I came out of the bathroom and glanced at Anna. She was asleep, breathing steady and quiet.
I chuckled lightly, then placed a call to the reception for a meal.
Just then, my phone beeped. A message from my sister.
Heart hammering, I grabbed my car keys and rushed out of the room.
Minutes later, I arrived at the Upper East side hospital in my car and dashed in.
“How's Mom?” I asked my older sister, Sophia Miller as I dashed into the VIP hospital room.
“Doctor Nate Harrington won’t tell me anything until you get here. Let's meet him now,” Sophia said and together, we went to Doctor Nate's office.
“Where's my mother?” I demanded from doctor Nate as soon as we walked into his office.
“Alex, you are here,” Doctor Nate said and closed the file on his desk.
He pushed his eyeglasses up his nose. “Your mom is receiving treatment. She'll recover in due time—”
“Where's she?” I cut him off, not interested in their usual doctor jargons I sensed he was about to drift into.
“Alex, Chairwoman Rose wanted me to give you this.” He extended a document.
My face tightened as I read it.
I turned back to him, my brows furrowing. “What is this supposed to mean?”
“Alex—”
“Doctor Nate, can you please tell me where my mother is? I need to confirm if she wrote this or if someone is trying to play a trick—”
“Yes, Mom wrote it,” Sophia interjected.
I turned to her, my eyes narrowing in betrayal.
“Sophia, are you aware of this?”
“This is Mom's will, Alex. You have to come back and lead the company.”
“You clearly know my stance in this matter,” I said, trying to contain the mixed emotions brimming inside me.
“I'm afraid, mom doesn't agree,” Sophia muttered with a mocking shrug.
I groaned, my head suddenly throbbing.
I inhaled and faced my sister again in a bid to convince her, because truly, no one else deserved to be in that seat in my mom's absence if not her.
“Listen Sophia, you should lead the Group. Mom trusts you more than anyone else, and no one has been by her side far more than you.”
“How long will you run away from your responsibility?” she questioned, her eyes shifting into a serious glare.
I stopped. Something uneasy rose in my throat.
“You have been by her side for years. This is your call, Sophia… think about it—”
“No Alex, this is your call.” She shook her head, adamant. “You are the one supposed to lead the Group. I honestly don't want to be in a meeting for long hours all my life, stroking the egos of those old geezeers. I think I've had my fill over the years.”
It was unlike her. She was usually not this hell-bent. But this time, she sounded serious.
My head ached. This has always been my biggest fear… walking my mother's path.
“I have no experience. I don't know crap about the company,” I groaned in frustration.
Why couldn't my family accept that I wanted no part in the family business that had spanned generations?
“Then you learn,” Sophia insisted, sticking out her tongue at me.
It was obvious she was enjoying this whole set up.
“Okay, fine. If I ever have to agree to this… where's Mom first?” I turned back to Doctor Nate.
Doctor Nate played a recorded audio from his phone. In the audio, Mom confirmed signing the document.
“How can we trust an audio recording? Anyone could have doctored this,” I said.
“Oh god, Alex. You have so much doubt in you for an Artist,” my sister groaned.
“If she recorded this, then why's she in a hospital, and why can't we see her? And Sophia,” I narrowed my eyes at her, “why are you so calm about this?”
“I’m not really calm,” she sighed, “I trust mom. I think you will make a good CEO. I mean, look at that headline—youngest CEO and fourth generation born of Miller Group—”
“Damn you,” I growled.
“Doctor Nate, listen, if there's something wrong with my mother, then you must let me know right now.”
Just then, my phone rang.
“Mom!” I called on picking the call.
“Alessandro, you finally decided to show your face to your mother,” she fumed, her lips turning downward.
“Mom? Am I really your mother? You have returned from France since then, but I'm just seeing your face.”
“Chairwoman, please you must not stress yourself,” Doctor Nate said.
“Mom, I'm sorry. But first, where are you right now?”
“Can't you see what I'm putting on?” She gestured to the hospital gown she was putting on dramatically.
“Why aren't you in the VIP room? Are you really sick? How exactly are you feeling and why can't I see you?”
“Do what Doctor Harrington and your sister said. Lead the company. He will tell you everything else if you agree to do it.”
The call ended.
I turned to Doctor Nate, my face tight.
“Tell me everything, Doctor Nate. Everything.”
“Your mother has a tumor in her brain.”
I froze, the words hammering in my skull.
“Since when… since when? And why am I just finding out? No… has she started taking treatment?”
“She will undergo surgery soon. Until then, you must lead the Group. She’s in Florida, where she’ll get the best care.”
“Florida?!”
“Why couldn't the doctor be flown here? Who will take care of her over there?”
“She has her personal assistant,” Sophia mumbled, her voice low.
“And why the hell is this supposed to be done in secret?” I questioned, furious.
“To protect the Group, Alex,” Doctor Nate muttered. “You and your sister must remain in New York, and it is expected that the chairwoman is taking a necessary rest from her duties.”
Sophia was quiet. She didn't react.
I glanced at her.
“You knew…” I gasped, disappointed.
How could she not know? She was the closest to my mother.
I felt so stupid. How could she be so tough? How could she and Mom bear it alone and I was there not knowing anything?
God.
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stand.
Without another word, I turned and walked out, the sterile scent of the hospital clinging to me as I stepped into the cold outside.
As I got into my car, a message came in.
“Don’t worry about me and lead the company. Your sister will be there to help you. Make lots of profit and I'll consider forgiving you for being a disobedient child.”
God, she just keeps making me emotional.
Tears clogged my throat. She was still making jokes, even when she was sick.
But that was my mom. That was Rose Miller. Always cheerful even in her worst moments.
I gripped the steering wheel, taking a deep breath.
Getting back to my hotel room, I sank into the bed, the silence swallowing me whole. The exhaustion sat heavy in my chest, pressing, aching.
I hated how empty the room suddenly felt without another presence. How badly I wanted someone.
And the truth came quietly. The only person I wanted was my fuck partner, Anna.
We weren’t supposed to need each other. And it was already Sunday evening. By now, she should have been gone, slipping back into her life.
Still, my fingers hovered over my phone as I remembered the clause in our contract. We could call if we needed to. But no obligation, and no expectations.
“I need you now. Can you make it?”
I stared at the screen long after sending it, my chest tight, already bracing for disappointment.
The reply didn't come.
Then—fifteen minutes later—there was a knock on the door.
I stood, my pulse quickening as I crossed the room.
When I opened it, there she was, solid and real, like she’d stepped straight out of my desperation.
She stood there. Calm. Beautiful. Real.
“Anna,” I breathed, my voice low, almost reverent.
I didn't think she would come.
Alessandro's POV If I hadn't called Frank to inquire of the meeting I was to have on Monday, I would never have known that Anna had gone on a work trip. And worse, with my shithead cousin. “What?!” Was the first thing I blurted when Frank casually mentioned it. It angered me the way he mentioned it casually as though he didn't know what she meant to me.And why the fuck was he just informing me?I should have him fired immediately if it wasn't for one thing. These past days, I had been seriously thinking about Anna. About our relationship. Thinking of how to appease her and make her continue being my fuck partner. Because God, I can't stay a moment without thinking of how our partnership is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It had barely dawn a new day when I drove over to our hotel, only for me to hear she was in Harlem with my jerk cousin. Alone.Something in me snapped. The moment I dropped my call with Frank, I didn't stop to think as I grabbed my phone and dash
Anna's POV “Um…” Noah started, but then stopped as though reconsidering. “C’mmon. I promise you won't regret it,” Sabrina pressed on.Wait…Hold up!Did she just purr at Noah??“Well, I guess we can’t turn you down. Not after you did this for us…” He motioned to the arranged office, a grateful beam on his face. She giggled, gave us the address of the hotel for the party before she left. By 6: pm, Noah and I arrived at the Hotel. I was already itching to be in my bed as I was already tired with all the arrangements and rearrangements of the office, taking care of some paperworkers that needed to be done, and didn't pay much attention to the hotel until we'd walked in and I'd settled in. The party kicked off, and honestly, I had no effing idea I would come to enjoy it. It was so nice. Meeting the other audit team members. And aside from the fact that Sabrina was doing all she could to get Noah to eat her up for the night, everything else was perfect. The mood was right. The atmos
Anna's POV Long after everyone dispersed back to their seats, I stood there trying to wrap my head around what had just happened.Noah had gone back to the marketing team desk. Their office is next to my team… sales team. Demarcated by the down to up glass doors. And worse, his seat was directly opposite my desk. I could clearly see him through the see-through glass doors. When our eyes locked again, I quickly looked away and hurried to the break room. “Oh God,” I breathed as I tore a sachet of coffee mix and emptied it into a cup. I had a bad feeling about this. And I just couldn't tell why. Why did he keep popping up everywhere?I had almost forgotten he was working in the company. And heck couldn't being Alessandro's cousin have gotten him a higher position that didn't need me having to see his face.I sighed, remembering my doctor had warned me to abstain from whatever will stress me. “I'll drive.”A voice sounded behind me. I had the cup at the tip of my lips. But I di
Anna's POV Had he gone crazy?!I looked at the fine man before me, but with whom my heart didn't beat for, and I tried hard not to frown. I stopped, shut my eyes and for one quiet second, forced myself to breathe. God, why is this happening to me again?“Please don't make jokes with me…”“I'm not joking,” Noah interjects, his expression dead serious. “It's just unfortunate I'm finally saying what I've had in mind ever since I met you.”“Anna, I think there's something about you… something different… something alluring…”“Only a crazy man would see them and not desire someone so precious.”“Please stop…” I muttered, my breath ragged. My head felt light as I stepped backwards. “Are you alright?”I heard Noah ask but it sounded as though he was many distance away from me. The banging in my head had increased by maximum. I couldn't see clearly. I staggered, clutching my head. Everything was spinning. Rotating. “What's happening…”Then came the voices. Like noise. Uncomfortable.
Anna's POV This Noah guy kept popping up in unlikely places. And now he’d just saved me from having to engage in a conversation with Alessandro. “Did I do alright?” he asked after we'd gone out of Alessandro's eyesight and earshot.“What?” I feigned confusion. “You seemed bothered by his presence… I mean Alex—oh—the CEO.”I stopped, suddenly realizing something. “You are Ale—the CEO's cousin?”He chuckled. “We don't look alike one bit, right?”“He's on the pompous side. And obnoxious too. Very rude, arrogant…”I stared at him, trying to pinpoint the resemblance. Quite different. Especially with the fact that he talked way more than Alessandro. But there was one though: their handsome features. They were both very gorgeous in their own way. I also see the way his eyes twinkled each time we ran into each other. But… he wasn't Alessandro. His tongue didn't make me feel things. I swallowed painfully, looking away. “Um, so, I didn't catch your name the last time,” he said. “E
Alessandro's POV “Perky Jones…” I growled, my fist clenching hard. She did this. She started this stupid marriage rumour.Immediately Anna stomped out of my office without listening to my explanation, I grabbed my car keys and equally stormed out…To meet the originator of this problem. Minutes later, I drove into Miller's hotel. “And whom do we have here?” a cocky voice drawled as I walked into the room the receptionist downstairs had directed me to. Perky Jones’s hotel room.“You are here.” She smirked, casually getting up from the bed which she was sitting on.“What the hell do you think you are doing?” I grit through clenched teeth. “Oh please keep it down.” She hissed. “I hate loud people and loud places. I already mentioned that to you,” she added, calmly, as though my anger meant nothing to her. “What?”I inhaled sharply. Calm down, Alex. Calm down. “I definitely made my stance clear to you. This marriage will not work–”“And I asked you why?” Perky Jones cut me off.
Anna’s POVChrist!I couldn’t believe myself. I fucking couldn't believe I did it with Alessandro. Right in his office!God, if Frank hadn't helped, by now everyone in the office would have been talking of how I spent hours in the new CEO’s office flirting with him! They would probably call me Lit
Alessandro's POVFrank.Shit. Anna's eyes flew wide open. “Someone's at the door?” she gasped.“My personal assistant.” “Shit. What do we do… I mean what do I do…”“Relax, there's no need to panic—” I tried to calm her.But it only infuriated her the more. “No need??? You have no idea.”Before
~Anna’s POV~That was when it happened—our eyes jamming at the same time. Before I could say Jack, we grabbed each other… in a fierce kiss. Breathless. Urgent. Demanding.Alessandro’s hands roamed all over my body, setting my entire pores on fire.It was as though we were both thinking the same
~Alessandro~“And yup, you are starting work ASAP. I’d have to introduce you to the board members first. Of course, Mom already wrote a handover—”“Just hold on…” I dragged in a heavy breath, and for a moment, I hoped it'd be enough to rest my head because I didn't understand what the heck my sist
