Emily walked closer and sat beside her. “Your dad is mature enough to know the kind of woman he wants in his life. I don’t think he will let anyone ruin his family or hurt you in any way.”

Sandra shook her head. “Yes, and that was what I expected from him. He's wise and mature enough to know what is best for his family. But I don't know what is happening to him. I think my dad is under her spell."

Emily burst out laughing before she could stop herself. “You mean a love spell?”

“Yes, and I’m serious,” Sandra said without smiling. "I'm suspecting that woman."

Emily wiped her eyes. “Sandra, come on. You don’t really believe that.”

“I do,” Sandra insisted. “She makes my dad agree to things he would normally never agree to. What hurts me most is that he always defends her even when she’s clearly wrong.”

Emily shook her head. “That’s not a spell. There's nothing like that." Emily countered. "Maybe you are misunderstanding some things."

Sandra scoffed. “No. I know what I feel. You need to see how she demands things from my dad and how he has them done without questions. She acts like she already owns this mansion."

Emily smiled softly. “You know... Men don’t always explain everything to their kids. There might be more going on you are not aware of.”

Sandra leaned back on her hands. “I don't care. I wish he wouldn’t marry her. Better if he never marries again.”

Emily glanced at her. “Don't say that. He needs a beautiful woman behind him. He has a lot of years ahead, and he's too handsome and charming to remain single. Just pray for him to get a nice woman."

"I wish he could get a woman that behaves like you. I will have peace of mind." Sandra said, and Emily smiled before asking, "Do you think he can get one?"

"That's why I want him to remain single forever if possible."

Emily reached out and squeezed her hand. “I understand your fear and everything. But he needs to get married."

Sandra stood up too. “If he ever gets married, it will never be that woman. Anyway, enough talk. Let’s go downstairs and prepare something together. I’m starving.”

Emily laughed. “Same. I haven't eaten today.”

They left the room chatting and laughing. The kitchen was painted white and very spacious.

Everything was arranged neatly, from the shiny countertops to the labeled spice jars. Sandra dropped her phone on the counter, tied her hair back, and wore her apron.

“Okay,” she said, clapping her hands once and heading towards the large refrigerator. “Let’s make something simple. Potato salad and fried chicken.”

Emily blinked. “Fried chicken? From scratch?”

“Yes,” Sandra replied while opening the fridge. “Stop being lazy.”

Emily laughed and sat on the long stool behind her. “I’m never lazy. You know, I've been looking forward to asking you why your dad doesn't have domestic workers. I’m surprised that even with this kind of house and money, your dad didn't employ any cook. I was expecting at least a cook and three house helps.”

Sandra smiled faintly and pulled out a sachet of potatoes. “Yes, we don’t have any.”

Emily frowned. “But why?”

Sandra paused, then continued washing the potatoes. “My dad hates domestic workers.”

Emily watched her for a moment before asking her, “Why did he hate them?”

Sandra sighed and turned off the tap. “One of the maids we had years ago poisoned my mom.”

Emily’s mouth gasped open. “What?”

“She was sentenced to life imprisonment,” Sandra said. "My mom died that same night.”

Emily felt her chest tighten. This was the first time Sandra was telling her about her mom's death. “Oh my God… That's so bad.”

Sandra shrugged lightly, as if trying to brush it off. “It was a long time ago when I was still little. After that, my dad fired every single domestic worker in the house. We only allow a cleaning company to come once a week. They clean and leave. No one stays.”

“And cooking?” Emily asked.

“My dad was doing the cooking until I was able to take over the kitchen.” Sandra replied. “He actually cooks very well.”

Emily shook her head slowly. “I wouldn't have believed he can actually cook. That's nice."

“Most people wouldn’t,” Sandra said as she began to peel the potatoes. “But that’s how it’s been.”

"It's okay." Emily said and moved closer. “Let me help.”

“Please,” Sandra handed her a knife. “You can cut the potatoes.”

Emily took the knife and started cutting the potatoes. Sandra moved to season the chicken. “You can wash the lettuce for the salad.”

They continued cooking, occasionally bumping into each other in the large kitchen.

After a while, Sandra leaned against the counter and looked up at Emily. “So… are you planning to go and apologize to Desmond?”

Emily paused what she was doing and looked up sharply. “Apologize?”

“Yes. Your father said you have to apologize to him. Are you going to do that?”

"Don't tell me you are thinking of convincing me to go back to that proud cheater and apologize to him." Emily said. "I will never apologize."

Her heart beat a little faster than it should have. He wasn't just looking at her; he was staring at her, and it wasn't a casual one. Apart from that, she could tell he had been staring for some time. She smiled lightly, thinking maybe he actually likes her. But immediately she remembered he was her best friend's father, the smile faded away, and she told herself she was just imagining things. Slowly and carefully, she looked up again, and this time, he was busy eating. She stared at him for some seconds and looked over at Sandra to know if she was looking at her. Her body relaxed when she saw she was busy with her own food. She stared at Vincent for some moments again and continued her food. Soon, Vincent finished his meal. He set his cutlery down and stood up. “Thank you, Emily,” he said. “I enjoyed your meal. You guys did a great job." "Thank you, sir." Emily said. "You are welcome. Keep it up. I'm sure going to enjoy this holiday." He stood up and left the room. Emily sta

Sandra laughed and shook her head. "Who said I was going to convince you? I will be the last person to tell you to apologize to him. On what ground? Listen, what you said is exactly what I expected from you. How can you be the one to apologize when he was the one who messed up? I won't even let you do that.” Emily let out a slow breath. “Exactly. I won't try it." “I was so angry when your dad was telling you to go to his house and apologize,” Sandra said. “Honestly, I wanted to shout at him. I was holding myself."Emily frowned. “I don’t actually blame my dad.”Sandra turned to her. “You don’t?”“Yes, I don't blame him.” Emily calmly replied. “The old man is scared. Desmond employed him. He's afraid that Desmond will fire him and stop giving him financial assistance. That fear controls everything he was saying.” Sandra shook her head. “Still, it’s wrong.” “It is,” Emily agreed. "We are like slaves to him, but not anymore. I won't let it continue." Sandra leaned against the counte

His voice sent chills down her spine. This was the first time he was calling her by her name and she loved it."Yes, sir. Emily. Good morning, sir." Emily greeted him politely while avoiding looking at his face.“How are you doing? It’s been a long time since I last saw you.”He calmly said with a smile. Emily hesitated for a second before she answered. “Yeah, it's been a while. I’m doing fine, sir.""I can see that with my eyes,” he said, nodding his head gently while admiring her. “Look at you. You have grown into a very beautiful lady."Emily felt her smile widen at his words. She wasn't expecting her formidable best friend's father to tell her sweet words like that. "Really?" Emily asked."Yeah," he replied. "I barely recognized you."“I didn't know I changed so much. Thanks for the compliments.” She replied softly and looked up at him with a smile she couldn't control before adding, “You are not looking bad either."Though this was not what she wanted to say. • Pregnant For My Best Friend's Formidable Father    Meeting her best friend dad

Soon, they got to the mansion. Sandra hopped out first, stretching her arms like she had just survived a two-day road trip when they only drove for thirty-five minutes. Sandra picked up the light bag while Emily wrestled the heavy luggage alone. Emily didn’t complain. She just rolled her eyes and followed her best friend inside. They got inside, and Sandra led the way upstairs. Emily dragged the bag up the stairs like it was a stubborn goat refusing to cooperate. When they reached the visitor’s room, which was opposite Sandra’s room, Sandra pushed the door open and stepped aside as if she were revealing a prize on a game show.Emily walked in and stopped dead. The room did not look like the visitor’s room she remembered. The old room was nice and simple. This new version looks like a presidential suite. Emily stared around with her mouth slightly open.Everything was brand new. “You did all this for me?” She asked, turning to Sandra.“Well… I told my dad to change everything for you

Two days later in the morning, Sandra arrived at Emily’s apartment driving the bright Lamborghini her father gifted her a few months ago. Emily had already explained the one-week Christmas holidays in Sandra's house to her father earlier, and after some hesitation, he agreed to let her go.Emily was inside her room, folding clothes into her small suitcase when Sandra walked in. Sandra leaned on the doorframe for a second, watching her with a soft smile.“You are still packing? I thought you would be waiting already,” she said.“I'm almost done.” Emily replied. "I wasn't expecting you to come this early."Sandra walked over and helped her pack the remaining things. In a few minutes, everything was done. Emily zipped the bag, and they made their way out.Just as they got to the sitting room, Emily’s father stormed out of his room in anger. He looked at Emily like she had done something terrible and unforgivable.“Emily,” he shouted. “I just finished talking with Desmond now. Why didn’t
