"Have you been here long?" Joy asked when she finally got close to her classmates' table.

Her voice was almost covered by the loud music of the bar. The bass was beating in her chest. The lights were colorful, red, blue, and violet turning around on the ceiling. There was a smell of alcohol, cigarettes, perfume, and sweat mixing in the air.

In one corner of the bar were the people she lived with in the dorm for four years. Four years of crying and laughing, breaking down together and staying up late together.

"Yes, April Joy, we have been here for a while!" they answered together while hitting the table.

There were already bottles of Red Horse on the table. There were some plates of food that were only half full. There were laughs that sounded a bit drunk.

They had been inviting her in the group chat for a while. They said it was a celebration. Finally, it was done. Their graduation was just yesterday. She is a graduate now. They are graduates now so they should be happy. But while looking at her classmates who were laughing hard, something hurt in her chest.

She is a graduate now. It means the student excuse is gone. No more saying "I can still endure this, I am just studying." She needs to face real life now.

But she smiled a little at her own thoughts. Is she not going through real life already? Since her first year of college, she was the one sending herself to school. She pays the tuition. She looks for part-time jobs. She saves money so she has food allowance. She has no parents to drop her off. She has no parents to give her allowance. So what else is this "real world" they call?

"Sorry if we did not wait for you at the dorm earlier," Regine whispered while pulling her to sit. "They were just very eager to drink."

She smiled, but her eyes were still tired.

"By the way," Regine added, her voice going down a bit, "we already packed our things at the dorm earlier. Do you want me to help you pack your things?"

It felt like cold water was poured on her head. The dorm.

She had been avoiding thinking about it for days. When they leave there, where will she go? She has not found a boarding house that fits her budget. And what hurts more is she does not have a budget yet. That is why she sold things earlier to have money for a down payment. But she sold nothing. She was even robbed. She scratched her head, trying to hide the heavy feeling in her chest.

Out of all her dorm mates, she was closest to Regine. She borrowed money from her many times. She was asked many times if she was okay even when Regine knew she was not. She did not know where she would end up if she had not met her.

"What is the problem?" Regine asked, obviously noticing her sudden silence. "How was your trip earlier by the way? Oh wait, do you want to eat anything? Just order, I will pay."

She looked at the menu. Chicken sisig. Nachos. Rice meals. Prices she could look at but not order. She just reached for the plate of peanuts in the middle of the table. She took one piece, threw it in the air, and caught it with her mouth.

Perfect catch.

She smiled. If earlier she was throwing popcorn in the air in the middle of the street, now it is peanuts. Life is amazing. Different settings, but the same feeling. She wished her problems were just peanuts too. So she could throw them and eat them, and it would be done.

"Joy, just order now," Regine said again. "I will pay."

"I am okay with these peanuts," she answered.

But when the cold glass of Red Horse was handed to her, she did not say no. Of course, it was free.

And honestly, she wanted to drink. First gulp. Hot in the throat, but cold when it reached the stomach. Second. The flow was faster. Third. The lights on the ceiling were spinning a bit.

Her glass was not even half empty but she already felt dizzy. She is not used to drinking so she gets hit fast. She took peanuts again, but she did not throw them anymore. She could no longer estimate the distance. She did not want to waste free peanuts.

"Reg, please get the glass," she said while smiling widely at her friend. "The glass is becoming two in my sight."

Her classmates laughed.

"See," Regine scolded. "I told you to eat first before drinking."

"Drinking on an empty stomach," another one added.

"Oh! Basic," she answered, but her look was a bit floating. She stood up to get the shot glass. She held onto the table for a moment because the floor seemed to move, she was really dizzy but she did not show it.

She did not want them to worry. She did not want anyone to take her home. She did not want them to ask where she would move. She took the shot glass and drank what was inside.

The hit was more painful and faster.

"It is actually better to be dizzy," she said while still smiling widely. "So when I go home, I will just go straight to sleep."

But instead of going back to her seat, she walked towards the door of the bar. She was swaying but trying hard to straighten her back. She did not even know where the real door was because it was becoming two in her eyes.

"Joy, where are you going?" shouted Regine, who she knew was now standing up to support her.

"Just going to pee!" she shouted back, too loud for the small bar.

"The restroom is not there!"

She stopped for a moment, turned around, smiling even though her vision was a bit blurry.

"I am not going to use the restroom," she said. "I am going home to the dorm."

Deep inside, she did not know where she was really going home. And for the first time that night, she felt a bit nervous. Where will she end up now that she will be unemployed? What is the next step after graduating?

But what Joy did not know was that the man who had his calling card given to her was looking at her again. Their time and moment matched again. That even destiny was making a way for their paths to meet again.

"Do you see that, Brian?" Alexander asked his companion. "Let us follow her.”

It felt like all the blood drained from Joy's body. She couldn't speak. Her trembling eyes repeatedly read the name printed on the document she was holding. She felt as if she had been doused with cold water.EVELYN MONTALBAN.It felt like a cold hand was tightly gripping her stomach every time her gaze landed on that name. Evelyn. The name of Alexander's mother. The only woman she saw in the old photographs, the brave woman who founded the foundation for orphans. The woman who owned the antique pendant that Alexander had entrusted to her with full confidence. But why... why was her name inside a confidential investigation report? And what made her heart pound even faster, why was her name included?"Alexander..."The deafening silence of the room was shattered. Her voice trembled slightly, full of nervousness and confusion. The man just stood not too far away. His dark eyes stared at her, his well-built figure like an emotionless statue, but a tremor in his thick jaw was visible. He

"Why did you really choose me?"A deafening silence remained throughout the living room. Joy was still holding the picture, her knuckles turning white from how tightly she gripped it.Alexander was in front of her. Quiet. No explanation. No defense. And most of all, no lies coming out of his mouth. She didn't know which hurt more, the picture she was holding or his silence."Alexander." Her voice broke as she called him. She lifted her face slightly, desperately stopping her tears from falling. "I'm just asking... Why did you really choose me?"He still didn't answer. Joy laughed bitterly."You don't need to think too long if the answer is simple." She slammed the picture down on the glass table. "You said you saw me fight the snatcher. You said you wanted to see if I could make you happy in your life. You said you wanted someone who could make you laugh."She took a deep breath, feeling the lump in her throat. "But what if that wasn't the real reason? What if there's something else?"

The next day, even though it was still early, Joy already had a strange feeling. She didn't know what it was. Nothing bad had happened. No one called her. There was no new problem. But ever since she opened her eyes, it felt like there was a heavy rock pressing on her chest that she couldn't explain.Maybe because of their conversation last night. Maybe because of everything she learned about Alexander's past. Or maybe because of something she preferred not to name yet: the fact that she was falling too hard for a man who would never be hers. She closed her eyes for a moment. You shouldn't be thinking about that, Joy. She got up and prepared for work. When she arrived at the dining area, Alexander wasn't there. She looked at the wall clock. It was still early. She sat down and started eating.A few minutes later, she heard heavy footsteps from the hallway. Alexander. But he didn't go straight to the table. He was holding his cellphone, his forehead creased, and his expression dark."G

Joy did not follow Alexander's order. Not because she wanted to be stubborn. But because she couldn't just go home knowing there was a storm raging in his office. For the whole afternoon, she remained sitting at her desk. She forced herself to work, but every few minutes, she would look at the CEO's closed door. She had forced herself several times not to meddle. Let him be, Joy. It's not your problem. Alexander has his own life. But every time she thought of the man who came out earlier, the man who looked like Alexander but had threatening eyes, her nervousness returned. And she was even more worried because of the way Alexander looked at her earlier. As if he wanted to say something but couldn't.Around seven o'clock, she gave up pretending. She grabbed her bag. But before she could even stand up, the office door opened."Joy."She stopped. Alexander was standing at the doorframe. The sleeves of his polo shirt were rolled up and his hair was slightly messy."Are you heading home?"

Joy stared for a long time at the small silver pendant in her palm.It was simple. No expensive stones, no grand design. But the two letters engraved on the back of it were what she couldn't get out of her mind.E.M.Evelyn Montalban.Alexander's mother. She slowly returned the necklace inside the small box."Why did you give it to me?"Alexander was still standing by the doorframe, one hand tucked inside his pocket. "Because I want you to keep it.""But why?""Because you're careful."She frowned. "There are many people more careful than I am.""Not with things that matter."She fell silent. His voice didn't beat around the bush; it was direct and certain. "Isn't this important to you?""It is.""Then why to me?"Alexander's expression remained unreadable, but a shadow crossed his eyes. "I don't want it in my room.""Why?"A brief silence passed before he answered in a low voice. "Because every time I see it, I remember things I don't want to remember."Joy sighed. Something stopped

Joy was restless all afternoon. She read the same paragraph on her monitor's document several times, but she couldn't understand anything. Her lunch with Clara kept coming back to her mind over and over again."Alexander doesn't usually let people get close to him." And her searing "I see" when she mentioned the contract.Joy shook her head. "Stop overthinking."She had no right to pry. It was only three months, right? After that, she would go back to her own life. Everything should be simple. But why did it feel like there was a heavy weight pressing on her chest every time she thought about leaving the mansion? She grabbed the mouse again, but before she could continue working, a familiar scent of musk surrounded her. A folder was placed on her desk. She looked up. "Sir?"It was Alexander. "Come with me.""Now? It's almost time to go home. Is there a meeting?""No. You'll see."She stood up and followed. They didn't go to the meeting room. Alexander took her to a small archive room
