The Deal Just Got Dangerous

Emilia POV,

"Pack my bags?" I repeated, staring at Brody like he'd just asked me to hand over my spine. "You don't get to ‘order’ me anywhere, Mr. Callahan. I offered to be your fake fiancée, not your prisoner."

Brody didn't even blink, he strolled back around his desk and dropped into his chair like my outrage was mildly entertaining. "Prisoners don't get a twelve-thousand-square-foot penthouse and a private chef, wildcat. Try again."

"I don't care if it's the Ritz with a view of heaven," I snapped, snatching the draft contract off his desk. "I already gave one man control over my life, and look how that turned out. I'm not signing my name onto another leash."

He raised a brow, steepling his fingers. "Then negotiate."

So I did.

"Clause one." I jabbed my finger at the page. "My finances stay mine. No allowance, no monitored accounts, nothing that makes me feel like a kept woman."

"Done," Brody said easily, sliding the clause back toward me already amended. "Keep your money. I don't need it and I don't want the headache of managing it."

I blinked, thrown by how fast that one landed, then recovered. "Clause two, no security escort trailing me everywhere like I'm a parolee. I come and go on my own."

"Absolutely not." His tone didn't change, but something behind it hardened. "Serena's already unstable, and Gerald's proven he'll use your father as leverage. You get a driver and a discreet detail whenever you leave the building. That's not negotiable, Emilia, that's necessary."

"I don't need a babysitter, Brody."

"You need to still be breathing next week." He held my gaze until I looked away first. "Compromise, plainclothes, unmarked car, they stay invisible unless something goes wrong. That's the best offer you're getting."

I hated that it was reasonable. "Fine. Clause three, public appearances. I'm not performing for your board every time Serena sneezes."

"Public appearances aren't optional," he said flatly. "Serena's watching for cracks, and I won't hand her one because you decided to skip a gala. You show up when it matters. That's the job."

"Fine," I bit out. "But I choose my own wardrobe."

"Within reason." A ghost of a smirk crossed his mouth. "I'm not letting my fiancée show up in something that looks like it survived a thrift store fire."

"Excuse me–"

"Relax, wildcat, I'm teasing." He leaned back, the smirk fading as his eyes lingered on me for a beat too long. The corner of his mouth twitched, but his gaze had gone noticeably darker. "Anything else, or are we finally getting to the part where you decide where you sleep?”

"We are," I said, chin lifting. "Separate wing. Separate bed. That's not a discussion."

"Wasn't planning on discussing it." His silver-blue eyes glinted. "I don't share a bed with women I haven't earned my way into, contract or not."

Heat crawled up my neck. I ignored it and dragged his fountain pen across the last clause instead. "Good. Then we understand each other."

"You negotiate like you've done this before," he mused, watching me work.

"I've survived worse men than you," I said flatly, not looking up. "I just never had the leverage to fight back until now."

Something flickered behind his ice-blue eyes at that, gone before I could name it.

By the time we finished, the contract barely resembled the one he'd first slid across the desk. I actually felt something close to control settling back into my chest, an unfamiliar, welcome weight.

I reached for the pen, ready to sign the version I'd rebuilt with my own hands, when my phone buzzed against the marble.

I almost ignored it. I wish to God I had.

Gerald's name flashed across the screen, and my stomach dropped before I even opened the message.

The photo loaded first, my father, pale and hollow-cheeked, tubes running into his arm, his eyes closed in the harsh fluorescent light of St. Jude's ICU. Underneath it, Gerald's words cut deeper than any blade could.

[ Sign the NDA tonight, Emilia, or watch his treatment get pulled by morning. Your choice. ]

The phone shook in my hand. My vision blurred, for one horrifying second I couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't do anything but stare at my father's face on that screen.

Then I wiped the tears from my eyes and stared at the message again. Fear was still there, but it was no longer the strongest thing I felt. My fingers tightened around the phone until my knuckles ached.

"He wouldn't dare," I whispered, my hands trembling with rage.

"Emilia."

Brody's voice cut through the haze. I hadn't noticed him crossing the room until his hand closed around my wrist, gently prying the phone from my grip. I let him take it, too numb to fight.

I watched his face change as he read it, watched the easy amusement drain out completely, replaced by something far more dangerous. His jaw locked. His eyes went glacial.

"He's threatening a dying man to keep you quiet," Brody said, his voice deadly soft. "Using your father like a bargaining chip."

"He's done it before," I choked out. "He knows exactly where it hurts."

"Not anymore." Brody was already dialing. "Get me the medical response team, now. Full transfer authorization for a patient at St. Jude's ICU, tonight, no delays. If anyone at that hospital breathes wrong in his direction, I want their name within the hour."

I stood frozen, watching him dismantle Gerald's leverage with three sentences and terrifying calm.

He ended the call and turned to face me, his eyes locking onto mine.

"Your father is leaving that hospital tonight." Brody's jaw tightened, his eyes fixed on me. "And Gerald Whitmore just made the very big mistake of making this personal.”

  • Playing The Billionaire's Revenge Queen    The Old Security File

Brody's POV,The drive was taped inside the back cover, flat and black, no bigger than my thumbnail.Thomas found it. He ran a fingernail along the binding the way he'd search a suspect's luggage, and the lining peeled back with a dry little *rip* sound."Sir. There's something under here."My father had hidden it the way he hid everything; in plain sight, behind something nobody would bother to peel.I hadn't opened my mother's box. That was eight years of grief sealed under cardboard, and I wasn't ready. But this was different. Someone had left this file at my door before dawn, no courier, no name, and I wanted to know why before they picked the moment for me."Isolated machine," I said. "Nothing connected to anything.""Already pulling one."××××The paper section came first. Thirty-odd pages in my father's cramped, slanting hand, an index, a timeline, a list of names with question marks beside half of them. The title page read:‘THE MERIDIAN PROGRAM.’"Private medical research," E

  • Playing The Billionaire's Revenge Queen    Eight Years of Lies

Brody's POV,Eight years I'd stood at that grave believing a lie."Say that again," I said."Brody...""Say it again, Mom." My voice came out like gravel. "The doctors said heart failure. That it was sudden, natural, no autopsy. I signed the papers myself.""You signed what they put in front of you." Her hand tightened around mine. "So did I."I pulled free and walked to the window, because if I stayed near that box I was going to tear it open, and I wasn't ready for what was inside."How did you know about the shell companies?" I turned back. "That file never left this building."She hesitated. "An envelope came to my house yesterday. No return address. Copies of the filings, and one word written across the top.""Kingmaker," Emilia said quietly. My mother nodded.Somebody wanted her standing in my living room tonight. I filed that away sharply, for later."Why did you hide it?" I asked."Three weeks before he died, your father stopped sleeping." Her eyes dropped to the box. "He lock

  • Playing The Billionaire's Revenge Queen    His Father's Secret

Emilia's POV,I spent six hours chasing a name that didn't officially exist anywhere."There's no registered business under 'Kingmaker,'" I said, rubbing my eyes as I scrolled through yet another dead-end search. "No corporate filing, no trademark, no LinkedIn, nothing. It's not a company name.""Then what is it?" Thomas asked, hovering near the terminal."A title." I sat back, the pieces finally clicking into place. "Look at this pattern, every shell company we've traced connects to a different public face, different directors, different registered owners, but the actual decisions, the money movement, the timing, it's always identical. Whoever this is doesn't own anything directly. They make other people look like they're in control while they quietly decide where every dollar actually moves.""A ghost," Thomas murmured."A strategist." I pulled up the web of connections I'd mapped across three monitors, dozens of shell companies branching outward like roots from a single, invisible

  • Playing The Billionaire's Revenge Queen    The Vance Connection

Serena's POV,I found the transfer records by accident, buried in a folder on my father's study desk that he'd forgotten to lock.Vance Capital Partners. The same underwriting bank Gerald had mentioned in passing, the same network of shell companies I'd assumed belonged entirely to him.My hands were shaking by the time I stormed into his office."Explain this." I slapped the folder down on his desk, scattering pages across the polished mahogany. "Why is our family's firm connected to the same network attacking Callahan Global?"My father didn't even look up from his newspaper. "I don't know what you're talking about, Serena.""Don't." My voice cracked with fury. "I'm not leaving until you explain this! I've spent weeks running a scandal that's blown up in my face, and the whole time, you've been quietly funding something far bigger behind my back?"He finally set the paper down. His eyes moved over my face, lingering for a moment before he leaned back in his chair, his fingers tappin

  • Playing The Billionaire's Revenge Queen    Someone Bigger Is Behind This

Brody's POV,By morning, the shell companies had multiplied."Eleven assets, four buyers so far," Thomas reported, his screen a wall of scrolling filings. "They're moving fast, sir, faster than any legitimate acquisition process would allow."Emilia leaned over his shoulder, her brow furrowed in concentration. "Pull up the registration details on each one."Thomas complied, four separate shell companies filling the screen, different names, different addresses, different registered agents."They look unrelated," I said."They're not." Emilia pointed to a line buried in the financial disclosures. "Look at the underwriting bank listed on each filing. Same institution, every single time. Different shell companies, same financial backer behind all of them."I felt my stomach tighten. "So this isn't four separate buyers.""It's one buyer," Emilia said quietly, "wearing four different masks."I stared at the screen, the pattern crystallizing into something far uglier than Gerald's petty reve

  • Playing The Billionaire's Revenge Queen    The Hacker

Emilia's POV,"Shut it down," Thomas said the moment Brody told him about the financial breach, already reaching for his phone. "If this touches Callahan's private holdings, we're talking about exposure in the hundreds of millions, sir, we cannot afford to leave that door open for even an hour.""Wait." I held up a hand before he could dial. "If you shut it down now, whoever's inside just disappears and resurfaces somewhere else we can't see. We lose them completely.""So what, we just let them keep stealing from me?" Brody's voice was sharp, his jaw tight."We let them think they're still winning." I pulled a chair up to the terminal, my mind already racing ahead. "We build a controlled section of the system, isolated, monitored, and we plant something inside it valuable enough that whoever's watching can't resist taking the bait."Brody studied me for a long moment, something calculating behind his ice-blue eyes. "And if they realize it's a trap?""Then we've lost nothing we actuall
