”He froze, then looked at me in shock and joy. “Zara, y-you can talk again?”I nodded. He hugged me tight, and tears streamed down his face. That night, we talked about the past.He said he still remembered the first time he saw me. I was curled up in a corner like a little mushroom. He said he would never forget the day he proposed. It was the happiest day of his life.Spencer clung to those memories of love. He held me as if he wanted to fuse me into his bones. “Zara, I love you so much.”He fell asleep with his arms around me and a smile on his face. The system chimed into my ear without pause. [Host, if you choose to stay, your reward for completing the mission is a healthy body. That way—]“No!” I interrupted and looked away from Spencer. “Take me to a new world.”

  • Perfect Partner   Chapter 9

It seemed like I could resist Spencer.…The system told me this body could no longer carry the Perfect Partner System, so it unbound itself. That meant my time was running out.I grew thinner by the day. Spencer noticed and became restless. He stopped going to the office and stayed by my bed every day. His mother barged in, pointed at me, and said I was just a pretty face keeping her son from his work. But in the state I was in, I hardly looked like a pretty face.Sometimes, when pain woke me at night, I would look at Spencer asleep beside me and almost believe we were back to the days when we loved each other. However, the disappointment and betrayal I felt were real enough.I could no longer tell what was true and what was false. If his love was real, why did he whisper sweet words to Zoey and treat her the way he once treated me? If his love was false, why did he cling to my hand as if he were afraid I would slip away?On the thirtieth day of my illness, Zoey for

I opened my eyes slowly and saw that he was caught between laughter and tears. Then, to my surprise, he started laughing and pulled me into his arms.“I knew it! I just knew it…”‘Knew what?’ I thought. I was lost.“Zara, I knew you still cared about me! “You were jealous! You couldn’t stand how I treated Zoey. “Zara, it makes me so happy to see you like this.”Every word made my skin crawl. So, Zoey had only been here as a test to see whether I still loved him. Even after losing his baby, he was not grieving. He was thrilled to see me jealous.I looked at the joy on his face and at the blood on his clothes. He was no less than the devil himself to me. I should have pushed him away, but the system in my mind would not let me.He lowered his head and kissed my forehead. “Zara, I know I’ve hurt you these past few days. “Don’t worry. Zoey won’t come between us again. “I’ll always be yours.”His voice was gentle, but I trembled in fear. My thoughts were in a whir

Zoey stared at me in suspicion before she finally let out the words she had been holding back.“Zara, are you really that naive, or are you playing dumb?”I froze. I was not sure what she meant.“You can’t seriously think I’m here for anything other than the title of Mrs. Greene.”Of course, I knew that. I had always known. I wanted to tell her that if Spencer gave the word, I was willing to hand him the divorce papers immediately. But he never asked for it.Instead, he stayed close to Zoey in front of me and looked at me icily. I could not figure out what he actually wanted, and I was too afraid of making him mad to ask about it.So, I said honestly, “Why don’t you ask Spencer?”“Zara!”Zoey’s face twisted. She knocked the pot of chicken soup over. The boiling broth splashed onto my leg, and I gasped in pain.In the past, I would have flown into a rage and demanded that Spencer defend me.But after binding myself to the system, I told myself I could not lose my tempe

I had no parents and no family. He was the only one I could rely on. Thinking of that, a sudden ache rose in my chest. It faded quickly when the pain in my foot returned.I lifted my foot carefully. My sole was torn and bleeding. I wondered how I could get to the living room, find the medicine box, and put something on it to ease the pain. While I was still thinking about it, the bedroom door opened again. The family doctor came in. She cleaned my wound and wrapped it neatly.“Madam, you must not touch water for the next three days.”I nodded. “Sorry to trouble you so late. Thank you.”The doctor looked hesitant. She put away her tools before saying, “Mr. Greene asked me to come here.”I froze and thought of Spencer’s receding back when he had walked away. I thought he had left me here without a care in the world. The doctor hesitated again, then said, “No matter what people say, I believe that Mr. Greene cares about you.”I looked at her and said, “He’s a good man.”Tha

Spencer’s face was filled with disbelief. He staggered back a step and stared at me and the divorce papers.I acted as if I did not notice his shock and pushed the papers toward him again. “It doesn’t matter whether I bought the perfume or not! The fact is that Ms. Xander almost had an accident. “I was careless! I don’t deserve to be Mrs. Greene anymore.”He was silent for a long time before he finally gritted his teeth and turned away. “You’re playing hard to get and trying to push me away just to reel me back in. Zara, you really know how to play this to perfection!”Then, he looked straight into my eyes. “Do you think I’ll be unwilling to divorce you?”I shook my head. “Spencer, I don’t understand what you mean. “Ms. Xander is carrying your baby now. She should rightfully be Mrs. Greene.”His face grew complicated. He looked at me like I was a stranger. “Are you serious about what you just said?”I nodded. “Of course. “You and Ms. Xander are in love. I shouldn’t
