Chapter Four

“I don’t want anybody else as a surrogate mother; I want you, Emily,” Vanessa said, her eyes boring into Emily, finally letting the enormous cat out of the bag.

“What…!” Emily’s sharp, straight voice sliced through the air, making Vanessa shiver.

“I will pay you handsomely…” Vanessa said immediately, trying to patronize her more. She needed this to be convincing.

“I will double the money you requested and even help you secure a good spot for your bakery. I have friends in top real estate companies.”

Vanessa moved her chair closer to the now-silent Emily, who stared back at her in disbelief. Vanessa grabbed her hands, inching forward.

“Please, I need your help, Emily. I’m asking you as a friend,” she pleaded, her eyes now a fountain of tears.

Emily immediately shook her head, trying to shake off what Vanessa had just told her.

“You’re asking me to carry your child? Yours and Richard’s? My ex?” Her confusion slowly turned into anger, making Vanessa shudder.

“Wait, so that’s the deal you were talking about? You want me to carry your baby in exchange for your help?” Emily spat, her nostrils flaring. Her head was still spinning with confusion and anger.

“I know it’s difficult to ask, but you don’t have to put it that way,” Vanessa said softly, trying to calm her down.

She shrugged. “I’m sorry for calling it a deal. I need your help. I don’t…..”

“No!” Emily growled, cutting her off. “You don’t need my help. You can have a dozen women do this, so why me?”

“Why me, of all the women available to you? And why now?” Her eyes flamed with anger.

“Because you’re my best friend,” Vanessa answered, her shoulders shaking as another round of tears spilled. “You’re the only one who understands me, the only person I can trust with something so precious.” Using a tissue, she dabbed at her tears, now mixed with mascara.

“Oh really?” Emily smirked. “What about your husband?

How does he feel about this little arrangement?” She wanted to hear more about the man she once loved.

“He doesn’t have an issue. He already knows my situation and wants to be a father so badly that he doesn’t mind,” Vanessa said.

Emily winced at Vanessa’s words. The thought of Richard not caring about her made her heartache, but even worse was the idea of him being okay with her carrying his child. It made her sick to her stomach.

“I can’t do it, Vanessa. I’m sorry,” Emily finally responded, her tone sharp and clear, wanting to end the conversation immediately.

“You don’t have to decide now,” Vanessa said, pulling Emily’s hands toward her. “I know this is a tough decision for you, and I also know that you won’t let me suffer this way, knowing only you can help me.” She inched closer.

Emily scoffed angrily. “Are you forgetting that you cut me off?” She snatched her hands away from Vanessa’s.

“You angrily cut me off after you found out about me and Richard.” Her once furious eyes were now bright with tears as the painful memory sliced through her mind.

The memory hit like a slap: the phone call that never came, the silence that stretched for months, and the realization that Vanessa had erased her like she never existed.

“You said, and I quote, ‘It would be best if we stopped being friends. I don’t think I can be friends with someone who has been with my husband, who he clearly is still in love with.’ Do you remember?” Emily let the tears roll freely now as the pain of the memory finally hit.

It was no use trying to be strong. She had lost two people that day: the love of her life and her best friend.

Vanessa sniffed. “And I regret that every single day,” she said, looking up at Emily.

“You don’t think I do? I have missed you so much, but please, you have to understand. I was hurting. It didn’t help that my husband never wanted to marry me; he only had eyes for you. I was in pain when I said those things to you.” A fresh batch of tears now streaming down her cheeks, ashamed of her actions back then.

Emily chuckled bitterly. “Wait… Was that why you did it? You actually cut years of friendship because of your insecurities? Even after I told you I had nothing more to do with Richard?” Her heart sank.

Emily couldn’t take it anymore. Packing up her stuff and getting ready to leave, she realized this whole meeting had been a waste of her time.

Now, on her feet, she said, “I don’t think I can help you, Vanessa. It was nice seeing you after all these years.”

She glanced at her untouched cinnamon roll, which she had forgotten to pay for. “And I’m sure you can clear the bill, being a billionaire and all.” She added as she stormed out of the café.

As much as her heart ached for her friend, that was too big of a request to honor. Besides, she didn’t want anything to do with Richard, let alone consider carrying his child.

“You’re really going to turn your back on me like this? After everything?” Vanessa’s voice trembled, but her eyes were sharp.

“You owe me!” Vanessa screamed, and all heads in the café turned in their direction, making Emily stop dead in her tracks.

She smiled bitterly. She had had enough of Emily, making her out to be the villain. Enough of Miss Goody Two-Shoes.

Still fuming and humiliated, Emily turned sharply, her pulse hammering in her ears.

The café’s chatter had faded now. There was only Vanessa with running mascara down her face, her nose red and puffy from crying, storming toward her like an unhinged woman.

Emily’s fists clenched, angry but also very confused, as she stood waiting for Vanessa, who held everybody’s gaze. The entire café was watching, probably wondering why she had raised her voice so loudly.

And what the hell did she mean by you owe me?

The hair on the back of her neck stood on end, and dread washed over her as her stomach sank with unease.

Becca was right. Meeting with Vanessa had been a big mistake.

Her fingers immediately clipped to the big brown envelope slipping from her tired nails. She was not letting this slip away; it was the solution to everything.Securing the position of the envelope in her fingers, she rested her head back on the side of the bus as she tried to slip away to her dreamless sleep again. But just then, the sound of her phone pulled her back, the vibrations from her small handbag making it completely impossible to ignore.Drawing in a deep breath, she fished out her phone and, without even checking who the caller was, out of anger for being disturbed from the sleep of her dream (well, dreamless sleep)…“Hello!?” Emily growled.“Emily, are you okay?” Becca’

Chapter twenty-four“What could my husband possibly have done that you had to bring in security for him?” Vanessa asked. Her tone was sharp and demanding as her gaze turned from Doctor Bruce to Richard, then to the hefty security guards who looked ready to handle a problem. She tried to hide the irritation in her eyes. When she had texted Doctor Bruce earlier, pleading with him to stall Richard while she made her way here. After she had ignored his messages and calls, along with Emily’s, because she was busy with a certain distracting business she didn’t want to leave unattended. After mixing up the time and hearing that Emily had been bold enough to show up late, maybe she didn’t need to save her house as much as Vanessa had thought she did.A small smirk curved her lips, but she quickly fixed it back in place and turned her attention to the disgraceful scene in front of her. This was certainly not what she had pictured. She had expected Bruce to bore Richard with programs and proce

Chapter twenty-three“Mr. Williams?” The bald doctor, whose name tag read Bruce, kept calling to him.Who names their kid Bruce, anyway? But none of that mattered. The only person who mattered was standing just a few meters away from him. Richard tried his best not to put all his hope that it was her, but his stomach fluttered anyway. As he prayed to whoever cared to listen above that by some stroke of luck, the wet figure in front of him was Emily, the woman who had haunted his dreams for years. The woman he had even gone to therapy for. The woman, he hired a private investigator to follow, just to get a glimpse of her, even though it was through photos. The woman he was ready to spend his life with the one who made the thought of having children no longer feel like a rope tied around his throat.Richard inhaled deeply, willing his legs to move. He rubbed his eyes, giving common sense one last chance, not wanting to place his heart on a false alarm. But the vision remained. There

Chapter twenty-two “No, that can’t be him. That can’t be Richard!” Emily found herself screaming inside, but it only came out as a whisper as the nurse immediately pulled her into the room, shutting the door. “Miss, please, you have to calm down. Your temperature is still very high,” the nurse who had gone to get her a blanket said, trying to place a distorted Emily onto the bed. “No, you don’t understand. What if he sees me?” Emily said, although it felt as though she was screaming at the top of her voice. The sound of her heartbeat only grew louder by the second, making it difficult for her to hear herself. Her words came out as a distorted whisper to the nurse, who now had a genuinely concerned look on her face. “Please, ma’am, you have to relax. I don’t understand what you are saying,” the nurse said as she placed a big blanket over Emily, but that did nothing to stop the shiver that continued to run up and down her spine. Emily shook her head repeatedly as she grip

Chapter Twenty-one Richard’s eyes stared out at the hospital’s entrance as he raked his hand through his hair, trying his best not to grip it out of anger. Here he was, going through one issue at work and another at home. Fuck! He never even wanted any of this in the first place, he thought angrily, already feeling the pressure building between his eyes. But you agreed to it, a tiny voice whispered to him. No, he didn’t. This was all Vanessa’s fault, and he had somehow gotten wrapped up again in her webs. He needed to get this done fast and get back to figuring out how to deal with this issue with Mr. Chen, because there was no way he was losing this contract all because his manager couldn’t keep his thing in his damn pants. “Don’t go too far. This shouldn’t take long,” Richard said impatiently to Harrison, who nodded as he got out of the car and made his way toward the entrance of the hospital. He needed to get this done as fast as possible and leave this place.

Chapter 20 “If we lose this contract because of your incompetence, consider yourself fired,” Richard barked into the phone as he struggled for fine comfort on his leather seat in the back of his Range Rover, as he and his driver made their way through the city traffic on their way to the hospital address Vanessa had sent it. “I’m really sorry sir, please give me a chance to fix this.” Sam’s shaky voice slips through the phone of this speaker. “You better!” Richard said, as his grip around the phone tightened. He could hear the fear and trembling in Samuel’s voice and, as much as it was annoying that he was the reason behind that tremble, he knew it was Becca. There was no way he was going to allow the slip up of his manager to cause him this contract. “I will sir, I just need to make a few calls and talk to her, please sir.” The sly bastard was still in contact with her? “I don’t care what you do or who you call,” Richard said, deciding not to think too much into what
