Chapter 7

Author: Bear Ridge Hound
All eyes turned to me as I was finishing my cigarette.

I flicked it neatly into the trash can.

“Esteemed Mr. Ward, what prompted your acquisition of Bennett Group?”

“How did you lie low for so many years before taking over the business world overnight?”

“Where did you secure the ten billion dollars needed to acquire Bennett Group?”

“Mr. Ward, Mr. Ward, Mr. Ward…”

The barrage of questions was incessant, and I calmly addressed each of them.

Ivy and Zachary, however, were utterly dumbfounded and were pushed into a corner by the crowd.

“It’s fake! It has to be fake!”

Zachary was shaking his head repeatedly.

“He’s just a kept man! What right does he have to acquire Bennett Group?!”

Watching me in the center of the spotlight, Ivy sank deeper into doubt.

In the world of business, she would never allow this kept man to stand above her.

This was worse than death to her.

Just then, the media noticed her stunned expression, and they turned to her, asking how she felt about her compa

Overnight, Bennett Group was rebranded as Ward Group. The other companies belonging to me and my family were all listed as subsidiaries of Ward Group.Within just one month, Ward Group secured nearly a thousand international partnerships.Unlike Ivy, I was never someone fond of networking.Once Ward Group had secured its foothold domestically, I entrusted all of my business operations to others. As for me, I returned to my hometown to savor the life I wanted. Before I left, I met Ivy one last time.“Julian, I know I was wrong. Can we go back to how things were?”Standing there, heavily pregnant with teary eyes, she begged me to remarry her.Never had I ever seen her humbled herself like this before.Perhaps, she truly regretted it.Alas, it was all too late.Forcing myself to stay calm and hold my temper, I said, “You’re carrying another man’s child. How am I supposed to marry you? You don’t really think I’m foolish enough to be someone else’s fall guy, do you?”To my sur

As Ivy spoke, she pulled out a pregnancy test report from her bag.I couldn’t imagine what kind of miserable ending I would’ve met if I hadn’t discovered her chat history with Zachary that day.“Fine,” I said coldly. “For the sake of the child, I’ll go back with you.”I gave a cold laugh.I willingly stepped into this game. Since you all wanted to play me, I’d play along. We’d see who’d outplay whom in the end.Autumn understood my intention after I gave her a knowing glance, and she ceased her confrontation with Ivy.Ivy’s lips curled up into a smile.“I just know you treat me the best, Julian. The investors for our last project pulled out. Help me figure something out.”“Leave it to me,” I said with a faint smile.Within a week, Ivy secured an unprecedented mega project for Bennett Group. Her position in the company rose rapidly, almost on par with the chairman.Soon, the moniker “Magnate Bennett” for Ivy resounded across the nation.Riding the high, Ivy decided to hold a

Ivy’s voice crackled with anger.“Ivy, I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”I yawned and couldn’t be bothered with her anymore. Just as I was about to hang up, her furious voice came through the line again.“Right after we argued, the most important partner that Bennett Group had assigned me to handle had suddenly pulled out. You dare say you had nothing to do with it?”“You’ve said it. It was assigned to you, so what does it have to do with me?” I asked coldly. However, Ivy replied as if it were only natural, “Haven’t all my business projects been handed to you before? If something goes wrong this time, who else should I blame but you?”Absurd!I couldn’t fathom the logic behind her words.“Ivy, we’re divorced. Stop harassing me with these calls.”“Jul—”I hung up on her. After house viewing with Autumn, we watched a romance movie in the evening before returning home.Unexpectedly, Ivy had tracked me down here!Seeing Autumn by my side when I returned, a flicker

That same night, I packed up everything and moved out of the home that once belonged to us.I would never return. Let that place bury the naive, laughable love I once believed in.I drove back to my hometown that night.Since I had told them in advance, my parents had left the lights on for me.“Julian, why are you alone? Why isn’t Ivy with you?”My mother glanced around, and indeed, I was the only one stepping out of the car.I signed, my eyes betraying my exhaustion.“Mom, Ivy and I are getting a divorce.”“What?!” My parents looked at each other in shock. My father quickly spoke up, “It’s better that way. I could see it in that girl’s eyes that she was full of ambition and calculation.“Being with someone like that long-term is dangerous.”My parents had disapproved of my marriage to Ivy from the start, but I had foolishly clung to the belief that we were in love. Alas, I only realized now that I had been deceiving myself all along.“Come on in, let me cook you a bow

  • Post-Divorce Remorse   Chapter 3

I no longer had any idea what significance I held in Ivy’s eyes.In the eight years of our marriage, I had never seen her look so worried.Back when I was hit by a car and broke my leg saving her, she didn’t utter a single word of care. She even scolded me for not watching where I was going and that I deserved it.Yet now, Zachary merely pretended to take a tumble and she panicked, immediately dialing 911.Perhaps she genuinely cared for Zachary. However, I no longer wish to delve into it.“Ivy, the divorce papers will be delivered by my lawyer tomorrow. This is goodbye.”With that, I turned and walked away without looking back. The wind chill outside was bone-piercing.My heart felt hollow, as if I had lost a harbor to return to.That night, Ivy came home completely drunk and stumbled into the house in the wee hours.“Zacky, hurry, let’s go to the bathroom…”Ivy threw herself into my arms the moment I opened the door, as her overpowering perfume stung my nose. She kissed
