An arrow shot so fast that it only appeared to be a flash of shadow. The arrow stuck into the ground only a few centimeters from a rabbit busy scavenging a bush. The rabbit jumped, realizing that it had escaped death, the animal squeaked with delight and ridicule and then walked away.
A tall young man in a simple hunting suit in a combination of light and dark brown approached the arrow, then pulled it from the ground. He took off his hat, ruffled his reddish hair desperately with a sigh.
"My hunting skills are getting worse."
The young man glanced at the arrow, it still looked good so he took it for reuse. Not far from there, he saw a deer eating mulberry fruit. A lopsided smile immediately etched on his lips.
Maybe the rabbit is too small, I have to start from a bigger target. The young man concentrated on aiming at the deer. Trying not to make the slightest sound when pulling the bowstring. Venison is not as tender as rabbits, it's also much more complicated to cook, but at least better than eating only fruit and mushrooms.
The pointed ears of the deer move quickly, indicating the hunter must act immediately before the prey escapes. Having not had time to release an arrow, a cry for help first distracted him. The young man did not do anything to sharpen his ears, his ears caught a woman's voice.
He immediately traced the sound, letting his dinner escape into the forest. The sound of a scream led the young man to a thick thorn bush that was even taller than his head. Immediately he opened the thicket with both hands and was shocked to find a girl trying to get out of the lake.
The panicked scream was suppressed by the water that continued to enter her mouth. Without thinking, the young man took off his footwear and hunting gear, then jumped into the lake. However, after that, the young man was even confused. This lake was not very deep, not even chest level, he was not a young man who was too tall, but why was this girl so panicked?
The young man immediately embraced the girl to drag her to the surface, and just realized that this girl's body was very heavy. He had to struggle to climb the water until he finally managed to reach the edge of the lake.
The young man's breath was gasping, and his whole body was soaked. He looked at the girl he had just saved in panic, her eyes tightly closed, her lips pale, and not breathing. The young man also just realized that it was not the girl's body that made him heavy, but an iron ball that was tied to her legs.
The young man rubbed his face, trying to remember what first aid for drowning people was, and only managed to remember one way — artificial respiration.
"I should have read more than one page!" The young man complained, he glanced at the girl doubtfully, then shook his head quickly. "I'm not doing this with mixed intentions, I'm doing this to save her life!" Exclaimed the young man to himself.
He covered the girl's short nose, then lifted his chin like a manual sketch, with all his courage brought his face closer to her. Before they had the chance to touch their mouths, the girl opened her eyes wide, then screamed with all her might.
"What are you doing?" The girl tried to hit the foreign youth in front of her.
"W — wait a minute, you misunderstood, I didn't mean that!"
"Nonsense! You were obviously trying to harass me! You pervert!"
"You almost drowned, I was just trying to do first aid, please believe me!"
The girl stopped the attack, then examined herself. Surprisingly, she was surprised to see her whole body was soaked, her eyes wandering as if she was remembering an incident. Her panicked face gradually calmed down, although the breath was still roaring. The girl looked at the youth in front of her hesitantly.
"I almost drowned?"
"Right ... don't you remember?"
"And you saved me?"
"I think so ..." The young man scratched his reddish hair awkwardly. This girl's jet-black bead suddenly made him nervous. "Why did you get in the middle of the lake, and ... who did that to you?" He continued, glancing at the iron ball that tied the girl's feet.
Instead of answering, tears fell from the girl's gloomy lids, and she hugged the strange youth in front of her as tightly as possible. "I'm so scared!"
The young man was very startled because no woman has ever hugged him this tight except for his mother. However, he also did not have the heart to refuse the girl's drenched body who was trembling with cold, it seemed she had indeed experienced something bad. So awkwardly the young man hugged back, stroking her wet black hair.
"It's okay, you're safe now. Where do you come from? Why are you crying? Who did this to you?"
The girl was still sobbing over her broad chest for a few seconds, then let go with an embarrassed flushed face. Seeing the expressionless face as well as the blank gaze she continued to brush on the ground, clearly showed that the girl would not answer any questions. So the red-haired young man spoke again.
"Looks like I asked too many questions, we don't even know each other yet."
This time, the girl lifted her head to look back at the emerald green bead belonging to the strange youth in front of her, who was smiling warmly as he held out his hand.
“My name is Harold. Harold Grace, and you? "
Seeing his sweet and sincere treatment, the girl took a deep breath, then wiped her eyes, parted her wet black hair, and put on a smile, the most beautiful smile the world has ever seen.
"My name, Ellinor ...."***
The night breeze blew softly through the small open window, spreading cold air to every room of a simple house located at the edge of the forest. The chill of wind stabbed into the flesh and bones, even though the flames in the furnace were very intense.Coughing sounds can be heard between the rustling of the leaves and the sounds of the night beings. Behind the thin, waving curtain, a man can be seen pressing a damp towel over his wife's head. The wife had fallen ill in the last few months, a disease that came on suddenly without any symptoms. Many doctors have called, from the closest to the far across the city. The little family wealth slowly ran out, but never got good results. The wife's disease never healed, it even seemed to get worse. Tonight, it's been three months of a strange disease residing in his wife's body, his heart is crushed to see this suffering.Once again he wrung out a towel that had been dipped in water, then put it on his wife's head. Two years after Elli's departure seemed so long for Grace's little family. Harold worked hard to take care of everything, working in the city and raising his two children. The man realized he needed help, sometimes Aunt Golda came to the house. A kindful granny who contributed greatly helping Elli's two deliveries, and is always happy to be asked to help look after the Grace sisters. She said she already considered Phillip and Lillian as her grandchildren. However, now the woman was too old to work. Her feet could no longer stand up to the Grace family's house which had to go through small hills. When Aunt Golda was sick, Phillip and Lillian took turns visiting Golda Farm every day and even helped take care of the livestock. When the old granny finally died, the presence of the Grace Siblings was no longer wanted by the Golda family. They often act cynical and complain about how much they spend each month in front of the siblings, making them hesitant to visit.
"Hey, Sluggish, hurry up!" Miranda called out to Lillian who was mopping the floor. "I just told you to get my sandals, what's so hard?"Lillian rushed to bring wool sandals to Miranda who was on her hips in the doorway. Phillip looks from the outside, he was busy doing his usual duty of chopping firewood."Here it is, Mommy."“How many times have I said, don't call me Mommy! I'll only be your mommy when my husband at home! ” She snapped with bulging eyes. "Besides, why do I have to be a mother of stupid and lazy things like you?"Lillian listened with her head down and couldn't do anything about it. They have been living together for five years as a family, but instead of getting affectionate, Miranda seems to hate her stepchildren every second. She saw the Grace siblings as stupid buffalo who should be slaughtered for minced meat.Phillip was fifteen years old now, but he still wasn't brave enough to fight Miranda. That two-faced woma
"Honey, did you read the headlines in the newspaper this morning?" asked Miranda to her husband. They were sitting together in front of the fire to enjoy some relaxing time. Two cups of tea and a plate of pastries accompany their conversation."You know I always read the morning papers," replied Harold as he drank his tea."Well, then you should know, earlier this year Briston City was hit by a crisis. The starvation epidemic is happening everywhere, and it is said it will last until the end of the year.""Yes, I know, what's wrong with that?""What's wrong with that?" Miranda asked as she widened her eyelids, “Crisis is not a trivial thing, Harold! Anyone can be affected, even kings. We could starve to death!""Calm down, Miranda, our food is abundant, and we don't eat too much anyway."“We don't eat too much, but your kids are. They are so greedy, they eat like pigs!"Miranda jerked shut his mouth while Harold alm
The sun sparkled through the windows, lightening the entire room with a golden glow. It's Saturday, which means the Grace siblings can enjoy the peace of the morning a bit longer because their father is not working. However, that morning the door to Phillip and Lillian's room opened abruptly, showing their father busily carrying a large bag. The man approached his children excitedly.“Philly! Hey, Champ, let's wake up!"Harold shook the boy's body until he woke up. Phillip sat on the end of the bed, rubbing his half-closed eyes. Now Harold turned to Lillian's bed and stroked his daughter's head.“My little princess, wake up, Honey. Daddy has a surprise for you."Seeing their father wearing a brown T-shirt wrapped in a vest, gaucho pants plus a pair of high boots made of cloth, and a head covering that is the hallmark of a hunter, their drowsiness immediately disappeared, and excitedly approached their father. Harold had the children in a row a
Finding a way home after sunset was not a great idea. Besides being spooky, Tomer Forest is also terrifying in the dark. They had been walking for hours, and it felt as if they were just circling in it, while the night was getting late. Darkness surrounded, only the dim light from the moon accompanied the Grace sibling's journey. Phillip is exhausting, Lillian's heavy breathing shows that she feels the same way."That's it, Lill. We'll rest here, and continue tomorrow," he said.Lillian immediately dropped to the ground and stretched her legs, while Phillip gathered the dry fanfare around to make a campfire. The previously mixed feelings made the young man forget tidying up the tent before leaving. Luckily the bag full of blankets was still stuck on his shoulders, he immediately spread out two blankets for the mattress. When all finished, they rest leaning on the trunk of a large tree, this trip had been tiring and cause hunger. Lillian took out a piece of bread
Five seconds passed, there was neither Lillian's scream nor the hiss of hot iron hitting her body. Phillip peeked, it turned out that the hot iron was dropped by something shining, the glowing creature also pushed the big Gnome until its grip was released from Lillian.Phillip opened his eyes to find the Gnomes running around screaming for help, sometimes screaming in pain. Each Gnome is being chased by hordes of glowing insects. Phillip thought the insect colony was fireflies that were taking revenge for being used as a light, but he immediately realized that fireflies don't bite. The Big Body gnome was hit the most, he ran frantically while occasionally fighting the insects, but the Gnome was no match for the insects. Only the Wide Hat was not attacked. He was still standing on the pulpit, full of horror watching his people run around. Phillip wondered what was going on until a large flap of wings could be heard in the sky.As soon as he looked up, his eyelids
"Welcome to the Northern Territory of Tomer Forest!"Wiggy stretched out his hands in the middle of the clearing around which thick tree vines grew. There was nothing or anyone else there but the open field. Phillip and Lillian exchanged glances, then looked around waiting for what would happen. After a few seconds, and only the sound of crickets could be heard, Wiggy turned toward the thick tendrils with a thump.“I said welcome to the Northern Territory! Hey, that's the code!"Phillip squinted at the vine, finding out whom Wiggy was talking to. Due to the dominating darkness, he caught only one figure that was surging and immediately spun something like a pulley several times. As soon as the pulley was turned, green tendrils opened wide like curtains, a light made of glowing mushrooms of various colors filled the whole place. The field that was pitch black was lit up by the beautiful neon colors. Giant trees lined up, there were also a few smaller
