Chapter 2

Author: Fishy Freedom
Eyes brimming with tears, I'd memorized the name on the business card, but lost the card in the midst of chaos. Now, as I beheld Aaron's handsome yet contemptuous face, a chilly realization settled over me.

As it turned out, he and Felicia had been toying with me all along.

"If you're done making a scene, Julian, I suggest you leave before you embarrass yourself," Aaron said smugly.

Felicia stood beside him quietly. She did not speak up for me even as she watched Aaron hurl insults in my face.

Aaron patted my face condescendingly and appraised me as if I were a pest. "Felicia saved your life. It's only right that you do everything she asks of you. You were happy to wait on her hand and foot, so why whine about it now?

"Felicia is the heiress of the Holden family, and that makes her extremely popular among men. And yet, she settled for an ordinary guy like you. You had nothing to lose!"

Nothing to lose? I stared at my callused hands and gritted my teeth. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but that didn't give anyone the right to trample on my dignity and feelings!

Aaron's smile was one of cruel satisfaction when he saw me shaking with rage. He walked over to Felicia and pulled her into his arms, then turned to look at me with something close to pity. "Reality is tough, Julian. You're nothing in this world without money or an influential background. Did you think that Felicia truly loved you? Don't kid yourself. She was only toying with you."

The corner of his mouth twitched upward. "Let me guess, Felicia told you that she wouldn't marry anyone in this lifetime except you, huh?"

The sweet memories I'd shared with Felicia surfaced in my mind. They were like a sharp blade that slit my heart open. I couldn't stand the smug look on Aaron's face. I clenched my fists tightly and gritted my teeth.

Felicia noticed my hostility and quickly shielded Aaron, showing the same bravado she had when she shoved me out of the motorcycle's way years ago. Only this time, she was protecting someone else, not me.

I met her gaze, only to see that her brows were drawn, and her face was full of wariness.

Aaron grew even more excited. "I've already looked into you. You grew up in the orphanage and did not know who your family was. You had no parents. Basically, you were an unwanted runt. So, I told Felicia to lie about being an orphan. I was confident you'd empathize with her and take pity on her."

These rich folks had to be bored out of their minds to devise such diabolical plans!

"I was right about you, Julian. A bottom-feeder like you will rise to take the bait and fight tooth and nail just to wait on Felicia! I even made a bet with my friends to see if you'd ever discover that Felicia was lying to you. Trust me when I say that we made big bets.

"But we didn't think you'd be duped for three whole years and still not suspect a thing! It was hilarious! If I hadn't invited Felicia to tag along today, you might have believed her lies forever! You should be thanking me."

An intense roaring filled my head as the cold and hard truth hit me. It was as if my world was crumbling right before my eyes.

I snapped entirely. "You enjoyed playing the role of someone with speech impairment, huh?"

I picked up the mop and swung it at Felicia and Aaron. "You sure are generous, Mr. Schumer. You don't seem to mind tangling with an heiress who happens to be an ordinary bottom-feeder's sloppy seconds!"

Just as the mop was inches away from Aaron, Felicia shielded him. I couldn't draw the mop back in time, and all I heard was a muffled thud as the mop struck her squarely on the arm.

Felicia grunted in pain as her face paled. Beads of sweat trickled down her forehead as she took the hit quietly.

I froze, and Aaron clambered to his feet in time to knock me down with a punch. "You maniac! I'll call the cops and have you arrested!"

He furiously fished out his phone and landed several violent kicks on me.

When Felicia heard that Aaron was planning to call the cops, she quickly clutched the leg of his pants and pleaded, "Don't call the cops! This is all my fault, to begin with."

Aaron cursed angrily, then crouched to inspect Felicia's wound. Blood pulsed in my ears as I watched them huddle close like a couple, the last of my sensibility vanishing.

Aaron growled, "A pissant like you will never reach the top!"

The back of my head hit the ground with a sharp thud, and my vision blackened with the pain.

Felicia looked guilty and apologetic when she saw me groaning in pain and struggling to get up. She broke free from Aaron's embrace and limped over to help me get on my feet. "I'm sorry, Julian…"

I heaved myself upright with newfound resolve and smacked her hand away. "As opposed to a lousy apology, Ms. Holden, I'd rather you make good on your word and pay me back the money now."

At this point, I could not be stupid enough to let my pride be trampled on without any money to show for it. I would make her pay back every penny of the money I'd worked hard to save for her treatment.

Upon hearing this, Felicia gaped at me in bewilderment.

I had only just gotten out of the car when Aaron, the impostor, charged toward me. He was holding a bottle of acid as he lunged at me, crying, "You stole my life, and if I die, I'm taking you with me!""Aaron, stop!" A scream of fear erupted as Felicia fully shielded me from the acid. The bodyguards hurried forward and pulled me behind them while Felicia rolled around painfully on the ground. She was still pleading for mercy on Aaron's behalf. "Please don't call the cops! Aaron didn't mean to hurt anyone! Please let him go…"Before I even had a chance to process the situation, Tessa rushed up to me and assessed me worriedly. I swore I could hear the thudding of her racing heart. "I'm sorry I couldn't be here to protect you right away…"Lewis frantically pulled me to the side. I watched as one of the most powerful men in the business world was reduced to tears. "I thought I was going to lose you again…"Everyone was tearing up at this point. But not me, for I was happy to be surrou

Felicia showed up at my place before the DNA test results were out. She said, "Julian, Aaron's desperate and left without options, so I've no choice but to come to you… What will it take for you to disregard all ties with Lewis? Just name your price and we'll pay you!"I saw the pleading look in Felicia's eyes and reckoned that the DNA test results were an open secret by now. As it turned out, I truly was Lewis' long-lost son, and Aaron was the impostor who'd stolen over 20 years of the life I should've had."Lewis will never spare Aaron if he finds out that Aaron has been pretending to be his son all these years…" Felicia continued, close to begging on her knees. Her unreasonable request had me quaking with rage. "That's my biological father you're talking about! Why should I let Aaron have him?"I'd already let Aaron have Felicia, but I'd be damned if I let him take the family I'd always dreamed of having. I continued, "Besides, how will I know what happened all those years ago o

I raised my hand to shove Felicia aside. I sniped, "You're out of your mind, Felicia."Felicia's face darkened with resentment.Aaron sputtered, "I didn't think you'd move on so quickly, Julian."As my gaze fell on Aaron's face, I suddenly thought about Tessa's theory and considered the possibility that he had stolen the life I should have had. Hatred welled up in me, and I tried my hardest to hold back my rage. But at that moment, Tessa took my hand and stood beside me with steely resolve. "Mr. Schumer, I suggest you think twice before running your mouth, seeing as you'll run out of luck soon."A cryptic smile played on her lips as venom coated her every word.Aaron bristled, and his features twisted into a grimace. "Who the hell are you anyway?"Tessa grinned mischievously and snapped her fingers, not at all incensed by Aaron's crude question. "You may as well cherish what's left of your glory days, Mr. Schumer. I doubt you'll be in a position to talk down to us the next time

The docket contained all the paperwork the orphanage had compiled for me before I left. Among the paperwork were a few photos of me, taken when I was a kid. I didn't have happy memories growing up in the orphanage, so I'd never bothered to open the docket after receiving it.As if nudged by a strange, universal force, I blew the layer of dust off the docket and opened it for the first time.Save for the photographs depicting me as a sour-faced child, the docket also held paperwork containing my birth details. I scanned them, only to go still with shock when I came upon the last page.It was my birth certificate!A small photo of me as a baby had been clipped to the certificate, which bore other details.I was at a loss. I was told that I had no parents and had been abandoned by the roadside. If that were the case, why was there a birth certificate in my docket? My eyes drifted down the certificate and widened when I saw the name on the paper. The words "Aaron Schumer" leaped out

I closed my eyes and heard Felicia's heavy sigh. She said, "This is all my fault. You have every right to hate me."After all that had happened, even the idea of hating her exhausted me.I listened to the sound of her footsteps as they faded down the hall, then closed the door. I leaned against the door and slumped to the floor. I'd already gotten rid of most of Felicia's belongings. She wouldn't come back here again. But no matter where I looked, all I saw were moments I shared with Felicia from the last three years. I tasted salt on my lips again and realized that I was crying.I knew I had to move out of this place if I wanted to bid the past goodbye. Now that I had money, I called my landlady, Jennifer Greene, and told her that I intended to stop my lease.Jennifer had been kind enough to take me in when I had nothing. She put a roof over my head for free, and the monthly rent I paid was only symbolic. She'd even make me hot meals on festive occasions. When she learned that F

  • Played Me for a Fool   Chapter 4

Alas, I'd never met my mother, and I had no idea who my father was. Everyone at the orphanage had told me that they were sure I was an illegitimate child, and that I was abandoned by the roadside like a stray mutt because my parents were embarrassed by me.I'd sobbed and argued that I was not an unwanted stray mutt, and that I had parents. However, my bullies only grinned and guffawed, then picked up rocks to throw at me.I wrapped my arms around my head when I saw the rocks flying toward me, screaming, "Don't hit me!"I raised my hands, only to hit the person behind me.Following a grunt of pain, I bolted upright, sweat trickling down my forehead. A pair of hands gently cupped my face. I must not have been fully awake, then, for I thought I was still living the life I'd had a year ago."Did you have a bad dream again, Julian?"I opened my eyes to see Felicia embracing me tenderly and leaning in for a kiss. I frantically shoved her away. "Who said you could come back here, Felici
