"I'll do anything as long as it makes you happy, Aaron."

"Did you lie to me just to make him happy, too?"

Felicia Holden went rigid at the sound of my voice. She immediately shoved the man she'd been speaking to aside and whirled to face me. "Julian, what are you doing here? I can explain—"

The ornate, expensive evening gown and the dazzling jewelry she wore were a stark contrast with my waiter uniform. I gazed down at my stained uniform and the rag in my hand. I couldn't help the self-deprecating smile that tugged at my lips.

"What is there for you to explain? That your speech impairment miraculously went away without medical treatment? Or what you're doing at a fancy club like this?"

Panic flickered in Felicia's eyes. Her lips quivered, but no words came out of her mouth.

I suppressed the rage that boiled within me and tossed my rag at her. "Did you enjoy seeing me run around with deliveries, or working myself to the bone as a janitor and security guard?"

Unadulterated anger bubbled up within me at the thought of all the hardship I'd endured in the last three years to come up with the money for Felicia's treatment. I snapped, "You're not an orphan, and you don't have a speech impairment! Why did you lie to me?"

The commotion caught the attention of the surrounding crowd, who began to toss curious looks in our direction. Sensing this, Felicia and the man she'd been speaking to earlier dragged me to the corridor at the side.

"Julian, don't make a scene here, okay? We'll talk about this when we get home."

"Home? What home?" I smacked Felicia's hand away and shoved her aside roughly. "Stay the hell away from me, Felicia! I never want to see you again!"

My roar echoed down the corridor.

Felicia stood in place. Guilt and shame flickered in her eyes, but she did not explain any further. Instead, she said quietly, "I'll pay you back every last dollar and cent, and throw in extra as compensation."

Just like that, she'd reduced the three years of my blood, sweat, and tears into a simple transaction without so much as a sincere apology. My blood boiled with rage, and without hesitation, I grabbed the mop beside me and swung it at Felicia and the man.

There was a splash as filthy water got all over them.

The man finally lost it. He swore loudly, then raised his fist as he lunged at me. "You have some nerve!"

But before he could reach me, Felicia cut him off and warned, "Watch yourself. Nothing good can come from making a scene here."

However, the man was undeterred. "I won't have him raise his voice at you!"

Felicia wrapped her arms around him, and it was only through placating words that she got him to calm down. He sauntered up to me arrogantly, eyeing me with contempt. "What, you still can't remember me even though you've been glowering at me for so long?"

I thought he'd looked familiar when I first saw him, but I couldn't put a finger on it.

He snorted indifferently, then turned to wipe Felicia's face with a tissue as he grumbled, "You don't know when to stop, Felicia. You could've toyed with this guy for a couple of weeks, but you just had to kick things up a notch and string him along for three years! The poor bumpkin's attached to you now!"

Felicia did not stop the man, though I caught her shooting an uneasy look at me.

As it turned out, I'd been nothing more than a plaything for the rich and glamorous pair before me.

Upon seeing the blood drain from my face, the man approached me, his smile snide. "Don't you remember me, Julian? It's me, Aaron Schumer."

My mind imploded. Of course I remembered Aaron! He was the only son of Lewis Schumer, a businessman whose net worth was in the billions!

Three years ago, I watched as the paramedics surrounded Felicia, fussing over her. The scene of the accident was pure chaos. My heart had leaped to my throat as guilt and helplessness seized me, turning my mind blank.

At that moment, Aaron stepped out of his fancy car with a bottle of water in his hand. He'd asked me worriedly, "Hey, buddy, you alright?"

He continued to comfort me until my panic gradually eased.

Felicia and I had been walking along a narrow street when an out-of-control motorcycle hurtled toward us. She'd reacted quickly and shoved me aside, only to be hit by it. She passed out on the spot.

Aaron had stayed and comforted me for a while. He handed me a business card afterward, saying, "I know a really good attorney. Call me if you need any help."

I had only just gotten out of the car when Aaron, the impostor, charged toward me. He was holding a bottle of acid as he lunged at me, crying, "You stole my life, and if I die, I'm taking you with me!""Aaron, stop!" A scream of fear erupted as Felicia fully shielded me from the acid. The bodyguards hurried forward and pulled me behind them while Felicia rolled around painfully on the ground. She was still pleading for mercy on Aaron's behalf. "Please don't call the cops! Aaron didn't mean to hurt anyone! Please let him go…"Before I even had a chance to process the situation, Tessa rushed up to me and assessed me worriedly. I swore I could hear the thudding of her racing heart. "I'm sorry I couldn't be here to protect you right away…"Lewis frantically pulled me to the side. I watched as one of the most powerful men in the business world was reduced to tears. "I thought I was going to lose you again…"Everyone was tearing up at this point. But not me, for I was happy to be surrou

Felicia showed up at my place before the DNA test results were out. She said, "Julian, Aaron's desperate and left without options, so I've no choice but to come to you… What will it take for you to disregard all ties with Lewis? Just name your price and we'll pay you!"I saw the pleading look in Felicia's eyes and reckoned that the DNA test results were an open secret by now. As it turned out, I truly was Lewis' long-lost son, and Aaron was the impostor who'd stolen over 20 years of the life I should've had."Lewis will never spare Aaron if he finds out that Aaron has been pretending to be his son all these years…" Felicia continued, close to begging on her knees. Her unreasonable request had me quaking with rage. "That's my biological father you're talking about! Why should I let Aaron have him?"I'd already let Aaron have Felicia, but I'd be damned if I let him take the family I'd always dreamed of having. I continued, "Besides, how will I know what happened all those years ago o

I raised my hand to shove Felicia aside. I sniped, "You're out of your mind, Felicia."Felicia's face darkened with resentment.Aaron sputtered, "I didn't think you'd move on so quickly, Julian."As my gaze fell on Aaron's face, I suddenly thought about Tessa's theory and considered the possibility that he had stolen the life I should have had. Hatred welled up in me, and I tried my hardest to hold back my rage. But at that moment, Tessa took my hand and stood beside me with steely resolve. "Mr. Schumer, I suggest you think twice before running your mouth, seeing as you'll run out of luck soon."A cryptic smile played on her lips as venom coated her every word.Aaron bristled, and his features twisted into a grimace. "Who the hell are you anyway?"Tessa grinned mischievously and snapped her fingers, not at all incensed by Aaron's crude question. "You may as well cherish what's left of your glory days, Mr. Schumer. I doubt you'll be in a position to talk down to us the next time

The docket contained all the paperwork the orphanage had compiled for me before I left. Among the paperwork were a few photos of me, taken when I was a kid. I didn't have happy memories growing up in the orphanage, so I'd never bothered to open the docket after receiving it.As if nudged by a strange, universal force, I blew the layer of dust off the docket and opened it for the first time.Save for the photographs depicting me as a sour-faced child, the docket also held paperwork containing my birth details. I scanned them, only to go still with shock when I came upon the last page.It was my birth certificate!A small photo of me as a baby had been clipped to the certificate, which bore other details.I was at a loss. I was told that I had no parents and had been abandoned by the roadside. If that were the case, why was there a birth certificate in my docket? My eyes drifted down the certificate and widened when I saw the name on the paper. The words "Aaron Schumer" leaped out

I closed my eyes and heard Felicia's heavy sigh. She said, "This is all my fault. You have every right to hate me."After all that had happened, even the idea of hating her exhausted me.I listened to the sound of her footsteps as they faded down the hall, then closed the door. I leaned against the door and slumped to the floor. I'd already gotten rid of most of Felicia's belongings. She wouldn't come back here again. But no matter where I looked, all I saw were moments I shared with Felicia from the last three years. I tasted salt on my lips again and realized that I was crying.I knew I had to move out of this place if I wanted to bid the past goodbye. Now that I had money, I called my landlady, Jennifer Greene, and told her that I intended to stop my lease.Jennifer had been kind enough to take me in when I had nothing. She put a roof over my head for free, and the monthly rent I paid was only symbolic. She'd even make me hot meals on festive occasions. When she learned that F

  • Played Me for a Fool   Chapter 4

Alas, I'd never met my mother, and I had no idea who my father was. Everyone at the orphanage had told me that they were sure I was an illegitimate child, and that I was abandoned by the roadside like a stray mutt because my parents were embarrassed by me.I'd sobbed and argued that I was not an unwanted stray mutt, and that I had parents. However, my bullies only grinned and guffawed, then picked up rocks to throw at me.I wrapped my arms around my head when I saw the rocks flying toward me, screaming, "Don't hit me!"I raised my hands, only to hit the person behind me.Following a grunt of pain, I bolted upright, sweat trickling down my forehead. A pair of hands gently cupped my face. I must not have been fully awake, then, for I thought I was still living the life I'd had a year ago."Did you have a bad dream again, Julian?"I opened my eyes to see Felicia embracing me tenderly and leaning in for a kiss. I frantically shoved her away. "Who said you could come back here, Felici
