Chapter 4

Author: Tiny Mess
At the desk, Lionel was still holding his phone. Cindy had probably just messaged him.

"If a senior employee assigns you these tasks, she definitely has her reasons. As a newcomer, what's wrong with doing a little extra work? Can't even handle that much?"

"No, I can handle hard work. I just don't want to be targeted for no good reason."

The moment I finished speaking, a loud bang made me jump.

Lionel and Cindy really were family, because they slammed the desk and stood up in exactly the same way.

"What are you trying to say? You think that Cindy is deliberately making things difficult for you over a drumstick? You're way too narrow-minded. I need to seriously reconsider whether you're right for our company."

I had not expected him to threaten my permanent position, so I sighed helplessly. "Mr. Stone, I just think that since the company has cleaning staff, there's really no need to assign an extra person to do these things. Plus, I still have data organization and quarterly reports to work on–"

Lionel impatiently cut me off, "If you can't finish your work, that's a competency issue! You know full well your workload is heavy, yet you have time to come here and complain about your coworker?

"I'm warning you: there will be executives from headquarters coming to inspect at this week's quarterly presentation. If you screw up, forget about getting hired permanently–just pack your bags and get out!"

I clenched my teeth, but in the end I said nothing. I lowered my head and went back to the office.

Cindy was sitting there with her feet up, munching on snacks. The second she saw my frustrated expression, she grinned.

"Oh my, why so down? Let me guess... Your little complaint didn't work out?"

Stephanie was afraid I would go and argue with Cindy again, so she pulled me to my desk in a hushed voice.

"Don't go over there, Theodore! She's gloating! Let's just ignore her!"

I nodded gratefully. In truth, I had not planned on dealing with Cindy anyway. I would rather spend that time focusing on work.

According to Lionel, the presentation was the day after tomorrow, which meant I had to have all the reports ready by tomorrow.

Coming in early and staying late meant I was basically working overtime anyway. The only problem was that Cindy left her mess everywhere these past two days, wasting a lot of my time cleaning up.

In her eyes, my willingness to clean was a sign of surrender to her "authority."

"See that? You're still too green to mess with me!"

My eyes never left the screen, and only after I had finished revising the report according to my supervisor's notes did I shift my gaze to her.

"You might be mistaken, Cindy. I'm cleaning your workspace because I'm a neat freak and can't stand filthy habits. I'd suggest you pay more attention to personal hygiene. After all, the office doesn't belong to just you."

With that, I shut down my computer. I ignored Cindy's shrieking and cursing behind me, grabbed my bag, and left.

My work was done, so why would I stay late with her?

But when I opened my computer the next day, I froze in shock. The folder that had contained my reports was now completely empty.

Stephanie saw me go stiff and asked with concern, "What's wrong, Theodore? Are you feeling sick?"

"My reports..."

Before I could finish, Lionel's voice came from outside the office door.

"Well, we were all wondering which executive would be visiting today, but I didn't expect you to come personally..."

Cindy looked like she had been waiting for this moment, putting on an exaggerated expression right as they pushed the door open.

"Theodore! Did you lose the quarterly reports?! Oh my goodness! How could you make such a mistake?"

Cindy's shrill voice echoed through the entire office.

Due to her outburst, everyone turned to look at me.

Lionel had just walked in, and his eyes widened with rage. He stormed straight over to my desk.

"Theodore, is what Cindy is saying true? How could you make such a mistake? Pack your things and get out right now!"

"I..."

I had just opened my mouth to explain when Cindy cut in.

"What?! Some people pretend to stay late every day and act hardworking. And the result? Can't even turn in a single report! Did you lose it, or did you just never do it at all?"

Though it was phrased as a question, she did not give me time to answer and pulled a flash drive out of her pocket.

"Good thing I could tell you were unreliable, so I prepared the presentation in advance! Ms. Taylor, please don't worry. Even though pregnancy has been so hard on me, I always take my work seriously. Today's presentation will absolutely satisfy you!"

Cindy dramatically touched her belly, trying to emphasize her effort and sacrifice.

However, the chairperson at the door was not looking at her. Instead, she gazed at me with an almost amused expression.

"Mr. Lloyd, is everything she's saying true?"

I had no idea where Howard had gotten the knife from. Maybe he had swiped it from my coffee table, or maybe he had brought it with him.By the time I came to my senses, I was already in an ambulance. What had just happened was complete chaos.Howard had come at me with the knife, and I had dodged just in time, so it only slashed my arm. When he tried to stab me a second time, the food delivery driver and the building security team arrived at the perfect moment. They tackled both of them to the ground. Before anyone even had to call the police, Sarah came back, too. While I was getting into the ambulance, she blamed herself for working late and ordering delivery."It was barely two minutes after I placed the order when you said the food arrived. I knew right away something was wrong!""It's fine. I just need a few stitches."The wound actually was not that deep. It was just long, so it looked worse than it was. Calling an ambulance had been a bit excessive. However, Sarah did n

I turned and saw the aggressor–a peculiar-looking man. The kicker? The woman hiding behind him was all too familiar."Cindy?"Unlike this morning, her face had obvious bruises, clearly from being beaten. Seeing her condition, I immediately guessed the man's identity.I could not care less about my injury and glared at Cindy's husband, Howard Newman. "You dared to lay hands on a woman who's six months pregnant? Are you even human?"She lost her job, cutting off our household income. Isn't it normal for me to beat her?"As he spoke, he looked like he was about to hit Cindy again, but the person I had just been defending pointed at me."It's him! Honey, he's the one who screwed me over! He threatened Uncle Lionel into suspending me. It wasn't my fault... It's all because of him!""Damn it! Just looking at him, I can tell he's some rich pretty boy who sticks his nose where it doesn't belong!"Before he had even finished speaking, he swung another punch at my face. Since I was a man

This time, I was not going to spare Lionel's feelings. Well, not that he had any credit left with me to begin with."Mr. Stone, after observing her during this time, I have serious doubts about Cindy's work capabilities. I'll be conducting a thorough investigation into whether her hiring complied with company standards. If I find evidence of anyone doing favoritism or nepotism, I will hold them accountable.""Well..."My pointed words put Lionel in a tough spot, and he looked to Sarah as if pleading for help.Sarah acted like she had not seen a thing and simply took my hand. "That's settled, then. If you cause any more trouble, expect to hear from my lawyers."After throwing that line at Cindy, she led me out of the office.Even after we got in the car, Sarah's tense expression never eased up.I reached out and poked her furrowed brow. "What brought you here today?""I just got back to the office when they said we were doing a branch inspection. I wanted to surprise you, so I c

Being yelled at finally alerted Cindy to how badly the situation had turned against her. Once she understood Lionel could not protect her today, she turned to Sarah and burst into tears."Ms. Taylor, you have no idea how vicious Theodore is! He has no compassion at all! He knew I was pregnant, but he didn't show me even a shred of kindness or care! That violates our company's employee welfare policy!"She got more worked up as she spoke. In front of everyone, she reached out and shoved me.I had not expected her to actually get physical, and she caught me completely off guard, but then I saw the extremely stern Sarah reach out to steady me.It all happened so suddenly that many people did not even process what had occurred. They only saw Sarah ask me gently, "Honey, are you okay?"My cover was blown again. In that instant, I witnessed what total silence meant. The entire office fell dead quiet, and if a pin had dropped right then, I definitely could have heard it.Sarah whipped

"What do you think?" With a tired sigh, I reached into my bag, took out my real company badge, and put it around my neck while everyone stared in shock. The moment Cindy saw the words [HR Compliance Inspector], she stumbled back two steps."What?! Weren't you just some regular intern?"Yes, I was listed as an intern at this branch office. However, at headquarters, I had been assigned here undercover as an inspector to review labor compliance and management practices.I did not bother responding to her stammering and went straight to my computer to open my backup files. Then, I took the flash drive from her hand and projected both reports onto the office screen. The identical PowerPoints confirmed that Cindy had stolen my work.I walked toward Cindy, whose face had gone dark. There was no triumph in my voice, only calm. "You were right about one thing: I'm pretty good at tattling and reporting. Next time you do something like this, remember to find and delete all the backups too.
