Chapter 2

Author: Six Dollars
Mia did not expect that from me.

She took off the necklace and placed it on the coffee table slowly.

“If you want to take it, just do so.”

I did not move.

She added, “What does it matter if you want to take it? The person he wants to see the most is still me.”

I was not hurt by what she said. It was just a pity party that she had thrown for herself.

I stood up.

“I’ll leave them with you for now. Don’t lose them.”

Mia frowned.

“What do you mean?”

I said, “Someone will look into this later.”

I walked toward the entrance, and my phone rang again.

It was a call from Joe.

I answered.

He immediately asked, “Aria, what are you doing at Bayfront Apartment?”

I turned around to look at Mia.

She was looking down at her phone as she typed.

She acted fast.

I asked Joe, “How do you know that?”

He paused.

“Mia said that there’s a strange woman who’s harassing her. I guess it’s you.”

I said, “I'm no stranger. You gifted her jewelry, so she should know about me.”

He was quiet.

Then, he sounded like he was suppressing his anger. “It’s a gift set for a client. Don’t overthink it.”

“Client?”

“She’s helping promote East Shipping Corporation. She’s basically a business partner.”

I laughed.

“She’s a business partner, yet you left specific remarks to not let any family members retrieve the item?”

Joe said coldly, “Aria, don’t make me deal with your emotions when I’m away on the ship.”

I hung up on him.

At night, his mother, Mary Anderson, came over.

She rushed in. She did not even take off her shoes when she entered my house.

“You went to look for Mia?”

I was making dinner in the kitchen.

“Did Joe tell you?”

Mary tossed her bag onto the couch.

“He’s very anxious. Of course, he told me! Aria, why are you acting so immature?”

“My husband gave another woman jewelry, and you think I’m the immature one?”

Mary’s face fell.

“Joe’s a ship captain, and he has many business dealings. It’s normal to have some unavoidable situations when he’s working. You’re at home every day. Of course you wouldn’t know how hard it is out there!”

I took out a copy of the logbook and placed it on the dining table.

“Is it that unavoidable that he has to purchase all these?”

Mary glanced at it without reading it.

“It’s just a jewelry set. Do you even need it? If you like it, I’ll get Joe to buy you one when he’s back.”

I said, “I just need him to be honest.”

Mary slammed the table.

“What did he lie to you about? He gave you all his hard-earned money. You can stay here because he’s working on the ship!”

I looked at her.

The deposit for this house was paid by my late father.

I was the one who furnished and renovated the house.

Joe was away at sea for most of the time. He could not even recall what color our curtains were.

Mary saw that I was not responding, so she thought that I had given in.

“Apologize to Mia tomorrow, and this will be the end of this matter. Don’t affect Joe’s promotion to general captain.”

I plated my dinner.

“I’m not going to apologize.”

Mary’s hands were trembling in rage.

“Who do you think you are? You have such a glamorous status only because of him. Who are you without him?”

I put down my plate.

“I’ll find my own identity again.”

When the staff member stamped the papers, Joe shut his eyes. After the divorce was finalized, I took off the old wedding ring. It had our initials engraved inside and looked a little worn. Joe’s breathing became heavier when he saw that. “Can you give the ring to me?” I said, “No.” After I left, I sold the ring to a pawn shop. It did not sell for much. I used that money to buy a new dress for Helen. When she received it, she immediately teared up. “Aria, I can’t take this!” “Please accept it as a congratulatory gift for Luke’s temporary assignment as the captain of Horizon Ship.” She whispered, “He didn’t want to get promoted just as a replacement for Captain Anderson.” I said, “He’s not. The company is aware of his capability.” Very soon, East Shipping Corporation came out with a statement. Joe lost the opportunity to be promoted to general captain and was sent away for six months of training. He would no longer be the captain of Horizon Ship.Mia had to

I agreed to that. After all, it was only thirty days. He sent me gifts every single day. He brought me food, flowers, medicine, and souvenirs. I returned every single thing. On the seventh day, he waited for me at the hotel lobby. “Aria, I was a jerk in the past.”I walked past him, and he followed. “Didn’t you always wish for me to arrive home safely? Now that I’m here, you won’t even look at me.”I paused. “Maybe I wished for you to be safe, but that doesn’t mean I want to take you back.”His face turned pale. “Do you really not love me anymore?”I did not answer. I had loved him for so long that I could no longer remember when I had stopped loving him. Mia did not give up. She posted long articles on her social media account. She claimed that she was just a partner promoting the port, but she was wrongfully attacked by the captain’s wife. She cropped the jewelry from her photo and only revealed her swollen eyes. The comments were vilifying me. [Eve

Joe’s lips quivered. “I didn’t ask her to submit this.” Ben said, “The account belongs to you, and the verification code was sent to your personal phone number.” Joe fell quiet. I looked at him. “Did you use my name to rent out Bayfront Apartment?”“Mia said she couldn’t find a place to rent, so I wanted to help her just for that.” I laughed. “By using my name?”He lowered his head. “I thought it was just a few things. I thought no one would look into it.”Ben’s face darkened. “Captain Anderson, please be mindful of your words. The allowance for family members is a part of the project expense, not your personal bank account.” It was then that Joe realized he had messed up. He looked at me and lowered his voice. “Aria, I really didn’t mean to hurt you.” I asked, “Really? Did you think of me when you did all this?”He did not answer. The answer was already clear. Someone opened the door to the meeting room. Another staff member led Mia in. When she saw

“She was the one who wanted to meet me.”“She was sobbing. She told me you threatened her with a voice recording.” I pulled out my phone and played the voice recording from the cafe. When Mia said that Joe no longer loved me, Joe’s face fell. When the recording went on to repeat what Mia had said about her not needing to do anything to win Joe over, he whispered, “Turn that off.” I stopped playing the recording. He sat on the couch silently, and I continued to pack my bags. He suddenly asked, “Where are you going?”“I’m moving out.” “This is our home.” “Soon, it won’t be.” He stood up. “Aria, I’ve told you I’ll cut Mia off. What else do you want?”I shut my suitcase. “You can’t handle her.” “I can.” “You won’t be able to leave her.”His face paled. His phone started ringing. It was a call from Mia. Joe stared at his phone but did not answer it. The phone stopped ringing before it rang again. He still did not answer it. I walked out with my suitcase

“I know you have the right to look into the ship, but can you withdraw the request?”“You never asked about what my father left me. Now, when you’re in trouble and can finally see what I’m capable of, you need my help? It’s too late.”Joe put the notice down. He looked genuinely afraid for the first time. “Aria, you can’t continue this investigation.”I asked, “Are you afraid of not getting promoted?”“No.”He paused. “I’m afraid it’ll affect the whole crew.” He walked over and grabbed my shoulders. “Listen to me. I’ll get rid of Mia and take everything back. You have to withdraw the request.” I asked, “After I withdraw it, will you continue using my stamp for authorization purposes?” He looked defeated. “I was wrong.” It was the first time he admitted his mistake. However, it was not because he had hurt me. It was because I was a threat to him. Mia requested to meet me. We met at a cafe near Bayfront Apartment. She was not wearing the necklace, but she w

That night, I went to the guest room. Joe stood before my door. “Aria, let’s not sleep in separate bedrooms.” I made the bed. “When you’re away for ten months, I slept alone anyway.” He was at a loss for words. After a while, he softened the tone of his voice and said, “I’ll get Mia to return the jewelry.”“They’re dirty.” “I’ll buy you new ones.” “There’s no need.” He walked in and tried to grab the blanket from my hands. I avoided him. He looked angry. “What else do you want? I’m already giving in a lot.” I said, “I want a divorce.”He stared at me. “Even if you have the right to investigate the matter, we’ve been married for six years. Do you have to burn all bridges like this?”I fluffed my pillows. “I don’t wish to repeat myself.” He snorted. He still thought I was being unreasonable. “This is how the world works. Do you think you can change everything just because you’re angry?”I ignored him. Joe saw that I had made up my mind, so he stopped
