Caspian's POV

I heard her come in.

She stood in the doorway of my office, coat still on, her face doing that still thingy she does when something had shaken her and she doesn't want me to see how much.

She had heard the call. Of course she had heard it.

I had known she was in the hallway the whole time, her breath held, her hand at her mouth, and I had let her hear it, because a part of me that I don't examine wanted her to.

"You're working late," I said, warm now, the other voice packed awa

Sebastian's POV I had listened to that phone call a hundred times in my head, and it got worse every time.“He believes every word. He has no idea. Why would he? He thinks the world turns for him.”I sat alone in my study with the door shut and the house dark around me, and I turned it over and over, looking for the innocent version, the reading where it meant nothing. But there wasn't one. I had built my whole career on knowing when someone was lying. I just hadn't wanted to point that gift at the woman I had burned my marriage down for.I got out the calendar and did the thing I had been avoiding for weeks.I counted. The night Nicole first told me she was pregnant. The night she first pressed my hand to her stomach and smiled. I lined it up against the due date, the real one, the one before it started moving, and I counted backward the way any man can count, and the number didn't work.It didn't work at all.Sitting there in the dark with the pen in my hand, I felt something col

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 30: The Woman Who Knows Too Much

Ana's POV "Evelyn," Caspian said. "I hope you're not boring her.""Never." Evelyn's smile didn't move, but something behind it went still. "We were just getting acquainted. She's charming, Caspian. You could stand to introduce her around more.""I'll keep that in mind." He turned to me. "There's someone who wants to meet you, but give me a moment with Evelyn first."It wasn't a request. I had learned to hear the difference."Of course," I nodded. He guided Evelyn a few steps away, towards the edge of the room, his hand light on her elbow, and I stared at them go, and I saw the thing that happened when they thought no one was looking. The pleasant faces dropped.I couldn't hear the words. The room was too loud, the music, the hundred careful conversations. But I didn't need the words.I saw the way Caspian's jaw set. I saw Evelyn lift her chin and say something short and sharp back at him, unafraid, one of the only people in that entire gold room who would meet his eyes and not flinch

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 29: The Gala

Ana's POV Three days later, I was standing in the middle of Caspian's bedroom, staring at the dress someone had delivered that morning, wondering when exactly my life had stopped feeling like my own.It was midnight blue, and it cost more than I used to make in a month, and it fit like it had been sewn on me, because of course it had, because a man who taped torn money back together doesn't guess at a size. I put it on. I looked at the stranger in the mirror. And I let him take me to the gala, because I had said yes in the lamplight at three in the morning, and because some tired part of me wanted, just once, to stop hiding.°°°°°°°°°°The room was gold and big and full of the most powerful people I had ever been near.I felt it the moment we walked in. Not the wealth, though the wealth was everywhere, dripping off wrists and hanging from ears. Something else. The way the whole room turned, like flowers to a light, the second Caspian stepped through the door with his hand at the s

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 28: The Boy Who Never Slept

Caspian's POV I heard her bare feet in the hallway before I saw her.I didn't turn around. I sat at the desk in my home office with one lamp on, and I waited, because there was nowhere for either of us to go at three in the morning except towards the thing we had been avoiding all night."You weren't in bed," she said from the doorway."No.""It's three in the morning, Caspian.""I'm aware of the time." I set my pen down. "I usually am."She stepped into the room. "What do you mean, you usually are?""I mean I don't sleep much." I leaned back. "Three, maybe four hours. On a good night. There aren't many good nights."She came closer. "Since when?""Since I was a boy." I heard the words leave me and couldn't quite believe I was saying them out loud. "You learn to work while the rest of the world sleeps. It's quiet. No one wants anything from you. It's the only time the noise stops.""That's not normal," she said softly. "Four hours. For years.""Normal was never on the table for me, A

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 27: The Wrong Answer

Ana's POV "Are you pulling away from me, Anastasia?""No." The word came quickly, and I heard how it sounded. "I'm setting boundaries. At work. That's all this is.""Boundaries." He said the word like he was tasting something bitter. "That's a clean word for it.""It's the true word for it. There's a difference between work and this, between the office and here, and I'm trying to keep them separate so I can survive the office. That's not the same as pulling away from you.""Isn't it?" He slowly came around the counter, that unhurried way he had that made my heart speed up whether I wanted it to or not. "I have seen people set boundaries my whole life. Do you know what a boundary is, really? It's a fence you build one panel at a time so that when you finally walk away, you can tell yourself the fence was always there. That you never really let them in at all.""That's not what I'm doing.""Then why does it feel exactly like that.""Because you can't tell the difference," I said, sharp

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 26: Too Close, Too Far

Ana's POV The last thing I saw before the dark took me was Caspian. His chair shoved back so hard it hit the wall. His whole stillness was gone in a second. He crossed that floor towards me faster than I have ever seen him move, his mouth shaping my name, and then the darkness swallowed everything and I was gone.°°°°°°°°°°I woke up to a white ceiling and a soft beeping. The company clinic. I knew it by the smell, clean and cold, and by the pain in my arm where a needle was taped to the back of my hand. I was on a narrow bed with a blanket over me, and for a moment I couldn't remember how I had gotten here, and then it came back, the room tilting, the voice from the bottom of the well, the floor rushing up."You're awake."A doctor stood at the foot of the bed, a woman with kind tired eyes and a chart in her hands. "You gave everyone quite a scare, Miss Voss. How do you feel?""Embarrassed," I said, and my voice came out cracked. "I'm fine. It was nothing. I stood up too fast.""Yo

Ana's POV The late nights had somehow become a rhythm I no longer questioned.Dinner that pretended to be work. The car that pretended to be convenience. Ana's POV I had been at my desk twenty minutes when HR walked in and shut the door behind her."Settling in?" she asked, but her eyes were doing something her smile wasn't."It's going as planned." • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   CHAPTER 1: The Good News

Ana's POV I had three weeks, one red dress, and one last plan to save my marriage.
