“Watch me.”

The words were still hanging between us when Damien moved.

He didn’t walk away. He pulled his phone from his pocket, made a single call, and spoke in that low, flat voice that made people on the other end of the line straighten their spines.

“Dana. Elena Harper’s transfer request is permanently closed. Effective today she reports directly to me on the east-wing project. Move her desk to the glass office adjacent to mine. I want it done before the end of the day.”

He hung up without

The second the elevator doors shut on him, guilt hit so hard I bent forward over his desk.I had thrown water on a woman in his office. I had made a scene. I had asked for distance and then lost my mind the moment someone else stepped into it wearing a dress and certainty. And underneath all of that, worse than all of that, sat the thing I still hadn’t said.I came here to tell him.Instead I gave him every reason to walk out.My eyes burned. I pressed the heel of my hand against them and dragged in a breath that shook on the way down. Then I ran.The executive floor felt endless in the wrong direction; glass, corridors, a turn I took too fast, a bank of elevators already closed. I hit the call button hard enough to hurt my finger and stood there whispering his name under my breath like an idiot, like the building might take pity and bring him back up. When the next car came I took it alone, stomach rising with the drop, hands clenched so tight my nails cut half-moons into my palms.

For one stupid second I thought he would say no.Not because I deserved it. Not because I had earned some public claim after asking for distance and then showing up late with a secret stuck in my throat. Damien looked at her. That was the first cut. Just the fact of his attention leaving my face and landing on the doorway where she stood, all bare legs and open intention, smiling like she had arrived on schedule.“You’re early,” he said.“I’m punctual,” Victoria corrected, and stepped fully inside. The dress moved with her like liquid money. “You said eight. I got bored of waiting in the car looking like this for no one.”She said looking like this the way some people said I missed you. A woman who liked him enough to risk being obvious. My hands went cold.Damien’s jaw tightened. “I’m in the middle of something.”Victoria’s eyes slid to me, soft and assessing, and whatever she saw made her mouth curve. “I can see that. Hello, Miss Harper. Working late again?”The politeness was wor

I came in with the decision already made, which should have made the day cleaner and instead made every hour feel like a countdown I couldn’t stop hearing.I was going to tell him.Not in a text. Not after another public humiliation. Not after another night of lying on my couch with my hand on my stomach and Marcus’s voice still under my skin and Victoria Hale’s silhouette glued to the inside of my eyelids. I was going to stay late, wait until the floor emptied, walk into his office like a person instead of a rumor, and say the sentence that had been living in me like a second pulse.I’m pregnant.Once I admitted it to myself as a plan, the building changed shape. Every glance at his glass office became heavier. Every time Victoria crossed the floor in that calm, expensive way of hers, the decision flinched and then hardened again. I had asked for distance. I had gotten it. Distance had not saved me. It had only given the rest of the world room to decide what Damien and I were without

I came in because not coming in would have looked like surrender. The floor already knew something had shifted. People were quieter when I passed, not with the old scandal hunger exactly, but with that newer, crueller politeness reserved for women who had lost the center of the story. Damien’s office was occupied. So was the conference room beside it. Through the glass I could see Victoria’s profile, the movement of her hands, the way she occupied the space next to him like it had always been reserved. No one had to announce it. The building performed understanding all by itself. He did not come out. He did not call my name across the floor. He did not send a message. He did not look up when I walked to my desk and sat down like a person still employed by the same company as him. That silence was different from the distance I had asked for. That silence had teeth. It said: you pushed, I stopped colliding with the door.I opened my laptop and stared at a file I had already read twice.

That pause ruined everything. It wasn’t long. It wasn’t a confession. It was just the absence of an immediate no, and my body treated it like proof. Damien stood on the plaza steps with the city moving behind him and Victoria’s perfume still ghosting the air, and for once he did not have the perfect line ready. In a man like him, hesitation was never empty. It was information.“How many?” I asked again.“Elena.”“How many late nights, Damien?”He dragged a hand down his face, then dropped it like the gesture had offended him. “You don’t get to invent a history from one sentence.”“I didn’t invent same place as last time. She said it. She said it like I was the interruption.”“She is a business partner.”“And I am what?” The question came out rawer than I intended. “The distance you were instructed to keep? The mess you visit when the building goes dark?”His eyes flashed. “Careful.”“Or what? You’ll put me in a car too? Different curb? Different order of priority?”“You asked for this

I should have turned around and left through the side doors.Instead I stood there like a woman glued to her own accident and watched Damien walk Victoria Hale across the lobby. His hand didn’t stay on her back the whole way. It didn’t need to. The damage was already in the posture; the lean of his shoulders toward her, the easy space she took beside him, the way the security guards looked at them and then very carefully looked at nothing. In this building, couples didn’t have to kiss. They only had to move like the argument was already over.My phone buzzed again in my hand.Damien: Elena. Where are you?I locked the screen. If I answered, I would say something I could not take back. If I didn’t answer, I could keep the fantasy that he was still the man from my kitchen, not this public arrangement in expensive lighting.Victoria stopped near the exit and turned to him, talking with her whole face. She had the kind of beauty that didn’t beg. It assumed. At one point she put her palm
