The cold air from the air conditioner jolted me awake.

"Mom, the power's out! What do we do? I don't know how to fix it!"

My son, Shawn Giddey, asked anxiously.

I calmly turned on the flashlight on my phone.

Shawn had just graduated from medical school and was interning at the hospital where I worked.

In my previous life, when the power went out, he went to report to the hospital higher-ups, and I stayed behind to connect to the backup power.

But even after I got into trouble, he never came back.

"Mom!" When he saw that I wasn't moving, he stomped his feet anxiously.

"Why are you just sitting there? If the kids die, we're done for!"

Clearly, he understood the gravity of the situation. Then why didn't he come back in my previous life?

Several babies sensed the change in temperature and started to wail.

The children on ventilators began to turn pale, their lips turning blue.

Although my heart ached, I knew that nothing would happen in the short term, so I feigned indifference.

Shawn became even more agitated. He yelled at me, "You're the head of pediatrics, how can you be so cold-blooded?!"

If it were before, I would have gone to check the children's conditions and argued back.

But having gone through the experiences of my previous life, my mindset had long changed.

After I calmed down, I noticed that, although he looked anxious on the surface, there was a hint of cunning and triumph in his eyes.

Could he really be involved in setting me up?

I shrugged and replied nonchalantly, "What do you want me to do? There are over 100 children here. Do you want me to push the incubators out one by one?"

Shawn looked unhappy, and his tone grew more impatient.

"You're the head of pediatrics, who will save them if you don't? You can't just watch them die!"

I helplessly pointed to the crying children, raised my eyebrows, and looked at him.

"It would take a long time to push all those children out. Maybe after we saved a few, the rest would be dead. Tell me, who should I save first and who should I save last? Rather than being caught in that dilemma, I might as well let all of them die, then wait for the parents to beat me to death."

Before he could react, I pulled him down to sit with me and showed him a calm smile.

"At least I get to die with my son."

Shawn stood up and shook off my hand violently.

"You're insane. I can't believe you want me to die with you. You don't deserve to be my mother!"

With that, he ran away so fast it was as if a ghost was chasing him.

As I watched him open the door and run away in panic, a chill spread throughout my body.

I had loved him for over twenty years, but he abandoned me to escape by himself, yet he had the gall to say that I did not deserve to be his mother.

More and more children started crying. Their cries grew louder and louder, engulfing the ICU like a flood.

Yet, I merely stared at the tightly shut door while smiling serenely.

The police took Ian and Shawn away. I went back to the PICU and said a few words to the doctor who came to take over, then went home to change clothes.Having been married for more than 20 years, I never thought I would end up as the only person in this home.Sitting on the living room couch, looking at the empty home, I couldn't help but shed a few tears.Suddenly, I saw a shadow in the kitchen.Someone had broken into my home!Could it be the thief from some time ago?No, the interior was neat and tidy, with no signs of being rummaged through. It was definitely not a thief. Then it could only be Sandra.Once I figured that out, I wasn't afraid anymore."Come out, Sandra. I saw you. You want my husband, my house, and my money, right? I'll give it all to you; see if you can take it."A woman walked out of the shadows in the kitchen. She was holding a knife and had a smile on her face."I underestimated you, Joyce. Not only did you send Ian and Shawn to prison, you want to ta

Shawn was utterly dumbfounded. He never could have thought that his painstaking efforts to make sure I was arrested would end up dragging his own father down.He muttered to himself, "Why? Why is this happening? I was so close. I could have, could have been free..."I released my clenched fists and decided to try to talk some sense into him. After all, he was my own son, and it was really hard for me to give up on him completely."Shawn, you've always been a good kid. You were always at the top of your class and I hardly have to worry about you. How did you end up like this? Look at yourself. You can't distinguish right from wrong anymore. You've become selfish and self-serving. You would resort to any means to achieve your goals. Freedom? Is your so-called freedom worth killing more than 100 lives for? Is your freedom the only thing that's valuable? What about their lives? I'm so disappointed in you…"Suddenly, his eyes turned bloodshot, and he roared at me."A good kid? Isn't th

In my previous life, I was nailed to the pillar of shame as a "suspect" by these inexplicable fingerprints. The police detained me for 48 hours but couldn't charge me with a concrete murder crime, so they released me.It was then that Shawn posted that video online. The enraged parents dragged me to a secluded alley, where they beat and tortured me for ten hours, watching me die in agony. But I had found the fingerprint stickers and the tools to tamper with the thermostat in Ian's pocket. How could my fingerprints still get on the thermostat?Where did the problem lie…?Shawn glared at me fiercely, as if I had killed his mother.Forcing back the bitterness in my heart, I calmly asked him, "You said my fingerprint was on the thermostat. Which finger and on which part of the thermostat?"He arrogantly turned his head away. "Where else could it be? Next to the power cable at the bottom of the thermostat. The police found your thumbprint. What else do you have to say?"Ah, I see...

Then, I looked at Ian coldly."Not only do I know there's a problem with the surveillance, I also know that you want to kill your wife for insurance money. Am I right, Dr. Giddey?"His pupils shook, and he looked at me with wide eyes, "You..."The police urged me gently, "Dr. Luther, we know that you're upset because Dr. Giddey framed you, but you can't turn around and frame him back just to get revenge. We can't allow this."I calmly pulled up the surveillance footage at home and let the officers watch it.While they watched, I explained."Some time ago, several of our neighbors were robbed. You can check the police records to verify that I'm not lying."Our family of three are all doctors, and we often work night shifts. In order to ensure the safety of our home, I installed a security camera at the door."I haven't had the chance to tell my husband and my son about this. After all, I was busy at work, and I just wanted to sleep when I get home."But just now, when one of th

Ian, now sweating profusely, made an excuse to leave, saying there was a surgery in his department. He was clearly trying to slip away. However, these officers were all veterans. Seeing his behavior, they already figured out what was going on.They reached out to stop him and warned him sternly, "Dr. Giddey, we haven't managed to acquire the evidence you claimed yet. Why don't you come back to the police station with us first."Ian panicked. His eyes darted around and he suddenly shouted, "Even if the children are all alive, the power was out for several hours. Who knows what she did inside? Maybe she forcibly injected the sleeping children with sedatives!"The PICU has regulations that if there are children who cry incessantly and refuse to cooperate with treatment, a small amount of sedative can be injected.Otherwise, it is easy for the needle to bend or for the child to pull out the ventilator during the treatment process.Administering sedatives within the appropriate limits

The babies lay in the incubators, their faces rosy and their breathing even. Each one slept soundly, like a little angel.I looked at them with relief, knowing that my efforts to connect to the power of the neighboring ICU had not been in vain. The older children who slept in beds with ventilators attached to them smiled at me.One little girl's condition had improved significantly. She didn't need a ventilator anymore and could speak freely."Dr. Luther, thank you for healing us. You even tell us bedtime stories to help us sleep. Can I call you Mommy too? Daddy said Mommy has gone to heaven. When do you think I can go to heaven to see Mommy?"The parents, who had been silent, suddenly burst into tears. They ran past me and surged into the PICU like a tide. They quickly found their children. Some sobbed quietly next to their baby's incubator, some cried with their child in bed, and others bowed to me in gratitude.I calmly waved my hand; there was no need for that.I helped the
