Quincy walked quietly to the Luna’s office. It had been two weeks since the explosion, and every morning before sunrise, they met in her office to discuss the investigation and pack matters. Then they divided up the tasks and went on with their day. Emma spent the first few hours at the hospital doting on the Alpha and make sure that he was receiving the best possible care. As the Beta, it was natural for him to fall into place assisting the Luna, but this morning when he opened the office door, he was hit with another unexpected burden. Her scent hit him in the gut and he was left breathing heavily in the doorway. Emma gave him a quizzical look as he stood there, gathering his thoughts. “Is everything okay Beta?” Quincy closed the door behind him and sat across from her. “Of course. I am wondering though if you have been anywhere this morning other than your office?” Emma sat the file that she was reading and narrowed her eyes, “no, why?” Quincy cleared his throat, “I’m not sure ho
Emma sat in the hospital room with a calm exterior, but inside she was falling apart. None if this was right. Her mate should not be in that bed, possibly never waking up. She should not be facing the possibility of raising a baby alone. She wasn’t even ready to have kids! Negative thoughts filled her mind as her eyes became unfocused. She could hear the doctor’s voice, but she didn’t have a clue what he was saying. Her mind drew up memories and created scenarios that felt real. She was physically in the room with Quincy and Dr. Adams, but mentally she was very far away. She urged herself to focus. She knew that there were too many responsibilities resting on her shoulders for her to have the luxury of falling apart, but she just wanted to leave it all for someone else to deal with. She imagined walking away from the pack duties if Daryl didn’t make it. Even if he didn’t die, would she want to spend the rest of her life taking care of the pack without her mate?
Quincy waited in the hallway between Alpha Daryl’s room and Luna Emma’s room. He linked Leo to meet with him in an hour. He would make sure that Emma was always protected. Then he decided to check on Ivan. ‘Hey man, how are you doing,’ he asked through their link. ‘I’m good. I think in a few weeks I will be ready to train again. I’m stiff and need to get these muscles moving.’ Quincy was glad to hear that Ivan was going so well. They were worried that he would be paralyzed, but their quick response time had allowed the doctors to repair some of the damage. After that, his natural werewolf healing fixed the rest. ‘That’s great. If you’re feeling up to it, I’m having a meeting with Leo in an hour and would like your input. I know you won’t be able to help physically, bit another set of eyes on thing is always helpful.’ Ivan was a good warrior, and he would be the perfect person to manage the security o
Emma tucked her blouse into her skirt and checked her reflection in the floor length mirror on her closet door. She wanted to look happy and confident, so she chose a cream-colored top with a light floral-patterned skirt and pink flats. Today she really needed to convince the pack that everything was going to be fine. She didn’t want them to worry about her ability to handle things. If they didn’t feel confident in her ability to lead them, someone may get brave enough to challenge her. Word spreads quickly, and someone from outside the pack could challenge her as well. She was confident in her fighting skills, but she didn’t want to fight while pregnant. She ran her hand through her shoulder length brown hair, wishing that she had better skills at fixing it. Today it was just down and straight. She didn’t want to look like she put in too much effort, but she would like to be one of those women who always had a cute hairstyle. Sighing, she linked Quincy. ‘I’m ready whenever you are.’
Quincy packed his bag with quiet anticipation. The last two weeks had been hard for him; he felt pulled in two different directions lately. He was glad to be part of the investigation with Alpha Liu's team, but he worried about Emma the entire time. He knew she was much more capable than he gave her credit for, but he didn't like feeling as if he was abandoning her to take care of everything on her own. He was worried about how the stress of it all would affect her and the baby. So far the pack hadn't had any major problems, but there was always the chance that someone would see this situation as an opportunity to take control and challenge Emma. Without Alpha Daryl or him there, she would have to fight the challenger herself. Quincy shuddered at the thought. He threw his pack over his shoulder and shook hands with the rest of the team. "You guys are amazing. Great work. I will be happy to report back to the Luna that we have captured three men involved. I suspect she will want to c
Emma packed a small bag and sat at her computer. She was going to do some digging before she left to interview these men that had been captured by Alpha Liu’s team. She felt overwhelmed with the need to know if this was her fault. If it was, she didn’t know what she would do to fix the fact that she had made her mate a target. She also didn’t know what she would do if it wasn’t her fault. Right now she was focused on one thing alone and that was discovering where the threat came from. Once she had the answer to that, she would figure out the next step. Her keys clicked as she furiously typed. “I need to be two steps ahead, and I don’t like the unknown,” she muttered to herself. An alarm went off on her phone and she closed her computer. She would have to do more digging later. Now it was time to go. She grabbed her small bag and went downstairs to the front entrance. Beta Quincy was there waiting for her.“Are you sure that is a
Quincy paced in front of the door, wondering how much longer she was going to be. He could pick up faint noises, but the room was almost soundproof. He didn’t think she was in danger, but she had been in there too long. As he debated interrupting her, the door finally opened. Emma stood in the doorway covered in blood. Quincy rushed up to her, “Luna, are you okay?” Emma nodded, “It’s not my blood. I left them alive. I think I have all of the information we are going to get from those three. I will leave them for the team to deal with as they see fit. Leave one alive with instructions to go back to his leader with a message.” Quincy nodded, “Okay. What do you want him to say?” Emma looked at him with glowing yellow eyes. She was on the edge of shifting and at her most dangerous. He could feel the anger rolling off of her. “Tell them that the Luna of Broken Paw Pack is coming for them and not even Hell is a safe hiding place.” Quincy stepped away from her as she shifted into wolf form. H
Quincy followed Emma up several flights of stairs and through a maze of hallways. Finally, she stopped and entered the room without knocking. An older couple was sitting at a desk talking quietly. When she approached they looked up, "Emma, we weren't expecting you. What has happened?' Emma hugged the man and the woman. "Mom, Dad, this is my Beta Quincy. I came to discuss with the King an attack on my mate. It appears that he has been targeted because he is a pure lycan." Her parents looked surprised. "It's nice to meet you, Beta Quincy. Come and have a seat with us. Tell us everything you know." Emma and Quincy told them about the attack and the investigation. When they were done, her parents were thoughtful. "Well, I don't think it's a good idea for you to be in the middle of this in your condition. How far along are you?" Emma blushed but told her parents about the baby. She shared with them her fears of Alpha Daryl not waking up before the birth. "Don't worry dear. You are strong.
Emma sat typing at her computer as she waited for her assistant to arrive, and her phone notification pinged. She checked her messages and read what Quincy had sent her. ‘Do you want me to go to your appointment with you today?’ She smiled softly and replied, ‘You don’t have to come, but it would be nice to have someone there with me.’ Today Dr. Adams was going to do her first ultrasound and she hoped to find out the gender of the baby. She only had six weeks left of her pregnancy and she couldn’t believe how fast it was going. Veronica interrupted her thoughts, “Good morning, Luna.” She sat at the desk across from Emma with her notepad. “Good morning. I will be out of the office for the rest of the day. I’m going to grab some lunch and then I have an appointment with Dr. Adams this afternoon. Please have the security schedule on my desk in the morning for Beta Quincy and me to review and approve. I also need a list of all active Lunas and possible guest speakers on topics that you th
