Chapter 4

Author: Monthly Explosion
With that, I closed the door, picked up the cardboard box, and walked away.

Nathaniel didn’t come home that night.

Instead, messages from Isla kept coming.

“Amelia, don’t blame me. You and Nathaniel were never right for each other.”

“We’re close, and if he’s with me, at least he’s staying within the family, so to speak. I grew up without a father, and I can’t let my child grow up without one too.”

Without expression, I blocked her number and deleted all her messages.

Then I opened the refrigerator and threw away the last bottle of peach yogurt from the bottom drawer.

It hit the trash with a dull thud.

The sound felt like a heavy hammer striking my heart.

When we had first moved in together, Nathaniel was still an intern. He would spend his entire paycheck buying yogurt for me and thoughtfully place the bottles on the second or third shelf of the refrigerator.

He said that way, I wouldn’t have to stretch or bend down to reach them.

He used to say that aside from drawing, I was hopelessly absent-minded and needed someone to take good care of me.

Back then, he could be stern with me sometimes.

He would frown and throw away every cup of instant noodles I bought.

He would pull me firmly into his arms and growl, “Amelia, did you get together with me just so you could eat instant noodles for every meal?”

When did he change?

As I thought about it, my eyes grew wet again.

I wiped away my tears and continued throwing things out.

The lucky clover on my desk, the love letters from our college days, the stuffed toys he had molded for me by hand…

One by one, they all ended up in the trash.

By sunrise, the door opened.

Nathaniel stood in the entryway, his face cold.

He didn’t even take off his shoes. He walked straight toward me, pulling the key from his pocket.

Before he could hand it to me—

Slap!

The sharp sound echoed through the room.

His face was knocked to the side by the force of the blow.

I covered my cheek, my hand coming away stained with blood.

Nathaniel glared at me with undisguised disgust, his eyes bloodshot.

He pointed at me, his voice harsh and cold.

“Because of you, Isla got rid of the baby! Are you happy now?

“It was only an embryo. It hadn’t even developed a heartbeat yet, and you were already so eager to provoke her? Now she’s bleeding heavily on the operating table, and we don’t even know if she’ll survive. Are you satisfied?”

His voice rose as he shouted himself hoarse.

There wasn’t a single question in his words. Only accusations.

As if everything that happened to Isla was somehow my fault.

I lifted my face and held out my phone to him, my voice trembling uncontrollably.

“Did I ever say anything cruel to her? See for yourself!”

The next second, he hurled the phone across the room.

It flew in an arc before smashing against the corner of the wall, breaking into several pieces.

It was the first gift he had ever bought me with his internship salary, years ago.

Now it was shattered.

Completely shattered.

Just like our relationship, which had once seemed perfect but had long since been riddled with cracks.

Back then, when he placed it in my palm, his face had turned unusually red. He had fidgeted for a long time before finally saying,

“We use the same brand, just different colors. It’s basically a couple’s phone.”

But now, he had replaced his phone countless times.

And somehow, every new one was always in exactly the color Isla liked.

“Amelia, I had already made up my mind. Once the baby was born, I was going to cut things off with Isla completely.

“We’d get our marriage certificate, have our wedding, whatever you wanted. I would have done it all.

“It was your cruelty that ruined everything! Weren’t you the one who wanted to break up? Fine! We’re done. Get out!”

Nathaniel pointed toward the door, his eyes filled with disappointment.

Then, after giving me one last deep look, he slammed the door behind him and left.

His footsteps gradually faded away.

A moment later, I heard the elevator doors open.

When the hallway finally fell completely silent, I placed the bloodstained key on the table.

As the door closed, tears streamed down my face.

But I didn’t hesitate for even a second.

All I felt was relief.

Isla. Nathaniel.

You would never have anything to do with the rest of my life.

After breakfast, I went downstairs for a walk, only to find Isla waiting outside my apartment building. When she saw me, she gave me a faint smile.“Amelia!“Won’t you invite me upstairs for a chat?”I looked at her. Her gaunt appearance startled me a little, but I still shook my head.“Isla, I don’t think we’re still at a point where we can sit down and talk.”Her eyes reddened as she hurried to explain.“Amelia, please hear me out.“I’m sorry. Ever since you got together with Nathaniel, I don’t know what came over me.“I liked Nathaniel first. But he just had to fall for you. Why? I was better than you in everything. My grades were better, and I was prettier. So why could he only see you?“I couldn’t accept it. As you and I grew closer, I started realizing that Nathaniel and I had more and more in common. I... started having feelings for him.“Before that, we never crossed the line. It wasn’t until the tenth time he secretly went to Mount Rainier with me. He had been drink

My parents were worried that taking a long flight would affect the baby, so despite my protests, they practically dragged me to the hospital. The moment I looked up, I heard a familiar voice.“Amelia?”I was a little surprised to see Nathaniel. I hadn’t expected him to show up in our small city.A ripple of emotion stirred inside me, but it quickly faded.I smiled naturally and stepped around him, pulling Callum along with me.“Hi. You’re blocking my way. Could you move?”At those words, the smile that had just appeared on Nathaniel’s face froze. His gaze fell on Callum, and his expression darkened. In my memory, Nathaniel had always been calm and composed. But now, when he saw the wedding rings on Callum’s and my left ring fingers, his eyes immediately reddened. His lips trembled, and after a long moment, he finally managed to ask,“You… married him?”I nodded impatiently.Callum played with my fingers and looked at him seriously.“Mr. Prescott, you’re blocking our way

Isla was lying on the hospital bed, scrolling through her phone with a smug smile when the door was suddenly kicked open. She looked up and froze at the sight of Nathaniel’s furious face.“Nathaniel, what’s wrong? I called you so many times. Why didn’t you answer?”Nathaniel said nothing.Instead, he walked straight toward her.He stared at her as if he were looking at a complete stranger. His gaze was sharp and scrutinizing, a look Isla had never seen in his eyes before.Panic surged through her chest.“Nathaniel, why are you looking at me like that?”Nathaniel stared at her for a long moment before slowly pulling out his phone. He unlocked it and held it out to her.“So it was all an act.”His voice was frighteningly calm.“First, you made sure Amelia found out that you and I went to Mount Rainier. Then you used my phone to send her the hotel booking information. The pregnancy test results in our chat, everything you said in the hospital room…You planned all of it.“I n

Even when we used to fight, she never ignored me like this…It’s all my fault.”Nathaniel didn’t respond. He simply looked up and said, “Don’t think about it too much. I’ve already taken time off work. Focus on recovering. We’ll deal with everything else once you’re better.”After leaving the hospital, Nathaniel pulled out his phone and called Amelia. After several rings, the call went straight to voicemail. He tried calling several more times, but the result was the same.A sense of unease suddenly settled over Nathaniel. He called the company and asked to speak directly with HR.“Has Amelia been coming to work these past few days?”“Amelia? The next day, I returned to the company to complete the handover. My coworker, Sophie Bennett, came over and asked, “Amelia, did you really break up with Nathaniel?”I nodded. She looked indignant. “Good. Nathaniel is such a jerk. Just now, Isla started dry-heaving a few times, and he immediately panicked, scooped her up, and rushed her to the hospital.”My fingers paused over the keyboard. “Dry-heaving?”She nodded repeatedly. “Yeah. Everyone’s saying that, judging by the way she was acting, Isla is probably pregnant.”She glanced around before lowering her voice.“Amelia, I know she’s your best friend, but she’s never really treated you like one. She and Nathaniel have been involved for a long time. Isla originally didn’t meet the hiring requirements, but Nathaniel was willing to accept lower compensation just to bring her into the company. But when you joined, he didn’t say a word about it…”I swallowed the bitterness in my chest and forced a smile.“So it wasn’t a campus r
