Damien's POV

The ride home was silent.

Not because I had nothing to say.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Maria's face.

Not the bruises.

Not the torn uniform.

Her eyes.

She hadn't looked relieved when I arrived.

She'd looked...

Defeated.

As though she'd already accepted that no one was coming for her.

Then came her words.

"I hate you."

They echoed through my head with every passing mile.

By the time the palace gates came into view, I already knew.

  • Please fuck me, Mr.Alpha   Chapter Twenty - Six

DAMIEN'S POVI stared at the piece of dark fabric in my hand.Someone had entered Black Ridge.Someone had helped them. And whoever it was had known enough about our defenses to avoid detection. That bothered me more than the missing guards. An enemy outside the walls was predictable. An enemy who knew what was happening inside them was another matter entirely.I placed the fabric on the table."Nobody leaves the fortress."The commander nodded."Should we question everyone?""No."He looked surprised."Why not?""Because if there's a traitor among them, they'll know we're looking."I glanced at Draven. He was standing across the table, studying the map.For once, he wasn't smiling."What do you suggest?" he asked.I pointed toward the eastern pass."We give them something."Draven's eyebrows rose."False information?""Exactly."I picked up a map."We'll announce that we're moving half the eastern patrols to the southern ridge tomorrow morning."Draven immediately understood."But we

DRAVEN'S POV By the time we reached Black Ridge, the sun had begun disappearing behind the mountains. The fortress stood exactly as I remembered from Mother's old maps—massive stone walls, watchtowers overlooking the valley, and a narrow road leading toward the northern border. Damien dismounted first. Immediately, the guards straightened. "Alpha Damien." He gave them a brief nod. No unnecessary words. No show of authority. Yet everyone moved when he spoke. I watched carefully. This was the part Mother had failed to explain. Political authority wasn't simply inherited. It was earned. And Damien had clearly earned more respect than I had realized. One of the senior commanders approached him. "We've been expecting you." "Give me the report." The commander handed him a folder. Damien opened it while walking. I followed. For the first time since leaving home, I didn't say anything. I simply observed. Damien asked questions about patrol rotations. Then the supply ro

DRAVEN'S POV I watched Damien walk away. For several seconds, I said nothing. His words remained in my mind. Having our parents' protection doesn't make you invincible. A faint smile tugged at my lips. He really believed that was the problem. He thought I was inexperienced. Naive. Sheltered. The little brother who had been protected from every difficult decision because Mother thought politics was too stressful for me. Perhaps that was exactly what everyone wanted him to believe. I turned toward the carriage waiting at the estate gates. Mother had always been careful with me. She kept me away from council disputes. She discouraged me from involving myself in pack negotiations. Whenever Father discussed matters concerning alliances, territory, or succession, I was conveniently sent somewhere else. Damien had mistaken that protection for weakness. That was his first mistake. He had spent years believing that because I wasn't standing beside Father during every council

DRAVEN'S POV. I watched Maria walk away. For several seconds, I didn't move. "Maria." She kept walking. "Maria, wait." Nothing. Her shoulders were hunched, her head lowered, and her hands were buried inside the sleeves of her uniform. That familiar posture again. The same posture she carried whenever she believed she had done something wrong. I clenched my jaw so hard it ached. Damn it. I had done it again. I had tried to protect her... And somehow I’d made things worse. I replayed our conversation in my head, each word now sounding sharper, crueler than I remembered. You should be happy you've saved yourself for your mate. I'd mean

For a long moment... Damien didn't answer. He simply looked at me. Not with judgment. Not with sympathy. With quiet disbelief. It was as though he was trying to understand how someone could genuinely believe those words. Finally, he spoke. "Maria..." My name sounded unusually gentle coming from him. "Who convinced you that love is something you have to earn?" I blinked. "I..." The question caught me completely off guard. "I don't know." "No?" He folded his arms loosely across his chest. "Then let me ask you something else." I nodded hesitantly. "When was the last time someone complimented you?" I opened my mouth to answer. Nothing came out. My mind searched desperately. Days. Weeks. Months. Years. I couldn't think of a single time. Seeing my silence, Damien's expression grew heavier. "And when was the last time someone thanked you?" Again... Nothing. He sighed quietly. "Maria, you've spent so long surrounded by people w

The academy grounds were unusually busy. Students clustered in small groups, their conversations carrying across the courtyard. Normally, I would have lowered my head and hurried past them. Today... I found myself listening. "...I heard the future Alpha is leaving for Black Ridge." "They say there's a dispute at the border." "I also heard Young Master Draven is accompanying him." "Really? I thought Alpha Damien was suspended." "So did I." "I guess the pack still needs him." The conversations grew fainter as I walked away. So... He really was leaving. For reasons I couldn't explain, my chest tightened. Part of me felt relieved. If Damien left, then no one could accuse me of bringing him more trouble. No jealous girls. No ugly rumors. No whispers that I was trying to get close to the heir. Maybe... His life would become easier once I disappeared from it. The thought should have comforted me. Instead, it hurt. I tightened my grip on my bag.
